Shouldn't the code be in the owner's manual?

Contact the dealer, they should know this, if not direct you to the place to find it out.

A visit to the dealer is the only way I know of. I had to go in to get my code retrieved when i got my new GTI as they were not prepared to do it over the phone

lol next time you steal a radio take the manual as well lol!. On a serious note i had the same issue with an old BMW 735 i bought. I ended up having to buy a code from BMW. I'd say at the end of the day you have no option but to visit a dealer.

welcome to the world of fancy new cars.
VW keep records of them. I also believe its possible for them to plug the car into their computer which communicates with germany to retrieve the code. This is what they had to do with my car from what I was told as it was too new at the time and hadnt been entered into whatever other system they normally use to look it up.

Hi mate
No one will give you code with out proof of purchase or ownership paper (rego papers)
If you do have this they (any dealler) will be happy to provide you pin code for the charge of $20 cause it takes them not a minute
Cheers

I would imagine this would work the same way as getting a new key fob, you'll need to go into a VW dealer, give them the VIN number of the vehicle and proof of ownership of the headunit. If you have purchased this from someone who has removed it from their car, then you will possibly need to contact them and ask for the VIN number or VW may request some sort of confirmation from the previous owner before they will issue a new code. I know this may sound a bit over the top (and may not be the case for a head unit) but I have had some recent experience with VW and they are pretty stringent when it comes to anything to do with security on one of their vehicles. :)
This isn't such a bad thing providing the dealership sorting it out for you is well organised :duh:

If you are not taking it to the dealership for assistance, then I would think that ownership of the aforementioned RCD500 is questionable.

$20 is a pitiful amount to pay for a code, especially considering the car is worth at least 30k...

At last someone has had the courage to do so - this had to be said.
