went to the motor show and had a seat in the new Golf and I have to say I much prefer the 5.

Not much else to say on that...

How could be it any less exciting than the previous generation base models? If the car wasn't bland it wouldn't sell, if you wanted quirky get something French...

It's growing on me, was interestetig to hear the designer talk about it and the DNA etc etc. The silver one (comfortline with sport pack) doesnt actually look too bad IMO. the base models in any car are boring as bat sh*t though, still dont understand how steel wheels and wheel trims are coming out, the dont cost that much less than alloys and really cheapen the whole thing.

Its probly all about the upsell.

The majority of people on the forums will most likely put their own style of wheels on anyway, so as far as the standard fit steelies and dress rims is concerned it must be a cost cutting measure, even if it's not saving VW a lot of money. Of course it could always backfire as well especially when a lot of other manufacturers are throwing in nice alloys to keep the sales figures healthy, along with other bonuses that are usually optional. As I understand it VW have a pretty good reputation for build quality, so let's just hope that they don't start to compromise on that all for the sake of saving a buck. ;)

Even if it's only a few dollars a wheel cheaper for steelies, when you mulitply that by the total number of steel wheels they're going to put out over the life cycle of the car, it adds up.

Have you test driven the VI yet ? If not, your views are purely just on a visual weight.

Personally I am getting a little used to it but I am partial in my judgement until I sit in one and have a bit of a fang.

. . . steel wheels and wheel trims are coming out, . . .

Really? Is there a pic somewhere that shows the car with the steelies? I really don't mind steelies and wheel trims. (As opposed to plastic wheel covers.)

Boring????
Geez, you must be a very hard person to please!! I reckon they are a good evolution of the Mk5 and I love the dash a lot more than in my car. A very classy hatchback, for sure. Come on the GTI!!

Suprisingly, the more you look at it the more you like. Ok, i get to look at it everyday since I work for a dealership, but honestly it does grow on you. THe interior is a lot classier, and the front end is much cleaner imo.

Wait for Golf GTI, thats where they really look horn!

I agree totally.

At first I thought it looked a bit plain jane. But I think they will grow on you.

Same, I didn't like the look of the MKV tbh until maybe a year or two and the release of the GTI, I really like it now in esp. in the GT/GTI/R32 guises.

Of course it will. Same has happened with the Mk4 and Mk5. The tears in forumland when the Mk5 was released were almost too funny to be true in retrospect. Same will apply with the Mk6. Sure, there'll be some who don't like it, as with any car, but most VW fans will love the look. Even if they might be too slow to admit it right now.

I think they look great!

Saw my first Mk6 at Fairfield yesterday, and loved it. Was a dark red TDI. Looked like it had the alloy wheels from the Mk5 Jetta (5 double spoke?). Rear looks like a mini-Touareg to me but the front looks brilliant, kinda like the Scirocco in pictures. Grille looked a lot different than in the pictures... the slats are a lot thicker and are gloss black, as opposed to colour-coded or textured.

I am amazed that the 125K tdi as in the Golf V GT Sport 08 is not continued in the Oz Golf 6 and is at present only available in some Passat models; also no apearance in UK of a 125K tdi Golf 6. I have done 35000 ks in a o8 Gt Sport tdi DSG and it is heaven. Average consumption for total ks is 6l/100ks

I'm really TRYING to like it.....I guess it will grow on me!

The diesel face the new Euro V emisions, and the 125kw TDI can't meet them even with it's DPF. Very very strict on particles and NO. There may be another hi-po diesel, as the recent Bluesport radster concept car had a 132kw "clean diesel" engine.... and hey I'm hoping it continues too. May not though!

It looks as though we can consider ourselves fortunate to be blessed with owning a GT TDI over here in OZ then  I'd certainly miss it now if I had to upgrade and didn't have the choice of the bigger engine :frown:

In the last 10 years or so, when has Volkswagen ever released to full model lineup at launch?

My guess is, complaining now that there is not GT TDI equivalent in the Mk6 range is like saying "why didn't they make a new Mk6 GTI"?

Patience people. :driver:

Although I haven't driven the MK6, i really think it looks like the South end of a North bound Camel...I loved the MK5 from the get go, but the MK6 looks like poo.

well, having gone over a mk6 TDI sportline that now lives at my work (in white) i reckon they look absolutely marvalous!

i LIKE the fact that they've ditched the round lights at the back.

I LIKE the look of the flattened bumper at the front, between the headlights and grille

i LIKE that from the side, it looks just like a golf should look

i can't see anything wrong with it at all!

Quite agree and there is no way anyone can compare it with a Corolla now!!
Great looking car. :)
We are so lucky to get them in Oz as I can remember the bad times when VW weren't sold over here 81 to 90 was a sad time for Golf lovers over here!

I've seen a few outside of Highway VW and to be honest it's not that bad looking. It's a bit different and stands out from the rest of the boring whitegoods like Corolla, Civic and Tida.
Just think it could be a lot worse though. Just imagine if it looked like a BMW 1 Series! :brutal:
I still think aside from the Audi it's the most stylish and sophisticated hatch out there. :)
Cheers,
Trent

Actually, I don't know what they've done but when watching the VW press release video VW shot in Iceland, it looks quite upright at the rear three-quarter view - more so than the MKV (though I don't know if it is more upright... maybe it is the new rear lights).

I'm sure it will grow on me...

r20 and gti really tickle my fancy tho .. overall it looks nicer but, the change on body curves was needed from mk5 to keep up to date with the market too tho!

its wearing on me slowly!

See the Autocar test (separate thread) http://www.autocar.co.uk/CarReviews/FirstDrives/Volkswagen-Golf-2.0-TSI-GTI/238885/

IMO the new grill and rear lip make this car look much more interesting than the base models...

I don't think that the Golf has ever been a stand out "look at me" type car. But I think it's understated looks are part of its appeal. I'm really impressed with the Golf 6. It's so nice in the flesh.

How many have you seen on the road? I've seen only 2 (one red, one black) and they have been on sale for about a month.

I suppose the economic downturn means it is not a good time to launch a new model...

got a mk6 2.0 TDI loan car...and have to say i was impartial on the mk6 when very first pics came out. over the past 3 months leading up to the release, i have come to dig it.

now that i have driven the TDI :driver:, i am well and truly impressed. no doubt part of the reason why it won world car of the year...

interior is awesome...dash especially with clear white display. the most impressive feature is the road noise...lack thereof. the damn car is quieter than my mkv GTI...and keep in mind this is a diesel! goes to show that the extra 10mm and special film on glass has made a noticable difference.

then there's the torque. once rolling...this things pulls extremely well.

car shows only 562km on clock...and averaged 6.2L/km...keep in mind that's mostly inner city, and no doubt with people giving it a bit of juice.

only quarm is steering feel. they have gone a little too A4 B7 for my liking :duh:...steering feels a little too light for my liking, but something that i would be prepared to get used to over time.

now we just have to sit and wait for the GTI/R20...

Keep in mind that as this wasn't the GTI that the steering would be lighter than what you're used to anyway. I'm sure when you have a drive of the MK6 GTI that the steering will be suitably heavier :)

Had a closer look over a mk6 today.

I am muchly jealous. Much nicer than the mk5!
