Hey mate, what did you use for the replacement on that oil catch on the breather pipe from the crankcase vapour? I can see something yellow though :)
mk3pete
28-07-2009, 10:33 AM
the exhaust is in i just havent got a photo will post up soon though
its just a catch can from super cheap
connected with a fire hose lol
i couldnt find anything else at home, i do need to fix this hehe
mk3pete
08-08-2009, 03:26 PM
i did some modifying to my catchcan after reading on from this link
http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1940008
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2009/08/0012-1.jpg
heres my abomination i slapped together at home from lots of different things
i bought the can from supercheap
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2009/08/0031-1.jpg
gunk left inside after emptying it
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2009/08/0041-1.jpg
nice and clean
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2009/08/006-1.jpg
here is the top, it already had 3/8 bspt (tapered thread)threads
although i had to tap it out more with a 3/8 bsp (parallel thread)tap so i could screw a double ended fitting through it
purpose of this was so i didnt have to weld anything
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2009/08/008-1.jpg
this is the top finished, i joined the hose to the top i screwed in using standard pneumatic fittings
thus extending the inlet to the bottom of the can
for the breather i used an exhaust silencer commonly found on pneumatic machinery
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2009/08/007-1.jpg
the can with the stainless steel wool inside acting as a filter
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2009/08/011-1.jpg
finished
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2009/08/012-1.jpg
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2009/08/013-1.jpg
in the car hiding next to the intake
i used 3/4 inch steam hose its the only stuff i could find that fitted the hose barb on the car

Forgive me for the n00bity of this question, but which oil catch did you replace?
mk3pete
08-08-2009, 03:47 PM
i didnt replace it i modified it the first pic you see is the one i put in about a year ago when my pcv valve broke i didnt post anything about it back then
peedman
08-08-2009, 04:20 PM
nice work but im not sure u would really want to put steel wool in there. i know it might be a long shot but you wouldnt want any fibres to be sucked into the motor if u know what i mean. its also gonna lower the capacity to store oil so u have to change it more often. just a thought.
mk3pete
08-08-2009, 04:53 PM
i cant say that it would ever enter the engine it wouldn't be possible
the reason iv done it so it lowers the fumes,
before it didn't smell too good
i hardly ever emptied it anyway i think it took 3 months and it only filled about a quarter:)
rayray086
08-08-2009, 06:16 PM
I like that idea of extending the screw thread so you can put on a hose fitting on the inside. As for the steel wool, I hear a lot of people do that to act as an oil/air separator, i.e. trapping as much oil vapour as possible. Didn't think about stray metal being sucked up though - there is a chance seeing as the airflow is moving from the catch can towards the intake. Maybe a small baffle (like the ones you see in the more expensive oil funnels you can buy) could be used to fit over the hose that leads to the intake?
mk3pete
08-08-2009, 06:33 PM
i cant see how the air flows from the catch can to the intake isnt it opposite
i mean the waste comes from the rocker cover into the catch can
rayray086
08-08-2009, 10:09 PM
Yeah that's correct, but what comes in must come out too right? It might be a very slim chance that any piece of metal would get sucked up since the output hose travels from the catch can back to the intake.
Another way to think about it is that the pressure from the crankcase/rocker cover is usually higher than inside the intake tube. We know that anything from a high pressure/density will want to move to a place of lower density, and that's where we get the air/oil flow from the engine to the intake (with the catch can in between).
Wait, is your output from the catch can routed back to the intake or just filtered out into the atmosphere?
mk3pete
08-08-2009, 10:14 PM
its just filtered to the atmosphere hence the reason why i put the ss wool in plus the exhaust silencer filter :)

dont get the shorter final drive if you plan on going fi?! you'll want the long gears . . .
mk3pete
30-08-2009, 10:38 AM
why for alex..?
depends on how much power youre going to make really. Stock vr6 gearing is too tall for the standard power output and the car takes ages to wind up. Big HP cars can overcome the tall gearing whereas with shorter gearing it will be a wheelspin fest.
But yeah.. How much power are you chasing

Just a thought, but it might be an idea to put some heatshrink on the metal spades too?
KI11Z
01-09-2009, 10:04 PM
So did you use a resistor like some people suggested overseas? From all the research I did there didn't seem to be a definitive answer as to whether or not use one...
mk3pete
01-09-2009, 11:21 PM
thanks for the replies guys its really not too complicated when you think about it
i just went to extra lengths to make sure nothing goes wrong
from what i have gathered the only reason you need a resister is to protect the coils from earthing to the car
the coils on a normal car switches on via the positive terminals
on vws they switch via the negative
if they are earthed to the car that means they are constantly on
so they will just overheat and blow up
i didnt end up using one because my icm was good
for those who would like to know if you decide to use one you need a 1ohms resister rated at 225 watts
the reason why people have trouble with blown coils is they have a bad icm
(ignition control module)
basically whether or not earth is leaking through to the contact points on the icm (each coil 16 34 25)
the only way to tell if your icm is good is to use a multi meter that can read in solid state
my mates an electrician so he tested it for me
heres my finished job

.72 5th Gear for 02A/02J Transmissions
http://www.autotech.com/images/products/gear_72fifth.jpg
For the 02A/02J gearboxes found in G60, Mk3 VR6 and all Mk4 models, we offer a tall 0.72 ratio gear pair. Again, these are Factory gears, assuring high quality. The stock fifth gear ratio in a VR6 or G60 is usually 0.84, so this taller pair drops a healthy 14% off your rpm for the same speed. Comes with two new Factory gears

Now thats a peice of gear I'd be real keen on seeing how it works out for you. I've always thought the vr6 revved too high at fwy speeds.

Sorry for the no0bity of this question, but I have to ask cos otherwise I don't learn!
If the gear ratio (0.84, 0.72) is LOWER, it will go to higher speeds at the same rpm? Ie, 0.84 gear at 100km/h is 2,800, but 0.72 is like 2,500?

well yes it would but i cant see how id ever use that for higher speeds
im doing it to counter act my 3.94 ring and pinion set so it doesnt rev so high in fifth:smile:

Looks like one of the middle exhaust braces. I wouldnt worry about that too much since its the rubbers that hold the exhaust up, they are only there if ur rubbers fail and the exhaust droops too much.

(iv posted this in this thread http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newforum/upload/showthread.php?t=34315 but duo to topic change il just continue here)
now im just thinking out loud here bare with me
"i wouldnt get the short runner inless you get big cams like 288s and a 3.94 r&p to make up for the bottom end loss"
after reading that i got excited:rolleyes:
now me being noob about all this performance stuff
some one correct me if my logic seems stupid or wrong
due to having installed my 3.94 r&p this gives me bottom end power (acceleration off the line)
now if i do get this short runner this gives me top end power does it not?
for me to achieve mid range power im thinking of getting a cam
now what sort of cam is a good question?
one might ask someone who hopefully knows what there talking about
a lot of people on vortex have tried these cams drc268s http://www.drcamshafts.com/
and apparently are just as good as the schrick 268s

pete, correct me if i am wrong but cams with longer duration be it with a short mani or not need high rpm to give full potential of what these cams have to offer 5000+rpm, now considering you have a 3.94 r&p means you dont have the stock tall gearing to make total use of these cams like 288's.
therefore using a 3.94 r&p with high duration cams would mean you would be shifting at the beginning or midway through powerband and obtainable potential of 288's would not do as much as a 264 cam with your r&p.
just food for thought.
jayjay
16-09-2009, 10:50 PM
high duration cams dont necessarily correlate with high top end power. nor does having a higher final driver equate to having better acceleration.
with your tdi 5th you'll be able to cruise at sane RPMs but the difference between 4th and 5th will be maaasssivve.
if you plan on going FI or big power, you should keep old ring and pinion because you'll want the taller gears to wind out. (as tim said!)
to make total use of the 288s.... you'll need a lot more than better gear ratios..

sorry mate i might of been a bit confusing there, i got a bit of ahead of myself when i said that:rolleyes:
i was thinking 262 autotech cams but iv realized there a bit low for what i would need
like you said i would probably need something like that 264, or DRC 268s which are pretty much schrick 268 copies but only half the cost:banana:

iv decided against fi for now its not worth putting the extra stress on a tired 200 thousand k motor
how does my shorter final drive not equate to better acceleration?
jayjay
16-09-2009, 11:15 PM
i just think it effectively means more shifting in the process of accelerating... i find that i'm no human-dsg and 020s and 02as don't have the quickest rifle bolt action shift either.
Doesn't a final drive effectively equate to a closer ratio gearbox? ( i'm not trying to question your choice or anything, i'm just getting my head around :) )

now having a higher duration like a 288 cam makes peak power at much higher rpm than say a 264.pretty much you will have minimal torque before the engine rpm is high enough to maximise lift.this is why 288 are for race and 264 are for street applications. i hear this in numerous NA builds and it sounds pretty much common sense.
as for gearing 3,94 does create better acceleration compared to stock gearing besides head work done however you are sacificing top speed in that gear for acceleration another reason "i think were are pretty much saying the same thing"
as for 288 application major head would need to be done to increase cfm (air flow) to see get the best out of these cams.
mk3pete
16-09-2009, 11:25 PM
(quoted by preen59):google:
Ring and pinion affects the final drive, so all gears are affected. The ratio between them remains the same.
In this case, "shortened". So the maximum speed in every gear is reduced, but acceleration is improved by the increased ratio. Think of it as using a lower gear on the crank (front sprocket) of your pushbike..

16-09-2009, 11:27 PM
pete have you tested each gear for top speed (legally), interested in knowing how much speed is lost?
also i highly advise you to reconditon your cylinder head before you install cams saves time and money.
i know headworld can do a service and match port for around $1000.

il be getting this work done all at the same time
lets see here
recoed box- 3.94 r&p, taller fifth gear, peloquin diff
timing chains
sachs clutch
mk4 head gasket
cams once iv decided what to get
chip to suit cams
maybe the schimmel intake not sure on that one yet
fuel pump
r32 sump with pick up (my sump has had it may as well upgrade)
thats it i think:banana:
thats a good idea but all depends on condition of the head plus the budget
also id prefer to keep the work to the one shop, volkwerke are pretty good so il see how i go

great list.
but i dont know why are you choosing an r32 sump when the 12v is steel rather aluminium (weak), plus you will have to increase your oil fill-ups by half a litre which i find irritating when you cant find 5.5L + Bottles. and you will have modify the sump to fit from what i remember there is an extra bolt up on the Bell-housing side
mk3pete
17-09-2009, 07:27 AM
mk5 sumps give an extra half inch clearance plus they have baffles
sits above subframe
not sure about the extra bolt, i know i have to drill a hole in the baffle to allow the dip stick in

a mass airflow meter works by heating up a thin metallic wire to quite a high temperature. The difference in voltage potential across the wire is measured as a rate of change as the air flowing through the inlet is used to determine what mass of air is passing through the cross sectional area.
basically. wire gets hot. air going in cools it down. as the hot wire gets colder, the voltage of the sensor changes --> change in mass of air.
The grid and shape are really all quite important for the maf to work within factory parameters

Hi Pete, just passing by and wondered how you'd you go with this MOD? I really want to do it myself, is there perhaps any pointers or measurements you can swing my way? Thanks. :)

its 3'' stainless tube and the smaller tube didn't quite fit tight enough so i used a larger o ring on the sensor
for measurements iv forgotten what everything was exactly
you just have to take the sensor out and see what size tubing would fit, and then make sure its the right length so its in the middle of the 3'' tube:)

what a bitch of a job to install the phenolic spacer.... everything went wrong:mad:
all 3 bolt holes stripped thats holds the belt tensioner on (first pic)
lucky i had some spare exhaust studs M8 that were longer than the oem bolts:lollipop:
found one of my leads was broked had to jb weld it back on:mad:
all this the day before DOVW.......
i done a lot of wire neatening at the same time.
i used self amalgamating tape, great stuff really easy to use and comes up a treat.
i used two rolls of the stuff, got it from autobarn 16 bucks each but worth it.
