a twist from the other thread ive started.
apart from the usual, wheels, engine, noise, etc answers lets try and make it something different.
for me (apart from the obvious stuff).
* the little red lights over the console that help you see what youre pushing in the night.
* the way i can push the indicators either way and them flash 3 times without actually pushing them in to lock
* the netting under the hatch shelf to store stuff
* the glovebox!!! (small as it is. i didnt have in my VR6)
* the way it auto locks the doors at 15km/h
* the way it unlocks the doors when i remove the key.
thats it so far.

What about the way it still gets from point A to point B and saves you walking ?? :driver: :)
By the way I'm sure this will make for an interesting thread

I think so, but in these tough times the dealers are not as sheepish when it comes to giving away a few extras to get a sale !! :sheep::sheep::sheep: baa baa baa

1. Holding the key open unlocks the car and then the windows ..leeting some of the hot air out BEFORE you get in.
2. The way the GTI manual fits into the top of the glovebox allowing more room in the glovebox.
3. The confortable ride and handling in the twisty bits.
4. Pulling away at lights
So far I love everything.
:biggrin::driver:
Haven't driven it enough yet to find anything wrong. I'm sure anything that does come up though is only going to be petty.

These are the features that stick out in my mind so far.
- When I open the boot using the key fob, it opens all the way up by itself due to the struts. Very handy :)
- Auto up/down switches for all the windows
- self canceling indicator stalk
- Flip key :)
- Under seat storage drawers
- dipping mirror on reverse that can be canceled.

the pop noise between gear shifts in the DSGs!
also the fact the steering column has angle and telescopic adjustments
oh and the design of the steering wheel is perfect. thin there its meant to be thin, fat where its meant to be fat

I particularly like the strut that holds up the bonnet/hood. Today, I checked the oil and sub-conciously tried to unhook the strut from the bonnet! :duh:
First car I ever owned with a strut. Makes me realise how potentially dangerous cars without them can be.

the way changing gear with paddle shift (DSG)
I like the cruise control how you can 'de-accelerate' with the same button.
Didn't have this on the i30. Instead I would have to cancel it, adjust my speed then re-set it.
After driving it on a reasonable trip today, I love:
- the handling! Feels like it is on rails. Not so much as the GT sport of course, but its extremely surefooted on the road. Its a nice feeling knowing you've got a car that can handle properly ;)
- the grunt! Overtook two cars doing 90 in a 100 zone in sixth gear. Naturally they both planted the accelerator and would have been doing atleast 110km/h, but that didn't matter because I was already passed...hehe
- the feel! Whether it be changing gears, closing/opening doors, opening the boot, parking the car, doing a 3 point turn, the car just feels perfect. No clunks, no bangs, no smoke and no hassles!
God I love my Golf...lol
:nana:
And I like the one touch indicators.
Geez I could go on all night at this rate.
I think I'm officially a VW Convert.
Now I just need the hat + shirt and I'll be right.

In this thread it was mentioned that the left mirror can dip automatically in reverse. My 08 GTI doesn't do this - is it possible to turn it on?

I think (but aren't certain) that this only works if you have electric seats (with memory ? ). A search will probably find a few relevant posts to confirm (or deny) what I remember.

i think you need factory park sensors for dipping mirror to work.

yep that wat the dealer said.
i was just wondering if it would work if it was just vagcomed to the car but it does not appear to.

Definitely 100% you have to have the reverse PDC to get this to work.

I've got the parkers, but no dip? Is there a setting you need to turn on somewhere?

With my Jetta, I had to set it in the MFD to auto dip on reverse. Then you have to make sure the mirror knob is switched to the L position for the dipping to work. If you have the mirror at 0, it doesnt dip.

Do you have genuine factory fitted sensors or do you have overpriced dealer fitted non genuine $30 sensors sold for $800+ installed crap?

You can do a simple test by putting the gear in reverse while the engine is running, switch mirror control knob to L position, then adjust the left mirror looking down manually using the knob.... and.... switch back the mirror knob to O position (while gear still in reverse).
If the mirror returns by itself to the original position then you DO have the auto-dipping function (but wasn't set properly).
If the mirror stays looking down even after the knob returns to O position, unfortunately the test fails :frown:

One other feature I like is how the arm rest can be adjusted higher as well as slide in and out.

This forum is worth it's weight in gold!
I had opted for the parking sensors and was looking forward to the "auto kerb mirror function". On closer inspection of my (recently revised) contract I see that it is now listed as Non Genuine Dealer-Fitted Accessory. Didn't stop them charging me full-whack for it ($727 +GST).
I'm awaiting delivery of my vehicle, and haven't paid up in full-yet, so emailed the Dealer tonight to see what they are going to do to resolve this.
Stay tuned.

If they haven't fitted them yet I would cancel the order of the dealer fitted PDC. I can send you a like where you can get the equivilant ones for for USD $35 delivered and fitting them is a few hours work for someone. Normally I wouldn't recommend this but the install is straight forward and the dealers rip you off blind.
The factory PDC is so much better, the sensors fit flush on the bumper and it integrates into the car properly. I'm waiting for someone to mess up my rear bumper and I'll replace it with a pdc bumper.
I too had the same problem with PDC, I ordered a car from the factory with them but had some issues and the dealer offered me PDC on another car. They said the same as the factory and genuine VW which was utter crap and they wanted an extra $100 because they had to fit them. $890 for $30 of rubbish, no thanks. If I had gone ahead I would have been wild at pickup of the car when I found out. And mirror dip on reverse will NOT work with aftermarket, the salesman told me that IT WOULD work with their installed sensors.
That's what you get when you deal with Austral VW in Brisbane however, Highway Auto on the other hand were up front about it and much cheaper.
Check out what bluetooth you're getting as well, I'd put money on it being one of the cheap solutions that doesn't integrate very well. Ask them for the specifics on the bluetooth, model, vw part number, how it operates, do you get touch screen dialing and so on. When I say cheap as well I don't mean for you, you'll still be paying something like $890 to $1290?

Maverick,
Thanks for the advice. I am sort of inclined to go without at the moment.
Would appreciate if you could post the link for the cheaper version, and any known links to fitting instructions. I'm not sure what's involved, but I'm not real keen on popping holes in the bumper myself.
And I've already turned down the Bluetooth option with my Dealer. I don't know what parts they were going to use, but from what I can read here, the only BT worth having is the overseas model which integrates with the RNS-510.
This car is clearly capable of so much, yet VW doesn't seem to be really leveraging it's full potential - it's left to individuals to hack their way around. Ridiculous.

I'm looking into finding some sensors that are close to the factor ones and that will work with the oem controller which will make the project a lot simpler.
You can also add a camera to the RNS510, I've done this and will be putting a guide together soon on my website.
These are similar to the ones the dealer would fit.
