I haven't driven one yet but I'd have to agree that the back end does look much better in person than it does in photos. I saw one the other day and it looks very nice.

The only thing is, do the door handles look as big and chunky in person as they do in photos?

I quite like the wheels on my car, pain to clean and keep clean. I never really thought about the door handles until the comment earlier, they don't seem that bulky in real but I see the point in the photos.

Nah you really don't notice them IRL - they feel much nicer in hand too. I think they're the same as the Passat's handles.

Hey mate,

sorry if my post made it seem like I think the wheels are ugly-not the case, I just wanted to see what some photoshop people could come up with after comments about the MkVI only needing some aftermarket wheels. Your's is the first VI I've seen while stationary and I really like it. I think the handles look chunky in that shot because of the shadows cast by the handles.

I know what you mean about the wheels being a pain to clean-my car get huge amounts of brake dust less than a week after I clean it.

No offence taken at all it's a nice shot.

The rear door doesn't have a big carpark dint in it from some pricks door opening into it like it does now. I never thought I would be so precious about a car.

Cheers

Don't worry mate, I'm the same and I think most of the users on here would be too. Ever since I've had mine I've been increasingly protective of it hehe

I constantly worry about my car when its in carparks. I try and park furthest away on a nice safe end spot but sometimes even then you get tards park next to you. A guy yesterday was putting his kid in the car next to me, he nearly scratched my door with the button on his jeans. It was just luck that I had come back to the car in time.

It really ****s me when people don't care about other peoples property.

I went and had a squiz at the MK6 today (I couldn't help myself)

Its very nice, interior looks great definitely looks more luxurious than the MKV Comfortline/Pacific. The front is what surprised me the most its gorgeous! Much much nicer in person than photos. Looks mean but its still got that refined look about it. From the back its got a wider stance on the road than the MKV, and the bumper is nicer than the plain black with the MKV.

The handles are a bit deceiving, they look chunkier on different colours. The black/white they look fine but they stick out more on the blue/grey.

I'll stob yabbering and show you some pics. I tried to get some side by side shots to show the difference between MKV/6.

Found this on another forum tonight. I wasn't to sure about the MkVI, but I'm officially swayed.

Is it real or Photoshopped? looks a bit odd where the VW badge should be. Still, looks fantastic.

Where are all the photos? Looking for pics of 3dr GTI's in Candy White, Red or the Grey.

Not convinced on the 18" detroits or sticking with 17's and doing aftermarket wheels. So hopefully people have some photos of both as well :)

My local dealers only have a black 5dr :(

Two days in a Golf GTI (http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newforum/upload/showthread.php?t=37425) has Swallowtail's photos of a grey GTI.
Four days in heaven (http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newforum/upload/showthread.php?t=36905) has MurphyTheElf's Candy White 5 door with 18" detroits. Page 4 (http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newforum/upload/showthread.php?t=36905&page=4) has Hail's Red 3 Door with 18" Detroits.

Dealer accessory wheels are pretty rare. Unless someone has bought one and had these wheels fitted and uploaded photos themselves, I dont think you'll find any pictures.

There is this link (http://www.golfmkv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=75361) of a Red MKV GTI with them though.

Thanks mate, but they are not quite the same.
The Vision ones i'm talking about are in the download brochure for the GTI
http://www.volkswagen.com.au/etc/medialib/vwcms/virtualmaster/en_au/new_cars/golf/pricing___specifications.Par.0023.File.pdf/77804_golf_gti_brochure.pdf

Any reason for people not ordering the dealer accessory rims, or is just because they are expensive compared to after market stuff?

Corey_R
01-12-2009, 08:16 AM
Aaah... they've done the 'Shadow treatement' like they have done with the Denver to Detroit upgrade. So they are the same, just one has black paint on them ;)

People don't typically order dealer accessory rims because they are expensive. They can typically cost ~$3800, compared with the 'factory upgrade' from the 17 to 18" which only costs $1200.
For ~$3800 you can get practically any great quality 3rd party wheel you'd want. If you don't mind going for replicas then you could get 2 or 3 sets for that price! hehe

http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/804/wimmerrsvolkswagengolfg.jpg

Wimmer's take on the new VW Golf GTI is almost all about performance and very little about appearance. The stock GTI rolls out of the factory with 210 horsepower and 280Nm (207 lb-ft) of torque, but after Wimmer RS gets its hands on the 2.0-liter turbo unit, those numbers are increased to a hefty 386 hp and 455 Nm (332 lb-ft) allowing the hot hatch to achieve a top speed of 267 km/h or 166mph.

This extra power comes thanks to an optimized turbo, the use of a sports CAT, a modified intake system and fuel pump as well as a reprogrammed ECU just to mention a few of the upgrades.

Wimmer RS also installs a sports clutch and a height-adjustable HR sports coilover suspension system while the package can be completed with a choice of 18-, 19- or 20-inch alloy wheels wrapped in high-performance tires.

Having seen quite a few MkVIs recently, it has to be red. I was overtaken by a white MkVI GTI on the freeway last night (well, it was mostly white but with a lot of reddish mud splashed around the back end) and it passed me in a most sedate manner. Had it been a red GTI it would have wooshed by as all red cars must. :)

You could say that about blue R32's but what can you do when its just an awesome colour!

Corey_R
02-12-2009, 01:09 PM
Yeah - but I mean white cars in general. Go into a supermarket carpark and sometimes you'll see 50% of the cars are white and silver, and then the other 50% are made up of every other possibe colour. Although the blue is the majority of the R32 sales, that blue (and other manufacturers similar blues) is a small percentage compared to 'white'.

Nice MKVI!
I like the dash mat, I know a lot of people think they're ugly but it does protect the dash if you have to park out in the sun all day long. Mine isn't garaged and at work it sits out in a paddock practically. Combination of dash mat + windscreen shield protects the car nicely.

In saying that though I probably wouldn't have it on if I had better parking accessible.

The wheels on the green MKV GTI above were the standard 18" option wheels for the MKV. I believe they called them 'Karthoum'. Not many people got them because they look pretty generic and they also required the fitting of ugly plastic 'wing extensions' in Australia to comply with regulations about wheel extrusion.

As for the Red MK6 GTI in the showroom, I believe that they're the BBS CH wheels (http://www.amgaustralia.com/wheels/BBS.aspx) (or a copy)

I'm really in two minds over the GTI's rims. I tend to agree that they don't look particularly spectacular. But on the other hand they instantly identify the car as a GTI.

And that second shot is really impressive, T-Bone, the cloud hiding the sun gives a dramatic quality to the picture.

Those rims in 18", with a sensible drop (15mm maybe?) - now that would look sensational.

What sort of photography gear did you use to capture those beauties?

Thanks guys, took them partly because I found it hard to find wallpaper with the mk6 gti in carbon steel! One of the previous photos in this thread has been up on my desktop for a while now. Now I have my car, I'll be taking quite a few.

I used a Canon 400d and my legs as a tripod. Fast shutter speed, high iso/exposure and a lowish aperture if you're into this kind of thing.
Will post a few more if I get any other good ones!

My personal opinion - I think that drop (as it appears) looks ridiculous.

Those rims in 18", with a sensible drop (15mm maybe?) - now that would look sensational.

Watch out for speed humps!!! Yowsa!

There's one on mine to :P But yeah I love it and will never forefit it on any new car purchase from now on.

I got quite a bit in it. Leather, RNS510, Premium bluetooth, sports pack, RVC (another thing I will always have now), sunroof and wishing I had got adaptive chassis control and dynaudio now... will get it on the new jetta when it comes out.

I just dunno how I will cope without a 1.4 TSI if they don't bring it out in the new jetta, what an engine!

Hey Guys,

Some quick photos I took today! Got 1500Km's on the clock now, I've run the engine in just in time for a trip up the north coast for Easter!

The photos aren't very scenic (or much thought put in to them). Hopefully I will find a decent place to take some photo's when I head away for holidays over Easter.

Can you please answer one question though. Is the manual gearshifter illuminated in red? Or is it just red paint/plastic?

Well hopefully once i've saved a bit more I'll look at putting some 18's or 19's on it, however the 17's actually don't look too bad up close. From a distance they look a bit small though. The number plate holder doesn't really bother me too much yet, I actually thought it was standard part of kit.

The manual gear shifter itself does not light up but where the two front reading lights are (and where the alarm sensors / sunglasses holder is) there is a red light that points down to the shifter. I only first saw this when I was in a street with no street lghts so it's noticable but not distracting. It gives a warm red glow to the shifter!

Corey_R
29-03-2010, 08:15 AM
Yeah - the std 17's are just looking a bit dated due to how cool the optional 18's look with their black painted 'interiors'. The front numberplate holder is part of the std kit, but since it only fits a single number plate correctly, most people end up with a situation like you have, where the number plate only covers a small portion of the holder and the fixing holes etc are still exposed.

Thanks for answering the question about the manual gear shifter, another person on this forum had asked the question. Those red lights were also in the MKV. They light up the interior just enough at night that you can see where everything is in the interior without having to turn on one of the proper lights.

Cheers :)

3M Paint Protection requires stripping the car down to the clearcoat prior to application, the car has had a layer of nanokote sealant + wax applied to it, which helps achieve the current look and depth of gloss. So I'm not really in any rush to remove either

Now you have me worried about my GTI, should have gone for silver or white?

Corey_R
31-03-2010, 08:43 AM
Pfft! Don't be ridiculous! Silver and white are for boring peoples (sorry, no offense to the boring people ;)). Plus, white and silver show stone chips better, get a stone chip on a black car, and you've got dark metal below it anyway!

But yeah - I can understand DracZ not wanting to put paint protection film on that surface, because obviously the clear coat has been buffed down to a mirror, sealed, and waxed. It looks awesome, but in my experience from friends, it's not possible to maintain that for anything other than a show car. It's just that in every day motoring, especially if you drive on highways and in the country, you are GOING to get stone chips and scratches.

For regular people who are happy with the 'factory paint finish', get paint protection film applied asap after delivery, and when you come to sell the car in 7 years, the paint will be as good as new!

nicandlance
31-03-2010, 10:19 AM
Excuse my ignorance, but when you get the film applied, do they have to strip the clear coat back, or can (and do), they just apply the film over the showroom finish?
I am considering doing it....
perhaps just to the bonnet (front area). Just depends on price. After all the hail damage, we are out of pocket having to replace our other car which was written off also.

The clear coat is on top of the actual paint, but most detailers will polish the clearcoat to rid it of any imperfections, allowing the depth of paint to shine through etc. Wax further deepens that shine and also adds a further layer of protection to your clearcoat.

In the process of applying the invisible shield however, all wax and paint sealants will have to removed in order for it to properly adhere to the surface. So in effect it goes right on top of the clear coat and nothing more.

IMHO I would still go for a proper detail sans any application of product on top of the clear coat, that way you will still rid yourself of the numerous scratches / swirls that the dealer has lovingly added to your car in their "pre-delivery" detail.

I talked to James from 'Invisible Car Bras' here in Melbourne about a quote for my 118TSI earlier, be happy to forward you the prices via email etc. Just let me know.

Yes, this is great advice. To go one step further, since the car has to be 100% perfect before you go sticking film on top of it, I would arrange that the detailer comes to the workshop of the 'Invisisble Car Bras' person on the morning of the installation of the paint protection film.

As part of the process of the PPF being installed, it's the owners responsibility to ensure the car is clean/cleaned on arrival, so getting a car detailer to do it is perfect.

Hey guys,

Here's my baby. :P I'm as new to the VW family as well....my very first of their breed.
1300k's in, two and a bit weeks as an owner.....happy as Larry.

Spent most of yesterday going over it with a fine tooth comb, or a fine micro-fibre cloth might be more accurate.
Wanted her looking it's best for some pics. :)

It's weird...seeing these pics, more so than in person, I realise how much it needs a tint.....:1orglaugh: That'll happen in the next few weeks...

Also, I've been visualising how much to drop the height....Please excuse my very lame attempt at photo-chop/shop....:(
At a guess, I think this would equate to approx 40-50mm....?? Maybe too much for my local roads, but at least with coilovers I have the option to raise it. ;)

My 5 door with 18" Detroits in need of a wash. Next to my Datsun 1600 club race car. Amazing how you think the Golf is a small car until you see it next to a "family car" from 1969! The Datto has been lowered obviously but it looks a foot shorter that the Golf!

Well that's one way to get rid of the big ugly plate holder...

But it leaves gaping holes in your bumper!

Corey_R
23-04-2010, 10:28 AM
But the holes are plugged with the two black plastic caps which cover the screws on the original ugly holder. I think that picture looks HEAPS better than if the holder were there!

elisiX
23-04-2010, 12:03 PM
Ah I didnt notice the plugs. I thought they were just holes.

I agree - with plugs its worthwhile.

Now where would you source these plugs that fit?

AdamD

But the holes are plugged with the two black plastic caps which cover the screws on the original ugly holder. I think that picture looks HEAPS better than if the holder were there!

Trouble is, it looks like they've drilled holes into the bumper to mount the plate using the plate's top mounting holes. As a result, the plate appears tilted upwards at an odd angle.

I've bought (and received) a plate from Lakin plates that's designed to fit over the front bracket and cover the stock plate holes... now I'm wondering if it wouldn't have been better to get a custom bracket made up to mount directly to the bumper instead. Oh well, I could always do that... I'll see how the car looks when the bracket I've purchased is mounted, when the car arrives in a few weeks.

Edit: I wonder if the bumper's holes (that mount the stock bracket) are in the same position as the plate holes on the stock bracket? I doubt it, but hey, if I'm lucky, my Lakin bracket might fit to the bumper directly as-is. Anyone who has removed their stock bracket care to comment?

AdamD
23-04-2010, 02:14 PM
Now where would you source these plugs that fit?

As per what Corey said:

...two black plastic caps which cover the screws on the original ugly holder...

So my guess is they come free with the car. ;)

elisiX
23-04-2010, 02:33 PM
I think your guess would be wrong.

The dealers have made it clear to me whenever i've asked that the plate holder will not be removed.

Now the client of this dealership might have got someone more accommodating who has taken off the plate holder and sourced the black hole caps.

But I doubt this will be a common occurrence or offered to customers.

Corey_R
23-04-2010, 10:50 PM
I can confirm that the 'black plugs' are the plugs from the original ugly plate holder. You won't need to source these from anywhere as they come with the car.
There is another member that has alread performed this modification and confirmed this. (I've just done my 2nd 14 hour day at work in a row, so I can't be bothered trying to find it now, so just take my word!)

As for the plate not sitting correctly and tilting upwards at an odd angle, that can be resolved by placing a rubber washer behind the plate (or plate cover) so that it sits flat on the car.

elisiX
23-04-2010, 11:19 PM
Great. So I should have no reservations with ordering black euro plates because I can simply take them off, remove the plate holder and use the plugs (with some washers) to fit my slim line black euro front plate. Corey for attention to detail and knowledge is bloody nuts brother. Keep it up.

Read back a few pages. You can fit rubber plugs.

It seems they are the ones off the plate they removed.

Might be something you can get from Clark rubber etc.

ps. I cant see the holes in that picture? (also - you can fix your slanted plate by using washers to flatten it against the bumper)

Corey_R
27-04-2010, 10:08 AM

paulcito
27-04-2010, 08:06 PM
Yes - photoshoped.

The 2 holes that come with the plate do not align with the 2 holes on the GTI's bumper (the plate's holes are narrower)
The dealer had to drill 2 new holes on the plate and fitted rubber plugs.
However there was nothing they could do to the 2 original (plate) holes.
Will post a photo later

There are actually three versions as described in the manual for the RCD 510.

These new buttons (as on kennyc's car) are the new version C, without dedicated buttons for features that generally don't work in Australia (eg TP), and with separate buttons for AM and FM. I expect that all new RCD 510s delivered to au should be of this type.
