i bought this car when i was 15...first car :) so technically i didn't write my first car off when i killed the golf! :P

After only a short time with working on dubs i decided to buy my lil beast... i will try and dig some pictures up of what it used to looks like when i first bought it (was painted but i hated the colour). i stripped the car and started prepping it for paint...but then after long discussions with numerous people i decided to buy not 1 but 3 golfs in the time span of about 12 months...they all got scrapped as some were jut for parts and ones was killed :( and thats where this dub stopped.

and here we will start again :D

i know its not watercooled (yet :D) but i wanna share with you the passion i still have for vw's!!!!

can't find any pics of when i first got it :( but i will keep trying! it was an ugly mettalic brown colour...then i noticed a bit of rust!!! so i sanded it back and back and back to find more and more...popped the windows sure enough...RUST! so i sent the car across the road to the welder and paid him to fix it all...now its rust free :D

Before i did the body work i replace the plugs, leads, dizzy cap, rotor button, points and did a gearbox oil change and a motor oil change...runs like a dream!!! i started it it first crank after about 9 months of sitting there last week :D

anyway here is the begining, first the damage:

;) right on the ball my friend EJ25 soon to be or a 12a because no body mods need to be made :)

so basically i have spent quite a bit of time on it already!!!

and a crap load of money...

I have brand new:
Seals (everything!), headlining, carpet, sunvisors, door cards, running boards, one piece windows, rear drums and lots of little things too.

I have perfect chrome handles all around...basically everything to put it back together!!!!

i even bought the paint! all i need are some low back seats (t shape runners) and early 62 'blade' type bumpers and i'm set :D

more pics going up soon when i find them...will tkae some more of the progress over the weekend!

Good stuff Stu. My first car was a Beetle too, though it didn't get most of the TLC it needed and deserved. I say keep it air-cooled :wasntme: but I'm a bit old fashioned that way. Go a 1835cc or sumting and you won't need no water (but plenty of $$$)

or build an 1835 with straight cut cam gears :D

The 1776 in my old man's Karmann Ghia is pretty good. Twin 40mm Kadrons, HEMI heads, counterweighted crank, berg cam..

There's no need to go for stupid capacities and massive carbies/heads/cams for a daily driver. The Karmann goes quite well for what it is (massive bottom/mid) and gets pretty damn good fuel economy, as Dom, Jarred, Josh can attest to.

To be honest, you'd get jack of a 2.3 with big IDAs and a high overlap cam REALLY quickly.

By all means buy that engine (that's pretty cheap if it's in good nick and done no work, however it depends on what heads are on it too), but i'm just giving you some advice. :)

Here's a bit of inspiration fer ya:

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2009/01/DSC02296_crop2-1.jpg

A lot of fun can be had in a stock 1600TP motor as well - cheap, plentiful, economical, not enough power to get you into trouble ;) I had a 1300 in mine and it was great for a first car - you could rev the hell out if it and you still didn't go too fast, but reliable as hell too.

I also suggest looking at/joining Aussie Veedubbers http://www.aussieveedubbers.com/Site/Welcome.html for the wealth of info/advice to be had there. If you haven't already, that is.

found out the specs on my motor well some off them...

maybe tim is interested...if he isn't spraying weeds :P

It has a 84mm crank the case has been clearanced for this.

92mm barrels and pistons *not sure if they are flat top or not...will find out sooner or later.

044 head not sure on the valve sizes but i know they are larger than standard 044 head ones

twin 48 IDA's

and i dunno what else... but i have been looking around and it should hopefully run an 11 sec 1/4 without trying too hard :D (if i get traction :P)

2.2L! Nice

2234cc to be exact! hahaha

Nice sounding setup stu & should be very streetable. Especially with that capacity.

What's your cam of choice?

Will sound pretty good on 48 IDA's, no doubt!

I'm not a big believer in the 11sec 1/4 though sorry.

You need alot of power in a beetle to run that fast & a hell of alot of work to run that aspirated!

I remember a melb. bloke who was making 400+hp with a turbo'd 2.2L beetle & was only just running high 11's. That's with slick's, all the suspension mod's etc.

Do a search on the blue VOLLKOMMEN ART "stylin" turbo'd beetle.

Also check on aussieveedubbers for Dave Butler's 11.00et @ 121mph beetle.

This thing is crazy & aspirated! Nothing stock about this beetle

2699cc, 14:1 CR, Methanol/injected.

Can't find the weight, but it isn't heavy!

It's too soon to be talking times without the overall engine, suspension package, but I'm sure you will be happy with it!

this is true maybe i'm just too hope full :P

well its the biggest cam you can get for a beetle motor i was told...aparently you can't run it in 4th at 60 or it will caugh and splutter...

i can't wait :D should sounds the tits! but i hate to think how much fuel it will consume :P

can't wait to get stuck in and rebuild it :D

On a 84mm stroke that would make it 2332cc.

I hope there's some very special headstuds in there:) or those heads will exit the car via the hubcaps.

Should be an awful lot of fun, I've built a few strokers before but I stayed away from the 94mm barrels.

Do everything you can to manage the heat in the engine bay.

All the tinware, new tinware seals, oil cooler, stand off the decklid etc.

I'm pretty sure stu's ordering a stand off decklid (kit?}

I would have voted to hot rod the 1500, but alas stu wants the power!

I can't wait to help him rebuild it before it goes in, I've always wanted to work on a beetle for some reason :? :D

Stu's also mentioned a few times to me before that it's a 2332 aswell.

haha yeh i can't remember the name for it... but there are studs you can get that go the whole way through the case...i will be getting thee asap if it doesn't already have them!

should be a fun little engine...was told it lifted the fronts when it was in dean's old manx :D and easily did 3rd in the dry...but then again i have to see it to believe it!

i'm going to run an external oil cooler with a thermo switch and a fan next to the gear box... that should suffice with the deak l stand offs i hope, unless there are other options?

Very nice Stu. I just read up to date. Should go quite hard although i don't know if you'll "enjoy" driving it on the street with a massive cam and carbies..

But hey, It's a 2.3 so it shouldn't be too bad!
