Ok well, I'm 17 and want a frakin car already.

Looking for a '97/98 VW Golf GL, stock, in good condition, maunal, <140000km, in NSW... planning on some stuff for it too, so budgets $6500/
Something similiar to this (http://www.carpoint.com.au/used-car/VOLKSWAGEN/GOLF/New%20South%20Wales/csn6979983.aspx?postcode=2155&distance=50). Actually it probally would be that if someone hadn't got their grubby hands on it before me.:duh:

Anyway, I can only wait to snap something like that up, you guys can't really help (unless you know of one:))

Well all thats beside the point, I do actually need your help. Much to my lack of google skillz, I need to know some basic cost associated with these vechiles, such as:
- General servicing
- Gearboxes
- etc

..oh and the replacement of problem items, which I can gather may be the electric windows on certain models???

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hey man, welcome to the forums. A lot of us are close to your age, you'd be surprised!

Anyways...the search function is your friend. Lots of people here ask the same questions all the time, so it's been covered in this section more times than you could be bothered poking a stick at :nana:

if you search the mk3 section for 'what to look for' then i think lots of info will come up. If not, someone will correct me and tell you what to search for :)

Good luck with your dub hunting!

Consider this car.

http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newforum/upload/showthread.php?t=29243

It's a Seat Cordoba, it's basically a MK3 mechanically, it's got the right mileage and the right price for what you're after.

They drive nicely and are just as reliable as the MK3s without the pricetag.

Pete

I've seen a fair few with no lips lol. I reckon they just fall off or get scraped off and the owner either doesn't realise or doesn't care.

Thats a nice car but cars being bought before u get the chance is part of the game man. It's irritating as hell but dont let it get to you.

Heres a story, i went to look at a Pulsar SSS before I found my vr6. I wanted it badly. I'd driven a few already and really liked the look of this one. Turns out there was a guy in his living room signing the papers right then and there! Bitterly dissapointed BUT it meant I found my vr6 and have been happy as a lamb who has avoided the slaughterhouse

Moral of the story is thus: One door closes, another opens :)

peedman- Generally should I be looking for one with 97/98, <150 clicks, working electrical everything (REVS CHECKED) and good, non worn out interior? Then just the general check over.

Definately check the a/c, if its not cold its never just the gas. Ive had to replace 2x a/c in 2 mk3s now and they arent cheap! Check the heater is working too. Look for rust in all the door jams and seals. Check floor carpets and boot too. Test power windows as well (common problem). See if headliner intact, no signs of sagging. Service record like timing belt, water pump, clutch etc. And then listen out for any knocks or noises and it steers and handles ok. Good luck with it! I think 6k and under would be a reasonable price, u could prob even get less for a private sale if u looked hard enough. Oh and tell them that the front lip is missing to haggle some more!

looks hideous without the front lip. first step when you get it is to buy a euro lip...

REVS check is just to see that it isn't still under finance, written off or stolen... it's got nothing to do with the electrics... It is definitely something you should do when buying a used car though. I just wanted to point that out...

If it has electric windows, make sure thy work. Also, make sure the heater and aircon work well. If there is any kind of feel that they are not super warm or super cold then be warned. aircon is expensive to replace.

And a guy reckoned there not much difference power/acceleration wise between the GL a CL? GL would have to be a bit faster with 25% more engine cc then the CL?

Acouple of other Q's to get your teeth into now that I can think off some.

VR6's have a cool window down/up function with the drivers key entry, does this trickle down to the GL's?

What excately is the problem with the windows and how much will it cost to fix for good/repair?

The Aircon is cold and warm, but didn't have much guts. Dad reckoned a regas would fix this, would he be right in the case with the aircon 'problem' with golfs?

Mind's Eye
06-06-2009, 08:59 PM
1) Its not 25%. Its 1.8l plays 2.0l, so about 10%
2) Yes it does for GLs, don't know about CLs, but i'll hazard a guess they'd have it too
3) The window regulators are prone to breaking. IIRC there's a disc made out of a polymer that wears out. Mk4s are made out of aluminium/some other metal? But aren't interchangable. Golf Loon can do you one installed for $150
4) Possibly. The condenser in my GL is broken, and to buy a new genuine VW one is in something of the order of $2,000. Initially thought the gas had run out. It can go hot but won't blow cold air. Don't know if its a common problem though, definitely worth checking out first.

I'm learning stuff :)

Also, I noted in the green one the battery doesn't have a little fabric pouch thing they're meant to have. Don't know how vital it is to have one, someone else might be able to help you out there

Well for perspective my old 98 GL with 149k went for 7500 early this year and that was really mint car, I honestly didn't have much interest in the car either, just the one person that was really keen.

So around 7k should be the absolute ceiling for a non VR6 mk3, unless you find a diesel or some freakishly nice condition CL/GL

Like i said, its never just the gas with these cars. A rebuilt a/c installed, flushed and gassed will cost u $900. And there is a bit of a difference in power between a cl and gl. If it were me, i would get a gl as they are easy to cruise around in. The 1.8's do really well on fuel tho, i would get 600+ out of a tank in my last car.

4) The condensor is the heat exchanger located on the front of the car . Im pretty sure VW charger approx $1000 for a new one , aftermarket you can buy them for around $300-400 and Courtney is selling hers cause she is removing the A/C out of her Golf . The only genuine part that would cost 2k would be the a/c compressor

I paid even less than that for mine and it came with a complete service history, OEM roof-racks and 71k on the clock. Cars go for what they're worth, and only now can I say that its worth close to going rate for a nice VR6

On a Mk3, if the AC doesnt work, its usually the compressor. I sell S/H ones for $150, plus $50 fitting and $100 vacuum of the system and regass.

You could pay much more elsewhere, but thats usually what it is. Like Pedro says its never just a regas. The system should be charged forever unless there is a problem.

I can mail order you a compressor, but you need to fit it then get someone to vac and regass your system.

Edit, just noticed you have a VR6 which is a different compressor.
Not worth putting a second hand one on your car as it is lots of labour to do the job.
I can supply a recod VR6 one for $400.

Heading out to check out some car yards along parramatta road on staurday, depending on weather and whether I work on my major project.

Is that huge car yard out in minchinbury any good?

Hey Dubdubdubdot..

How did you go with your search?

I had been on the look out for months and months too..
Ended up getting a 97 model GL today with 207,000kms for $3900 . Everything works beautifully.. except the clutch is slipping. Has a fair few scratches and roof line is sagging too.. Other than that i thought it was reasonable.

I couldn't find a good VR6, so I spent a little less and got a mk2 GTI, then had heaps left over to spend on it straight away.

Really happy with it so far, so you should consider a mk2 in case one comes up for sale nearby.

Any photo shop freakideaks here. If sooo:
Can you do above wheel, with a black centre all the way up past all the bolts/ex heads, but leave the rim strip/lip silver (where it goes into like a dish). Then do the multiple hex/bolt heads in gold (ie annocolour gold). If you can I shall bake you internet love cakes.

Still need's more though
Trim:

-it's all in good condition!
Will get better photos soon, after front lip is done & on.

Problems:
- No front lip (golf loon)
- Air/con is temperamental (cold only works sometimes). This may be related to the foam which has been coming out while the air/con was on hi. (golf loon?)

Oh and who's up for a quiz? Will explain more tomorrow!

Stock 'duckbill', coilovers, custom bbs rims, sound system, extractors, exhaust. Maybe a brakes upgrade. Roof racks for bicycles

...oh and a rad golfball gear knob

Apart from the foremost mentioned, everything will be done NEXT year at the minimum.

Drive wise, Dad and uncle recons its fugening fantastic. I have driven it once, it is the first time I've driven a manual, therefore not licensed to comment. Auto I can drive, manual, well....I gotta work at it.

Cheers for the compliments.

Bottom of door, drivers side, there is one similiar to this one the other door as well as the passengers side.

IN OTHER NEWS:
-More blackening on the handles, alot less streaky, very black.
-A/C with flying foam stuck behind on of the vents. Bad picture. Theres some on the right and left, the left peices are grey and hard to see.

Haha, very nice man.

I'm gonna go right ahead and promote my favourite product, KIWI SHOE POLISH.

Get it from woolies at like $4 per bottle, and it comes with the little foam pad on top to apply it with. Put it on your black textured bumpers. They come out like this: :)

Haha, that stuff gets so annoying. If Im driving my mums one and turn the AC on full ball, bits of black foam come shooting out of the vents all over me and whoever is in the passenger seat.

Tweezers are the best option to get out the bits stuck against the grilles, the foam melts and sticks to the plastic very easily as I found out when trying to drag it out with my fingers one day...

Shameless maybe, but still oh so nice ;)

Advice had been taken from previous thread. Kiwi polish is being used (kids scruff version).
1/ How did you get yours SO black
2/ Best method for applying streak free on larger areas!

Porn, which shall involve no shame. Thank you.

Hahah.

1. Believe it or not, I just applied kiwi shoe polish after a wash. I used to do it about once every month but it hardly wears off. After about...probably over 8 months of not properly applying it, I'm going to need to do it again soon because it's fading. I think $2 every 6 months is a good investment for black bumpers :D

2. What exactly do you mean? If it streaks, then that means the plastic isn't picking it up very nicely. I'd suggest going over it softly with a wet-dry 400 piece of sandpaper, cleaning it with wax and grease remover and trying again. I'll be doing this to all my bumpers soon too.

Streaking as in, not applying evenly and meaning you got to spend time 'blending' it in so everything is even.

Are the handles a different material to the lips/sideskirts/uncoloured body parts, they're really plasticy, or is the wear on the handles which makes them feel different.

Mrk_Mickey

Handles and spoiler can't be shoe polish-ed, because they're not as porous as the bumper trim and won't hold the shoe polish.

Yo all, after 4 weeks of the completion of two major projects tatking up all my time, and only driving my car 3 times during those weeks, I sat, and had a play with my car today.
I noticed that the boot light wasn't connected, so I connected it...hehehe

Also the steerer fluid container was loose so I fastened it down.

I also noticed the two front seats seemed a bit loose, assuming its just in need of tightening, is there a DIY for this? :google:

More questions... :stupid:

Any recommended mechainics who will re-gas, oil change and do a general servive.... I want only the best.
ANd how much should I bugdet for?approx.

Anyway, thanks for the help...

The only service I didn't do myself was performed by the bloke I bought my car off....Steve Natoli, who's down around Five Dock. He charged me like $120 for oil, filters and general look-over, which seems to sound far cheaper than most of the newer dubbers pay for a service haha. Might be worth checking him out because I know he's a guru?

Anyone can re-gas the aircon...golf loon always asks people if they want it done, I had my previous car done by someone who came to me for about $100, meh.

Any DIY's on front seats?

Lorenz
11-09-2009, 08:03 PM
Front seats might be lose due to the plastic sliders that sit on the edge of the seat rails connected to the floor pan coming off. Take a look and see if they are there. Prone to coming off and causing the seat to be lose/rattle. There's no real way of tightning of loseing them.... Otherwise the rail/base of the seat is cracked and lose, which my drivers side is and needs rewelding :(

kkccuuufff!

I'm in dookie, my cars in Shepparton, I'm 800km from home, my alternater belt snapped, and my A/C clutch is seized. *awesome*

Hopefully the Mechainics can find a short belt to bypass the A/c (is this possible?) and only run the altnater and water pump.

Due to this I missed out on my race (mtbing - the reason I'm in dookie), and I'm stuck with no forms of transport (minus a bike). Parents are trying to find me a way in to shepparton as well as some short term accomidation for me + my stuff while my cars getting fixed.

I'm about 10k from any civilization... and 30k from shepparton.

Get thrashed, hahaha, love it! Leaves a smile on my face.

Anyway: Losing my license. Coming back from the Mont24 at sparrow hill. Not even doing anything stupid. 119 in a 110 zone, overtaking.

Another issue. Passengers foot well seems to be a little damp? Also had smoke/steam come out of my aircon vents at one stage (recently) it has now stopped but aircon still works fine. Seriously wtf happened?

Also I needed to us some film and finish a reel before getting it developed, unfortunately my car is FILTHY and UNCLEAN, so ashamed o myself.

Was the mont good? I would have killed to go but couldn't make it this year. How many were in your team?

That really sucks about your license it will be back before you know it. You really can't get away with anything being on your reds. Maybe look into taking it to court. A friend got caught doing 136 overtaking a semi on his reds. Took it to court with a sob story on how he was still inexperienced and needed his car to get to uni etc. well he got his sentence and fine halved...

Passenger footwell could be one of two things.. Your heater is on the way out, or the little drainage thing from the bottom corner of the windscreen is blocked wth dirt and crap. I got lucky, mine was the latter.

Dubdubdubdot
03-05-2010, 04:27 PM
As for the water in the footwell, I dare say its the heater. expensive to fix?

Mont was amazing, FULLY reconmend it! I'll be back next year! Team of 6, 3 of us was SS'ers (including me!)

^^^ This is despite me crashing twice, doing a lap which was actually 1.5laps, and other varied incidents.
Saw a blue mk5 r32 (4door I think) there as well. Was that anyone on here?

Rocking it at the mont babbbby!

Saving for some GL404 Thule roof racks, Pro/FreeRide Bike carrier (x2) and a 555 fairing. OMG, where are all the 555 fairings! GAHHHHHHHH!

In other news I still need to get onto getting a front lip, and some other stuff to get fixed up. Def's going to hit up a sound system at the end of this year.

Lorenz
22-06-2010, 04:54 PM
Good luck finding the 555 mate! You can still buy the 871XT fairing new from the US/Canada. Keep an eye out on eBay, there are a few sellers who offer shipping to Aus and they are very reasonable and quick :)
Any idea on the part/model number for the bike carrier? Ill be looking for one myself soon!

Dubdubdubdot
22-06-2010, 05:08 PM
Is the 871XT fairing like the 555 or it the smaller (less cool) version?

In terms if bike carriers, I'm going thule once again.
Tossing up between the ProRide 591, OutRide 561 and the Freeride 530. Just wieghing up the pros and cons, I've got three months to decide (suspended lisence).

Gotta decide between downtube clamp, or front wheel off, and fork mounted really. Problem is the fact I have a variety of style of bikes and that will probably increase over the next year or two!

Lorenz
22-06-2010, 06:33 PM
The 871 is a smaller version compared to the 555, but is still cool none the less!

Passenger footwell could be one of two things.. Your heater is on the way out, or the little drainage thing from the bottom corner of the windscreen is blocked wth dirt and crap. ,,,,,maybe a pinhole bottom of the wiper connection

the heater is cheap if u dont need it....pull off the 2 rubber pipes on firewall and bypass heater by inserting a copper pipe,\
reclamp etc (not ok for pink slip though)

As for the duckbill u may like to improvise and use a 96-98 Cordoba one
-I can bring one dwn for ca $90 next weeek...has vents and easily selftaps onto car.
