Has anyone played with short shift kits for their mk1s. I loved the weighted shift of the cordoba (a mk3 trick I think) and would like something similar on the Golf. There are a few available in the US but I am wary of buying sight-unseen.

Ahh, yes, lengthened the top of the relay shaft with a piece of 5 mm flat bar 40 mm long, then drilled holes at 105,125 145 centre distance ( from the shaft to the centre of the hole for the rod bushing ) think 105 is the std distance for a factory 5 speed trans. Unsure if the 4 speed is the same measurement or not.

I also increased the selector rod length 15 mm, but found this to be to much for the " across the gearshift gate " movement at the shift lever..put a std one back in.

Did this about 3 years ago, replaced all the bushes etc at the same time, U can get a kit pretty cheap, still in use. It is set on the greatest distance and does definately cut down the fore aft movements. still need to make a weighted rod yet...

If u want pics I can go shoot some on the car..

This is kinda interesting, I pulled my shifter down and started cleaning only to find that a previous owner has already extended the flat bar.

After:

Seems like a little trial and error was involved - or they only had little bits of bar to weld in

I believe I did that a few years ago. That is one of the mods to be done on the 4 speed shifter when you fit a 5 speed.

Ahh, so my search for a short shifting mod still continues... might wait till after we find the new close-ratio box.

Thanks, mystery solved.

With the engine in the car its rather awkward to get as clear shot of the relay lever.. I have a pic from the engine swap, you can see the lever and the extra holes...

just move the plastic bush to the correct hole for the amount of reduction you want.
