Hey Cam. Great to see another GLS getting cleaned up!

Quick note.. If you're going to run a fairly standard engine, go for 40DCOE webers, not 45's. Even with the engine i'm building, if it was purely for the street, i'd be using 40's. :)

Preeny, why do you reckon 40s over 45s?

I forgot to mention in my first post, the Riken Turbo wheels are my daily driver wheels, planning on either:

or

BBS E30

wheels for cruising/shows etc etc.

They will be 14x8 with a massive amount of stretch

Preeny, why do you reckon 40s over 45s?

More bottom end/early mid range. Better fuel economy. More drivable. It will idle nicer.. It's just better for a street engine. You'll lose a fraction of late mid/top end, but really, how often do you need massive top end grunt in a street car?

You could run 45's and choke them down a heap (If you don't know what i mean by that, ask), but its really only band aiding it. You'll be much happier with a set of 40's over 45's on a 1.8 street engine. If you use 40's and think that it's nosing over a bit early in the rev range (which i doubt you'll find), you can always go say 2mm bigger in the chokes to bump the power up in the RPM range a bit, but of course, that is at the sacrifice of some bottom end (It's all robbing Peter to pay Paul when you're in the ballpark tune wise).

I hope i've made sense there. :)

PS, I really like the BBS E30's. Very old school and would look nice with Florida Blue..

Hi mate, thanks for the info.

Sounds like twin 40s may be a better option then. 16v has enough top end - more than ill need as I am about tourqe.

I want to build a relativly tourqey 16v.

Not into revving the tits off.

What would you recomend in terms of a cam?

What would you recomend in terms of a cam?

Twin 40's would be plenty. :)

In terms of cams, no need to go crazy.. In actual fact, if you're after some good torque, you might be better off using the standard cams and purchasing an adjustable cam timing gear.

With an adjustable cam timing gear you could advance the cams a few degrees to move the torque and horsepower band lower. Basically what you want to do is start with a small change and creep it up until you feel you have gained no improvement and move it back to where it was best.

Really, for what you want, the best thing to do would be to get the engine in the car, running, tuned and see how it is. Then you can decide what you want to do from there.

The KR 16v has massive torque for a multi valve engine. It really surprised me just how good down low the standard engine is. They have more torque than an 8v pretty much from idle and are quite impressive.. And i'm talking about what they're like in a Mk2!

I hope that helps.. :)

Have some other stuff but couldent be arsed getting it out and cleaned for the pics.

Question: how hard is it to install central locking in a mk1? Those exterior door handles are from a 4dr because I want to de-lock the mk1.

pretty easy. Stu had remote central in his mk 1 2 door, and also had no locks.

He got a kit off ebay that comes with the brackets and all the solenoids & wiring [and instructions]. and then you just pop it all in with a few screws.

So, not too hard at all.

cause I've got a kit sitting in the back of my audi. and saw stu install one on his car..... The kits [off ebay at least] are fairly straight forward.

Half a day if you know what you were doing. I personally would set like most of a day apart to do it. but that's just me.

Will be good for the Heron me thinks :driver:

I also installed the new headlights on Saturday and cleaned out a whole bunch of dirt and grime from the last however long out of the front end. Fixed the issue with the alternator which was really just a cable not connected properly. I love this car

Unfortunately, due to rain the springs were not chopped/changed out so she is still a 4x4 but hopefully not for too much longer.

Its a secret for now and no one bar me knows about it but let me tell you this, it will create some controversy and will not be to everyones taste but at the end of the day, its my car and I am building it for myself :drinkbeer:

Ok, so I am not going to hide it, its pointless and I want to talk about it and get advice. The plan is still to buy Andrews cabby GLI which means 1.6 Heron motor as well as all GTI running gear.

I will be swapping over the Heron (with K-Jet), GTI Brakes, Koni front suspension (Weitecs coming when I can afford them), GTI Sway bars, Cabby fuel tank and 5sp box (will probably swap for a diesel 4sp at some stage as I am told these are better and stronger?).

Anyway, the plan is turbo charge the Heron motor still running on K-Jetronic so we will see how that goes, so far I have been told its either relatively straight forward or rather impossible to get right and right now I am trying to do some research as to which is correct. I would love it running on K-Jetronic as I would like to keep the car as period as possible. I am in the middle of purchasing Mahle 8.5:1 pistons from the states so these should drop the compression right down to allow for decent boost. I am considering a callaway turbo kit but unsure if these run on K-Jet... silly question, is CIS the same as K-Jet?

Maybe some of the guys on Club GTI know about Turbo and Kjet!

Tim will be able to tell you everything about turboing a Kjet you'll ever need to know.

there was a thread on here that he wrote up that had all the basic info, have a search for that.

K jet ( K jetronic ) is the same as CIS ( Continuous injection system ??)

Pete Jones posted this link some time ago, be a good read for you if you have not yet read it ( or similar )

Hey Jarred, I have spoken to Tim already and gotten some good advice, cheers mate. I will look up that thread because I remember there was some good info amongst all the BS.

Grant, thanks for the link and for answering my question, I thought they were the same but was not sure. I will now look into callaway turbo kit's

So after doing some research, it does not look like it will be too hard to do this. Callaway turbo kits are designed to run on CIS. CIS is the same as K-Jetronic... therefor... Callaway kit on Heron motor = FUN TIME.

Can someone please confirm that standard compression on the Heron is 9.5:1?

Thanks

1600 EG code engine ( GTI heron head) is 9.5 :1 compression from the factory.

Well, today I test fitted the Riken Turbos. 20mm spacers on the front is too much (Don't get me wrong, I love poke but I need to actually drive this car.. :()

20mm on the rear is not enough, I think 25mm rear and 15mm front will be perfect.

Now for pics

So, it saddens me to tell you all that I have decided to drop my plans for a turbo Heron for this car. After doing research and looking at UK classifieds, I have decided to lower this car on some HotTunning coilovers and put tyres on the Rikens and leave it at that.

I guesstimated that the heron conversion would cost in excess of 5-6k including the parts car, that 5-6k will almost import me a Mk1 GTI from the UK or a nice example in Australia and thats what I really want. This way Sam can share Mk1 ownership with me as she loves Mk1s but can't drive manuals.

Cheers
