so how much would you charge for one of these custom mounts you made?

DOHCDAVE
04-10-2005, 08:53 PM
probably to much as i would have to pull the mount off my motor to get the correct line and at the moment car is still siting in the garage 6mnths now and can't get it runnning for some minor prob can't find and no one up here wants to help out.
What i can suggest is that if you can weld or know someone that can i can give you the method i used.
1st i cut the mount i was going to use down at right angles retaining the one of the mount pieces and cutting away the other as of yet i had not made any measurements. So what i'm left with is a u shapped piece with a little over hang of the other u shapped bit if you look at the pics u will notice what i mean. Then you will need to mount the larger half of the bracket onto the block, the alt onto the other piece then you will need to line the pullies so that their as in line as possible at the same time as butting the two cut pieces together. You might need someone to mark the position for you as it might be easier. Then tac the pieces together so their strong enough to support the alt then if you happy with the pos finish the welds making sure not to put to much heat on one side as it will pull out of shape. The little over hang i mentioned left over from the other u shapped bit i left on there is so i had enough to put a strong weld on.

If you havn't a clue what i'm going on about i could mark the bracket i've got here with a few instructions shouldn't be to hard to follow through on as it took me about 2-3 hours with a few smoke breaks.
oh also you will need a bit of flat bar to secure the mount onto the front of the motor.
I'll go down stairs and see what i can put together, may have a spare bit of flat bar already cut with holes in it.
You will need an allen key bolt that has only half of it's head may have a spare also.
for my trouble think i'd want about $60 + p/h
i'll just have to see what bits i can send as in bolts, bracket, flat bar though i think i can find most bits to make another bracket.
Man sorry for the long story, but if i was to tell you the trouble i went to just to get to the stage of saying f*#$ it i'll make my own you'd be reading a novle.
Cheers Dave
let us know what you want us to do sorry i can't make another but i tell you it feels good to fabricate something yourself and have it work :!:
Also the fact that i can help out people like you save a few hundred on the price of one.

Again Cheers Dave

here's what i would be sending if your interested note a few lines marked that's were i'm talking about cutting.
the short head allen key bolt is to clear the timing belt after mounting, the flat bar you will notice is in the pic above that you can see the alt fan in view.http://xs49.xs.to/pics/05403/bract9.jpg.xs.jpg (http://xs.to/xs.php?h=xs49&d=05403&f=bract9.jpg)

Dave's car is a real credit to his skills.
Went for a drive in his 16v & it is a real little screamer.
He has it running like a dream & is the best running 16v i have seen for a while.
All he needs is to install a 5 speed GTI box to get rid of his wheel spin & torque steer.

Dave, How much of the airbox did you have to chop up to get it under the bonnet. It looks like i have to chop most of the box away (probably just enough to carry th air filter) it look like there is no other real option.

Or use an early type airbox.

The whole bottom is cut out except for a little flat section that's closest to the driver and yes you can use an early type bottom box wich i think mine is, the hole cut out gives it a good note when on the throttle and better air flow or should i say no restriction on the flow, leave a stip of plastic across the bottom so it maintains a bit of strength an so you can secure it in place.

What mods has your car got?

DOHCDAVE
29-04-2006, 07:31 AM
quick list would be king springs, koni adj ride, mk2 dash, the mags you can see B R green is the colour, cabrio grill ,mk2 bumber and all the bits like diesel fuel lines, tank for the k-jet setup, obvious 16v in the photo, engine oil cooler mounted as the last motor being an ev gti, and as i'am a Loon as well, engine oil temps ran a little hot, thus the cooler this time.
bottom control arm brace as u would all know crackswill appear in the body and this will help with that as well as turn in stiffness into corners.
oh mk2 gti stoppers that were new out of the box, diesel rear drums. actually i think i've just covered most of the car.So not many compared with some and it's a dream to drive.

Lots of fun behind the wheel to be had for you guys thinking of converting.

But just as much fun with the 8v gti that was in it, with only 11 hp difference the pull up high in the revs are apparent compared with the 8v wich was as strong down low if not a little stronger......bla bla bla

Nice pics.

They show the Mk2 style brake fluid bottle. That makes it easier.
If using the early style booster, it fouls and still would even with the abf cap. Thats where the washeres and kicking the booster over helps.

I thought of making the bars longer and moving the booster further to the right, but if I was gonna go to all that trouble, might as well rig up something better.

Rolling beam, is used in citi golfs and old saabs! Hydraulics would be better though.

There are a few pics earlier i think pg2-4 motor looked cleaner then as it has been the daily driver since i got it going.
Here's one from the other day not sure if you can see it that well i'll get some more photo's on mothers day, taking it to a classics show. Most of you know but anyhow, you can click on the photo's for a larger pic.
