Hi all, my name is Mark and I drive a 2004 Subaru Liberty 2.5i. I am on the hunt for a new/near new car for my wife, she drives a 1994 Mitsubishi Lancer so pretty much any modern car is going to be an upgrade.

We were looking at the Mazda 3 sp23 (auto) and nearly bought one 2 weeks ago but dealer wouldn't budge on price so we walked.

Anyway, we may be in the position to spend more and since I have heard so much about Golfs (GT and GTI in particular) I thought I would post on here. The Volkswagen website currently say they have drive away prices on all Golfs except the GTI Pirelli, does this mean that if I order a GTI with no options it'll cost me $42,990 no more to pay? If so do you think this price could be haggled down further or are VW like Mazda and stick to their prices?
Would it be a disjustice to get a GTI and not opt for leather or sunroof? I have leather in my Liberty and it is nice but damn it gets hot in summer. Does the cloth look cheap or is it a nice quality cloth?

Besides these 2 cars, there really are no other ones that we like.

Thanks, with a bit of luck and if I can stretch the extra 10K over a sp23 I will be a Golf owner and post here regularly I'm sure :)

the cloth is great. im not a leather fan myself (apart from the smell). i bought my GTI 3 yrs ago when there was only 1 dealer in SA with a 6 mth waiting list... so obviously they wouldnt budge 1 cent. im a bit out of the loop on that dealer side of things now though. someone would surely know around here though. but with the mk6 coming out this yr, there might be a few more opportunities coming up to get a good deal on a mk5 i would assume.

you wont be disappointed. more fun to drive than an SP23... look better... and are quicker.

you can get faster cars for the same money mind you (rex, xr5 etc), but the GTI is a great little beast. nicer interior than those and has a more classy feel.

Hi & welcome,

I have leather in my golf & love it ( seat heaters are great in winter ) but my father in law has cloth in his golf & i think it's more comfortable for normal driving.

Did a post disappear? I thought there was a post here about someones friend that just bought a 3 door GTI for under $40K drive away. Can't remember exact price and what options were included.

Maybe I imagined it?

Never mind I found it in the MarkV section :)

Well, I am now eagerly awaiting my United Grey Golf GTI with DSG and leather. Hopefully it will be ready by this weekend.
