Hi,

Even though I'm a week away from actually taking delivery of my Polo Gti, I looked around to see if there was a section where people can post their favourite drives around australia.

It could have state based sections, or around major regional cities and capitals. They could be scenic or challenging or whatever people like

People could post google links of favourite drives such as

http://maps.google.com.au/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=brisbane&daddr=Mount+Lindesay+Rd+to:nimbin+to:-28.157979,153.223572+to:brisbane&hl=en&geocode=%3BFTD2Tv4dAFYZCQ%3B%3B%3B&mra=dpe&mrcr=1&mrsp=3&sz=10&via=1,3&sll=-28.237859,153.469391&sspn=0.60856,0.870667&ie=UTF8&ll=-27.996827,153.251038&spn=1.219852,1.741333&z=9

and talk about highlights and why they like that route and such.

Apologies If I've somehow not spotted a pre-existing section.

Also if there is another Australian forum with this kind of section, please post it to me.

edit: There's some initial discussion located at my newbie thread also - http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newforum/upload/showthread.php?t=25046

I've got a few, but this one is my favorite.

I really like this trip & you have no problem's stopping at apollo bay or lorne for something to drink & eat.

It also has alot is different driving sceneries from really long flat straight's, to tight twisty rain forest stuff.

http://maps.google.com.au/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=drysdale&daddr=apollo+bay+to:The+Esplanade+to:-38.268511,144.411335+to:drysdale&hl=en&geocode=%3B%3BFa5Ct_0dOFyaCA%3B%3B&mra=dpe&mrcr=1&mrsp=3&sz=13&via=2,3&sll=-38.286433,144.448757&sspn=0.101056,0.153809&ie=UTF8&ll=-38.364272,144.049988&spn=0.807576,1.230469&z=10

Question though.

How do you post up pic's of google maps?

I did a similar drive to yours recently when on holiday in Victoria.

http://maps.google.com.au/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=131+King+St,+Melbourne+VIC+3000&daddr=Surf+Coast+Hwy+to:Great+Ocean+Rd+to:Great+Oc ean+Rd+to:Port+Campbell+VIC+to:camperdown+vic+to:g eelong+to:131+King+St,+Melbourne+VIC+3000&hl=en&geocode=%3BFSTMt_0d-jqaCA%3BFRQ0tf0d4ueWCA%3BFSqWsP0dwD2QCA%3B%3B%3B%3 B&mra=ls&via=1,2,3&sll=-38.151837,143.063965&sspn=2.172821,3.482666&ie=UTF8&ll=-38.281313,143.791809&spn=1.084482,2.785034&z=9

The view's are amazing and the road challenging, the lack of overtaking lanes (and inconsiderate slow drivers who didn't pull off on the run offs) made a few places a little slow for my liking, and I was driving my soon to be traded in Proton Satria GL 2000 (hardly a pocket rocket). I beleive the Great Ocean road is probably one of the must do drives in Australia.

I was amused by the constant signs saying " Australian's drive on the left hand side of the road" which I didn't see anywhere else in Victoria.

There were heaps of Koalas near the road on the turn off road to Cape Otway which pleased my girlfriend endlessly.

for taking pics off google maps I usually take a screen shot (using the Print Screen key) paste it into a picture editing program and cut out the bits I don't want (Windows Paint will do even)

The most intense driving I exprienced in Victoria and partially NSW was on this section of road - http://maps.google.com.au/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Jindabyne+NSW&daddr=buchan&hl=en&geocode=&mra=ls&sll=-37.591383,148.551636&sspn=0.547353,0.870667&ie=UTF8&ll=-36.945502,148.268738&spn=1.104138,2.785034&t=p&z=9

There is a 100km stretch of a thin gravel road there where on the left hand side you had a large drop down the sides of various mountains. It was a lot of fun but my concentration was put to the limits.

And your surrounded by wilderness in a national park. Not to far from there the Snow Mountains Way / Snow Mountains HWY ( Kosciusko National Park NSW) makes an excellent day drive, as scenery goes it was also brilliant, although I almost ran over a family of emu's trying to cross the road.

Ive done Jindabyne to Thredbo and on to Victoria via the Alpine Rd a couple of times, its a fantastic drive.

first time was in a rented 6 cylinder commodore, and was on snow chains and half the distance was on dirt roads.

Since then Ive done it in a minibus too.

Both times, the vehicles were well less than brilliant, but the route is spectacular, specially in winter

Best drive I have done was between Wodonga and Bairnsdale in Victoria...Down the C531 to Tawonga, then across the Tawonga gap to Germantown, then turn left and head down the B500 and over Mt Hotham, through the dinner Plains to Omeo, then down along the Tambo River to Bruthen, then right and up to Bairnsdale...It is about 350km of very twisty, technical roads, tight hairpins, long sweeping up and down hill corners and long straights. The traffic is quite light during the warmer months, and it is one of the best drives I have ever done.

Maybe we could have a sticky thread for each state, aptly named "Favourite roads"?

Welcom to the forum... You will enjoy the polo and us guys in Brissie do like to get out for the occasional run up Mt Nebo et al....
Sounds like a good idea, Mark ... might 'push it upstairs' for their perusal.

Trouble with Nebo is ... it's too well known, crowded and often has a blue flashing light on about every second corner ... takes all the fun out of it.

HI Guys,

My fave used to be the Great Ocean Road, we had a house at Aireys Inlet, I used to get up early and take a blast to Lorne, before the traffic got out of hand. Yep, too many tourists, driving slowly.

Now, my new favourite is the road between Wodonga and Eskdale

http://maps.google.com.au/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Jindabyne+NSW&daddr=buchan&hl=en&geocode=&mra=ls&sll=-37.591383,148.551636&sspn=0.547353,0.870667&ie=UTF8&ll=-36.945502,148.268738&spn=1.104138,2.785034&t=p&z=9

Fast flowing sections, tight twisties, bugger all traffic. Just brilliant.

I may or may not have had my TDI Golf up to 195 on one of the straights..

Tried out my newly chipped Polo Gti on Lion's road the other day.- http://www.bigvolcano.com.au/stories/lionsroad/media/2008/LyonsMap790_10.jpg

This road is made for little "hot hatches" twisting around, up and down (made my girlfriend car sick). Highly recommend to any Brisbane/Gold Coast/Northern NSW resident.

Edit: found a better map/description - http://svc050.wic466d.server-web.com/images/beaudesert/lionsroad.pdf

and watch out for cows ...

Did the drive yesterday with a few others.. Not quite made for a fat ass car like mine with stocko suspension, but it was still awesome! Can't wait to hit it up again once i've had a few mods done...
