View Full Version : Opinions on your GTI optional extras/accessories

Hey,
Doing some investigating on the Polo GTI (coming from an '86 Corolla...), & considering some extras;
Metallic paint - pretty much settled on this as the black is looking slightly better than red for me.
CD changer, 6 disc - unsure of the quality.
+ others.
I was hoping to find out owners opinions of their extras (any extra is fine) - both positives & negatives, so as to give an idea of if they were worth the cost.
Thanks.

Mine's black magic. Bit of a bugger to keep clean, but looks very nice after a polish. :driver:

hehe that's my biggest concern with the black metallic paint. I won't be driving mine every day, so it'll be sitting in the garage & hopefully not collecting too much dust/dirt. I wonder if investing in a good duster would be a good idea as a quick wipe over should take care of it?

yep black magic for sure.... not bias at all here :nana:
we can get 6cd changer?? since when?
Welcome to the forums Ralfi! I'm guessing this is your thread at whirlpool
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1167731
Not biased either, but black looks amazing when polished. And you're right, it's going to require a little more attention than a red or white one. However, you seem to be on the right track with the duster; not something I do with mine (honestly never thought about it before) but certainly something I might look in to.
Mine lives outside, no garage or carport where I am. But I wash her weekly so she's happy. :)
Also, I've never heard the 6 CD offered as an option on the Polo. Mum's Eos (and I'm pretty sure the Golfs) come with one. Unless it's something they just started offering?
If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask. Lots of friendly and very knowledgeable Polo people in here. :)

There's a CD changer connector on the back of the RCD200 head unit (that's where I get the power signal for my sub from). So I'm guessing that's what it plugs into. Not sure where it gets mounted tho. Boot maybe?

Let the paint colour wars commence! lol No but anyway red is the only colour to get a hot hatch in imho. I'm actually amazed how glossy the red looks even when filthy dirty. Black is a nightmare to keep clean and too hot in summer, well in WA it is. Madness. That's not to stir everyone up. Everyone will say their colour is the best but I must say Red really stands out in a crowd thats for sure.
In regards to stereo you are better off saving your cash and getting an aftermarket headunit as the sound quality far outweighs a factory unit.
Also you don't want to just wipe off dust off a dry car as you'll just scratch it.

Thanks, pixl. Yeah, that's my thread on WP. Nicely spotted.

As for the CD changer, i'm looking at my print-out of the Polo range features & the 6 disc changer is listed as a "Volkswagen genuine accessory (dealer fitted)". It's been listed on their site for at least the past week (since I started looking at the Polo range).
By the way, how's the sunroof going? Does the sun glare shining through distract you at all? (this is another extra I might consider, if I can bundle it for a nice price).
Also you don't want to just wipe off dust off a dry car as you'll just scratch it.
Really? I didn't know this. If the only way to clear dust is to wash the thing, then i'm stuffed as water restrictions in Melbourne force you to take the car to an automatic car wash...which will be an extra cost.....
The thing I like about black magic is that the thin red line at the front reminds of the Kit car on Knight-Rider hehe, & the subtle redness flows onto the wheels (I should say under the wheels) with the red brake pads....very nice.
By the way, how's the sunroof going? Does the sun glare shining through distract you at all?
Not at all. It's positioned pretty much right over your head, so the only way the sun will get in your eye is if you look up. Unlike the Eos, which has the sunroof portion right up against the top of the windscreen.... that can sometimes be annoying.
If the only way to clear dust is to wash the thing, then i'm stuffed as water restrictions in Melbourne force you to take the car to an automatic car wash...
Buy yourself a couple of microfibre wash mits, a 20L bucket with a lid, car cleaning products of your choice and microfibre drying towel. Fill up the bucket with hot water, add your car wash shampoo and throw in the wash mits. Put it all in the boot and drive down to your nearest car wash (the ones with the bays and pressure hoses.) -- Oh, and take $3-5 dollars with you for the water. This is what I do weekly. It's not so bad if you enjoy looking after your car. In fact, it's kinda relaxing.
The guys who own the car wash where I take my car are really nice and don't mind that I bring my own products. If you're not so lucky, most owners are gone well before 7pm, so you can always go then. Plus there is a place in South Melbourne which is set up ONLY with pressure hoses, but it can get busy at peek times.

Oh hell yeah! All we need now is an iPhone app to use as a remote control for the car.

Colour prefference is a very personal thing, the practicality is another issue. I have black and love it. I think white also looks great on the polo. The biggest thing id advise is the leather. GET LEATHER. I got it by default as they made a mistake in my order and i basically got the leather for free. But it takes the feel of the car to a different class. The quality of the leather seats is quite impressive and combined with the solid feel of the polo sometimes i feel like im in a much pricier car. I personally never use the seat heaters but some people just love them in winter. And looking at the practicality of leather, its just so much easier to keep it looking clean and new. I'm not being biased but if i had the choice of one thing it would be the leather.
And aside from that the usual tinting makes the car look a bit more aggressive
Ralfi
26-03-2009, 08:57 PM
Yeah, tinting was another thing I was considering.
Does the Polo come with slight tinting at all? Maybe front windows only?
How much is the darkest factory tint on all windows (roughly)?
Y2008
26-03-2009, 09:13 PM
there is a slight negligable tint in the glass but no film. And factory tinting is not really factory tinting as dealers just get a tinting place near them to do it and they just charge you a gazzilion$ for it. My best bet is to get it without tint and just research the market and find the tint you want and then find the best deal for it.
P.s: Don't forget to look at a polo with leather :drinkbeer::wasntme:heheh

Thanks for that. Sounds good.
With the leather, i've read it wears a bit after a few years & tends to "cheapen up" from then on, which is why I have my doubts. It's also pretty costly - I want to keep my total expenditure to under $28000 drive away with dealer delivery, stamp duty & black magic included + anything else I can include.
How do you think my chances are of that deal?

You can push them quite a bit. You can probably get it for the MRRP with the metalic paint on the road. I payed just over 29k onroad for leather + metalic. I had to wait for three months to get it. Who are you looking at getting it through?
Actually i payed 28,700 on road, just had to check. The 29,500 was for one that was with leather and sunroof which he didn't manage to source when my order was delayed.

I have Leather and Sunroof too. Love the leather with the red stitching, it looks first class.
If you use Auto Glym Leather Care it should never develop that cheap look.

I second this get leather makes it seem so much more luxurious and more cohesive GTI theme with the red striped leather doors and you get "Wow!!" remark every time someone new gets in it.
Wish I had gotten the sunroof I called the very next day after ordering and I was too late they had already sourced and bought my car :(
As for tint...if you don't mind being a little illegal I'd go 20% instead of the legal limit 35%

Yeah I was spewing I didn't get the sunroof at the time, but I was thinking with my wallet. :duh:
For tint, I went with 16% (as they didn't have 20% in stock at that time). Looks great, is a little dark at night (especially with no street lights) and I wouldn't go any darker than that, but very happy with it.

personally i dont regret getting a sun roof becuase for me id never use it. same for leather seats its an impracticle and expensive add on for me, i will agree they do look amazing, but im anal enough as it is with my car itd just add more work for me to do leatheer care as well. i got black metalic cos i love the colour and have never ownder a black car before, its dificult to keep clean (i new this before i brought it) but like everyone lese it looks very nice when polished, and offsets the red gti line and brake calipers nicly. i alos got window tinting and paint protection becuase i like to prtect my investment.
I didn't want the sunroof, but they messed up and I ended up getting one. I thought like most, it would be cool for a bit and then the novelty will wear off. I was so wrong. I have the thing on tilt everytime I'm in the car -- nice fresh air without the wind/noise of open windows. Also, on really cold days, I have the heater on and the roof fully open. Keeps the cabin very pleasant without being stuffy. Now that I've got one, any car I get from now on will have to have one, it's so useful for me.
As for the leather, never been a big fan plus I just couldn't go past the original tartan. Maybe I'm a little sentimental, but it's part of the GTI history so that was something I wanted to keep.
Also, Y2008, why don't you tell everyone what you told me about the heated seats and how they "move" you.

Do you mean the heater, without aircon?
If you're saying the sunroof can save you turning on the aircon in some weather conditions, then i'd start to consider it as an option. At first, i'd thought of a sunroof as just a fancy way to get air in the car & a cosmetic thing, more for others to look at, but if it's able to be used to increase regular air circulation & save you burning extra fuel by preventing you from turning on the aircon, then that's a big plus.
Actually, you could achieve the same thing just by lowering the passenger side window, so long as no one's sitting there being put off by the wind...it's something to think about anyway. Thanks.

I have the heated leather in mine. Great for really cold nights, except if you leave it on the highest setting it actually burns your bum! j:
IMO leather is a must, I have an '06 model and my leather still looks and feels great. The only way it will 'cheapen up' is if you don't look after it. Just a quick wipe with leather conditioner every few months keeps it in top condition. It's a better quality leather than what they used to use in older cars, so it doesn't really go shiny and crack.
Also, the advantage of leather (as mentioned) is you get the red stitching throughout and you get the GTI logo stamped into the backrests.... that's a nice touch!

Can I ask what the people who got both leather & sunroof paid for their GTI?
Just got off the phone with my local VW dealership - enquiring about a test drive - & they mentioned they have a demo GTI in Black magic with leather & sunroof with 500km & said they'd sell it for $31,000 drive away.
I want to at least test drive the thing, but that money's over my budget anyway, so I won't be getting it.

I'm looking at leasing a 2009 Polo GTI, black, leather, sunroof. They've quoted me $560 per fortnight which includes all running costs (rego, servicing, tyres, insurance, petrol (at $268 per fortnight which I should be able to cut down), roadside assist and the loan itself). Because I do over 40,000 km per year the residual will be 35% after 3 years and if I can't make money out of that then I'm not doing something right.
Just need to get it APR'd and hit the road. :driver:

Which dealer was this?
I don't know if it's because it's harder to get a deal on cars now, but that doesn't sound like such a great deal.

Keep in mind that was their starting price quoted over the phone. Had no interest in negotiating, just wanted an idea of what they were selling it for.

I cant believe you remembered that :duh: I actually contemplated mentioning that and then thought i better keep it to myself. But since you brought it up I'll make the announcement. My girlfriend always leaves the seat heating on if she drives in the morning and i never check when i get it. And after a bit i feel like i need to s**t. :duh: I never turn the bloody heating on personally but i just love the leather.

This is bad news for Kelloggs & their all-bran challenge... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RwX8MzOKOzI
:)
Here's a list of options i'm considering...
Mudflaps, front & rear
Bicycle rack (Is there only a roof bike rack, or can you get a rear-mount type? Is the roof type easy to remove/install?)
Rubber floor mats, front & rear (are people happy enough with the stock carpet ones? Are they showing wear?)
CD changer, 6 disc
Luggage net
Luggage compartment protection, moulded foam, moulded rubber? (unsure, need to see)
Sunblind for rear mirror? (unsure, need to see)
Metallic pearl paintEdit...
Went for test drive today....this is the car for me. I've mark above in red the extras that I don't think are worth including.
Now, with those extras, I was initially quoted $31,000...
But they said I could get it for $27,500 drive away, if I got it that day, but also didn't dismiss that price for when i'm actually looking to purchase in a months time.
