OK, this is always a good one for entertainment, puzzlement and just plain information.

Like all cars, the Polo has its own set of noises. What are they?

For example, my GTI makes a strange whirring noise when I open the driver's door after it's been shut for a while. What's that?:???: And what's your quirky noise question?:?

Later dubs prime the fuel pump on opening the door, that could be it.

Hoyhoy.
Ya, now I know what that noise is. I reckon you've hit the nail on the head. Thank you.

Pump will be of the intank variety.

Hmm, sounds more like it's from somewhere under the dash, rather than behind the driver's seat. Doesn't always happen, either:???:

edit: no, I just checked, using the handy plastic tube stethascope, and determined the sound does come from the rear RHS, which confirms the in-tank fuel pump :)

LOL yeah the whirring noise is the only one I can say I have noticed now I am going to have my ears tuned next time I go for a drive :)

What about the electric motor thats running under the bonnet when you turn the car off after a drive?

I think that's an electric water pump that continues to circulate coolant through the block after the engine has stopped

Fair enough. I thought it may be an electric oil pump for the turbo but your probably right.

It could also be the fans cooling down the engine. My golf does that usually after a hard:D or lengthy drive

GTI polos do have a water pump that continues to circulate water after you turn the car off. Part of the reason why you don't need a turbo timer in a GTI...

Cheers!

HI there, new member here from Brisbane with an 06 white polo GTI that i've had for just on 6 months and 8000km now, oettinger chipped for 3 months. Great car, love giving xr6 turbos and the like a fright from the lights and no major issues yet except for what seems to be the usual door creaks, seat creaks and dashboard rattles.

Anyhow, after searching a bit, i have found no threads on this, but does anyone else get a strange annoying whirring/whining noise from the car from time to time? i believe its related to the AC cos when i turn it off it dissapears.

It seems more likely to happen after a fast run somewhere, then slowing down and dawdling along in traffic. Sometimes it can get quite loud and disconcerting because it is slightly out of sync with the engine sound.

Really weird and annoying!...anyway, anyone else get this? im going to get it looked at by the dealer when i have a chance.

Cheers guys.

Yea the AC makes all sorts of god awful noises. sometimes it whirs, sometimes it clicks..... one of the many reasons I avoid using it, well other than the fact it feels like it draws 20kw from the motor.

Ok, this is a bit off topic and not that important, but does anyone know if the little AIRBAG labels/badges are glued on or whether they are supposed to pop out with the airbag or something, a couple of mine are a slightly loose thats all so if I pull them off & try to re-glue them I dont wanna get hit in the face with a funbag

I'd get the dealer to fix it... Should cost you nothing.

When unlocking my car with the remote, the car makes two really loud, high pitched beeps. It's so loud in underground car parks it's embarrassing. I'm assuming dealer will be able to switch it off, will soon find out.

Anyone else's do this? :?

That's what the agents told me it was.

I have found that when I reverse out of my driveway, or when driving up the exit ramp of our work carpark as soon as the front left wheel hits the ramp i get a knock/rattle from the front left suspension. Is this possibly the sway bar connecting to the drive shaft when only this one wheel is raised ? (other 3 wheels are still on flat ground at time of noise)

I get that suspension knock from time to time aswell, i can also feel it through the steering wheel. I also get what feels like steering rack rattle when powering out of bumpy corners.

Just out of interest, does anyone else get a loud clonk from the front brakes when first applying them after being parked a while? e.g overnight.

Nope. You could try reversing and braking gently to a stop, then trying it again going forward to see if you have something lose ?

I get this aswell - was a bit disconcerting but i ahve just learned to live with it... part and parcel of FWD's i think - maybe some poly bushes would tighten it up??

MINTpolo

yes, i believe some cars are prone to the rack rattle, due to their design...my old astina never had it tho, so its a new thing for me, ive sorta learned to live with it.

The brake noise doesnt really worry me too much, feels like the pads just shifting a bit to seat properly.

Wow, you guys are getting the clunks too? WOOOWWW i thought i was the only one and was going crazy. As have said in another thread, have had the shockers changed and it still hasn't fixed the issue. Could be steering rack or bearnings. Is booked in mid june for a week for them to try find the clunk, but i will be terminating the lease early june, so i won't get to see that service. It is a horrible clunk though and i believe has gotten worse the longer i have had the car. And yes i sometimes also get the lound clonk from the brakes too after a long stand still when reversing. Both these noises to me are weird, but the first one is horribel to hear, and nit nice to explain when other people ask what it is.

Edit: Service also previously checked all relevant front end components and tightened and that didn't help either

other people with similar problems here, and maybe some ideas as to what causes it

the AC is so anoying!!! its a loud whirring sound, after you turn it off it stays whirring for about 2-3 sec then goes slient... dont really want to do warranty though with the chip :P I can live with it

I get a clunk from the brakes if i reverse and put on the brakes lightly, then if i go forward and put on the brakes lightly it does it again.

I think the sticky tape holding the calipers on might be getting loose. Definitely need the service guys to put some zippy ties on to fix this one.

I've found rubber bands are almost as good ... but you have to check them regularly for perishing. :D

Does anyone get blip sounds coming from the CD player? Sounds similar to the sound it makes when switching tracks, but just happens randomly while playing back CDs. Doesn't happen with the radio. First I thought it was the GALA function, but happens when car is stopped too, any thoughts?

dont know if the polo has em.. but some cars have grub screws in the calipers that hold the pads in the correct spot... if this is loose then the pad can slide backwards and forwards in the caliper when you apply the brakes and you get a knocking noise from the pad hitting the end of its travel.
had this issue in another car we owned after they had replaced the discs and put new pads in.

Speaking of the stereo - I can't stand how the first second of each song played on a CD is cut out - what the F is going on with that?

And have you ever found a slower player to go from one song to the next? And as for the fast forward/rewind in song............ I'll be buying an old school Alpine 7909 as soon as I can find one on ebay for under a grand.
