Does anyone know if VW ever fitted a tacho in MK1 Diesels?

Am tired of looking at the big clock in the GLD as compared to the tacho in the GLS.

In the US some Caddys had a tacho. I put in a bid on ebay US for one a while ago but missed out. My memory on the sender is vague, but I think it was connected to the W terminal on later alternators. You can go to the "Cheap Triclks" website and have a look at what's there. http://www.4crawler.com/Diesel/CheapTricks/Tachometer/index.shtml

Caddys had a different guage shape.

Hi,

You can get a small tacho from VDO that fits into one of the two places in the centre console. It's driven by signals from the alternator. My old Mk1 turbo diesel had a tacho in the main instrument cluster, it also was driven from the alternator - made it easy to tell when the alternator drive belt was slipping!

I've seen these on ebay US. But you will still need the alternator with the W terminal. I assume that these were fitted to Golf autos (?)

There are aftermarkets that will work with any alternator.
