The Polo has been around almost as long as the Golf. It came in several incarnations.

It used a 1, 1.1, or 1.3 engine. The high revving 1.3 with a tall cam and a webber carby made the car fly. Remember they weigh less than a golf.
They also had worse brakes!

Mk1s, which were the same shape as a Golf, only smaller.

Mk2s which came in three variants, coupe, sedan, or hatchback. The last was the most common and looks like this

Mk3s came out in 1990 and included the G40 version. 1.3 supercharged engine.

Mk4 was the same as seat ibiza

I owned 8 polos at least in the Uk. I had a Mk1 which was so low and loud and heaps of Mk2s. I kept getting them written off in those days, but they were strong cars, I had at least 5 smashes in them, including putting one on its roof and was never injured. I`d then get another shell and build it up again. I finally finished one and old gummer smashed it for me a week later. I gave up and bought a golf.

The Ranger 1.3 version had a nice interior, factory roofbars! and an uprated cam. The G40 was a rocketship, but impossible to insure.

I had a 1977 Polo in UK with an 895 cc engine in it and thrashed it mercilessly until one day it lost oil pressure on the motorway. I drove it flat out for 42 miles with the oil light on and the big ends rattling until it finally threw a rod. It had holes in both sides of the block! It then got a 1300 motor which went really well with the 895 gear ratios! .... until I blew that up too. Also had a 1100 LX (Last of the Mk1s) and an 1100 Mk1 Golf which I still drive when I go over there!

Yeah the 900cc were all right, but got killed on a long trip. I blew a 900cc a 1L a 1.1 and eventually had a 1300cc motor and 5 spped. This last combo was the only one that completed a motorway trip. The four speed boxes and the 900cc just howled themselves to death over 60mph.

Aren't the 90s Polos very like the Golf mechanically? I'm pretty sure they use the 1.9Tdi in them. Jeez...(for a diesel) they would fly! Just think of the the torque to weight ratio! Anybody got any performance figures for them?

The 90s ones were too heavy. The Mk1s and 2s weighed less than a Mk1 Golf. Like 650kgs or something.

My mum just got undertaken last week in her 2001 Polo. Swiped by a P plater - female 10 weeks experience!

For an accident that happened at about 25kmh, she managed $8K damage! Just hope she does not damage my Golf while it is on loan to her!
