GL to VR6

Hey guys im taking some ppl on here have put a vr6 engine into a gl. just wondering how much work is actually involved.

im aware the engine, hubs, brakes, dash cluster are involved in changing over. just wondering what other parts, if the gearbox has to be swapped, radiator, and any other parts. thanks

well if you can pick up an engine for a reasonable price then go for it.
this place is for the enthuthiast and vw lover so do what you must.
i had the choice of supercharging a 16v mk2 or just plain 8v. i chose 8v because 1. it was my engine and 2. i dont need the 16v, every tuner has one
also if that car in ur DP and sig is yours then hell yeah. for once there will be a nice looking vr6 in oz.
i gives u thumbs up and i will offer you all the help i can give.
tho im not sure bout vr6 as much as i am about the 4cyl engines.

No offence of course, but it is a fecking MASSIVE job to drop a VR6 engine. I don't actually know this because I haven't done it but golf loon has and he'll chime in eventually and tell you exactly what needs to be done.

It is going to be a fair bit of money if you want to do it to your own car; you'll have payed more than double what the car's worth just to do everything you've done to it do this date! If you're still keen then by all means go for it and have some fun:) but I'd suggest talking to people who have done it before for little bits that might be overlooked.

At the end of the day it isn't impossible, and it isn't completely unreasonable in your case (because of your car mods) but it is pretty hefty in price and labour.

id say for a whole engine vr6 incl gearbox ecu etc etc pay no more than 1300
then with the rest, got no clue what you need but shouldnt be too much more. time to put it in would be alot more......ALOT MORE!!!!
but in my case, i would buy a vr6 in white, (so no more painting panels and then change all your stuff to the vr6 and the old vr6 stuff to your old golf and your set.
6.5k for vr6 and then change all parts from your car to vr6 and vice versa then sell your GL for say 3k and all up it cost you 3.5k for a vr6 which you dont need to get passed with diff engine codes etc.
but so many options, its all your choice.

Best bet is to find a donor car (ie complete with motor, sus, subframe, box etc) and do a swap over. You could find a cheap ish wrecked VR6 (written off due to crash or other damage) for a decent price if you keep a look out, but may have to wait for a while. At least that way you have everything plus spares. If your going to do it once, at least do it properly and dont skimp on parts ;)

I thought about doing the same thing with my GL, and after spending over $4k on stereo, rims and exhaust it got written off. I was kind of glad, as that way I was given my agreed value on the GL, so I could get a VR6 shipped over from NSW.

You will need to swap for the VR6 running gear, so you can kiss your rims goodbye (due to the 5 lug), plus the suspension in a VR6 is harder due to the extra weight on the front of the car. You'll also need a VR6 gearbox.

Even though you would lose money selling your car, I think you would lose less by selling it and buying a VR6 rather than doing a swap... just my 2c.

Joe up at Golfwagen does have a VR6 engine sitting around however :)

Its pretty hard to swop all the stuff over. Easier to sell yours and buy another.

Or buy the VR first, swop your bodykit etc and sell yours as a stock GL.

its sort of a project for me to swap everything over as i am an apprentice mechanic and it will be an experience for me. alrdy have vr springs in mine but will prob get coilovers to solve suspension, brakes is easy and the engine is gna b the oly relli hard part.

You cant do just brakes, you need the subframe, driveshafts, gearbox, shifter, pedal box, bigger master cylinder, wiring loom, cluster and more.

You need a complete donor car and lots of time.
I`d only attempt it if it was the worlds nicest 2 door.

I`m not doubting you can do it, its just whether its worth it.

its far to much stuffing around for not much gains...

Yep I agree too, easier, probably less expensive in the long run (think of maintenance of VR6's at their age lol) and that sound...:D

plus you could tune and tweak the hell out of it once it's in for even more power!

turbo parts for a 2.0l non cross flow head? if anyone wants to hook me up with some parts ill build it =] atm got 2g to spend thanks to the government haha. for starters prob do the head, thick head gasket leave the pistons for now and work on top end esp. and also ecu will cost quite abit to get done for a turbo.

On the topic of 8v turbo's, is there any motor as such in oz? I haven't heard of any.

I have an ABA 2L crossflow motor squirrelled away.
You could run it with your current ecu and the crossflow motor is easily tuneable with stuff from the states. Plug and play in your car and you can keep your gearbox.

with the aba motor everything goes on as per the aus motor like the throttle body, alt, ac, ps, radiator, hoses. ect

Put a 1.8t and be done with it . You'll be dissapointed with the handling of a VR6 coming from a 2l . If you dont want to spend money , do a little headwork , cam and install a megasquirt and play around with the tuning , maybe even install a water/meth system
