G'day everyone. Just got home then. Blew the top radiator hose off again in Hoddle St.(sitting at a set of light's, then steam came pouring out from under the bonnet) & had to take out another inch of hose (it's stretched to the max now!) & hassle a bloke for a bottle water, then nurse the piece of **** home.

Congrates not only goes out to the trophy winners but also everyone who attended the day. Good to catch up with all of you again & look forward to more meeting's & cruise's. Also to the tassie crew for making the trek over. Now that's devotion!!!!
Didn't really pay much attention but it looked like the watercooled club had one of the biggest turnout's. Club's that is.

What were the results of the Mk1-2 class?

Thanks for great day everyone.

Good to meet you all. Congrats to our trophy winners.

I thought it's a bit rough that a '79 MK1 ends up being judged in the same class as a brand new MK5 with a chip in it. But I guess you've got to break up the divisions somehow.

What's next:?: Plenty of good weather ahead!

Hi Everyone,
Glad everyone had a good day. Thanks posting the pics.
I had to work so none of my 3 GTI's saw light today.   Was really interested to meet a few more of you. What was even worse was that some of the VW's from the show were driving past my work on the way home!!

Will definatly be their with all 3 cars next year and they will all be polished to an inch of their lives. I want silverware!!!

Cheers,

Hi Peter, was great to meet you.
I think the mk5s were in the same class as the R32s and the Polos?:?
Not real sure how the classes were broken down. I didn't really look into the way the classes were set.
Still, I enjoyed the day. :)

Hey guys,

Anyway . . . good turnout and my photos will be online in a few days. I'm off to bed!

Peter Jones

The relevant (to us) classes were

ORIGINAL
Golf Mk 1 & 2
Golf Mk 3 & 4
Golf Mk 5
New water cooled
Old water cooled pre 2000
New Beetle
KOMBI camper all years
Transporter T4 and T5

MODIFIED
Golf
Modified Beetle 1958 Onwards
Modified Kombi 1968 Onwards

I can't claim mine's an original Mk1 when it's got an 1800 K-JET and it started life as a diesel, so that puts me up against brand new Mk5s with big stereos etc.

If you had a modified 1959 Beetle you were even worse off! You'd be up against IKON New beetles.

Modified type 3 and 4 (aircooled) got it pretty easy, they only span about 10 years max. Same with Karmann Ghia.

To be fair perhaps there was a weighting system to allow for the age of the cars, I'm not sure what the judging criteria was. It's a really tough job to work out how to break up the classes for these sorts of events.

Not that I'm too fussed, I had fun! I'd just like to be compared to similar cars. I can go and buy myself any trophy I please!

Congratulations to everyone who won. Great day and great cars adgreat people. Surprised by the turnout as everyone was saying that last year only a few watercooled turned up.
Agree with comments about the strange categories. Not enough detail about what is meant by a modified Golf? Is new water cooled 2001 onwards? Doesn't this overlap other categories? The categories were -
Golf Mark 1 and 2
Golf Mark 3 and 4
Golf Mark 5
Modified Golf
Old Water Cooled pre 2000
New Water Cooled
Rat Look - all VWs

JUDGING CATEGORIES all scored out of ten ( ie 60 for a prefect score)
General Appearance
Body and Paint
Interior and Upholstery
Bonnet/Boot Storage
Engine
Underbody Condition

Great to meet everyone and thanks to Elaine for helping me look after Lily. I had some interesting photos on the camera when I got home. :)

My favourite Golf of the day Carl's MkII GTI. Always been a fan of the Mk II GTI, and yours is a cracker.

But I was most impressed with Sean's work on his 16v. (And thanks for introducing me to your uncle too Sean, we're hatching a plan...)

See you all next year, if not before.

Thanks Matt!

As far as plans go, I presume it would be in regards to a phillip island track day. I know that there are some people out there that would be up for a "Course Familiarisation" Day. All that's required is a roadworthy car, a fire extinguisher, a blue battery triangle, and a non-elastic bonnet strap. And of course, a little money...

I've been fortunate enough to actually have a couple of laps around the island in Carl's car. Which I still appreciate a great deal! Great fun! Now it's time for me to drive!!!

As most people will tell you, starting with a stock car on the track is great, then you can modify and feel the car as it starts to perform better...

I, on the other hand, have always put it off...New suspension, new motor, new brakes, seats, etc, etc...I have to pull my finger out!!!

Remember that mk1 racer on sunday, well that had it's first track adventure in stock form, from there it grew into the beast you see today...

Unfortunately, the phillip island website, www.piarc.com.au does not show any coming events for 2007... But, I'll keep you guys updated...

Same. Gunter started with an old passat 1.6 sc, deisel gearbox and std brakes. No rego ect. ect......
I did a couple of road events in my old mk2 2 door and decided that was too rare and good to damage so I then fixed up Gunter to rego status. Ended up with a 9A twin cam, 5 speed, passenger seat aect. You have to learn to crawl before you walk.
If you can drive a relatively standard car fast then when you make improvements to suspension and brakes you become a much faster driver! :)

My thoughts on the best modified mk3/4.
"A" for effort, but there were details the were just a bit cactus and the judges must have not picked up on like golfman said the GT stripes weren't straight and had rough edges, and the right reat Lexus style tail light was filled with condensation a big NO NO in my books. I think it only won because it was HIGHLY modified (albeit all asthetically), bright, clean and different.

I think if I had have entered my car in the modified category (and it is modified), I would have not had a chance against this car simply because it stands out more. I'm not saying the owner of this car has bad taste because I'm sure not everyone likes the way my car is modified.
