so i am very likely buying a mkv in the coming months so naturally, im checking out suitably modified versions for ideas.
i come across this thread http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=4186479&page=1
and my question is, whats the deal is small wheels tucked way under the guards?!?! i think they look stupid!! is it a yank thing? is it a me thing? i love the old skool bbs wheels but they just look wrong on the mkvs. theres so much body for so little wheels?
am i strange?

not really "strange".
In the eyes of my dad, I defaced my car by taking the VR6 badges off in favour of the clean look.....he just doens't "get it"
smaller wheels probably allows you to run lower, which on their better roads they can. they are bagged and frame/chassis/c notching to gain(lose) that extra inch...
There are that many on RS4 wheels, then the next favourite would be CH's...so to go retro like RS's is a nice change. Even if it doesn't grab you 100%, it does for some of us. There are some well styled "retro" rides, as well as shaved/cleaned/bagged tucking 19s, race looks, and subtle/OEM+ mods...and the US boys are doing it all.
Variety is good.

I agree - I don't really like old school BBS on a MKV.
I love them on a MK1 or MK2, but anything newer and it just doesn't sit right with me. But those guys are having fun :)
Being super slammed/tucked/bagged in a MKV seems to be more of an American thing... but I think that is because the MKV GTI is a bargain over there (around 24k USD new) compared to what you pay in Australia, so there's a much younger crowd involved. There are definitely exceptions to this though.
But the thread you linked to is likely to bring out the more extreme examples, as they're the most memorable.
That first Jetta is beautiful. The wheels are appropriate to the age of the car... and the height is still pretty tasteful without grinding sump ;)
Here are some links to generally more conservative stuff...

Way to make your Golf MkV look like a riced 1990's Civic.

yeah i saw that in the thread there, but i think a lot of that Honda look has to do with the stretching of the pic (as mentioned).
i don't really like the bbs rs etc. on MKV's, they just don't suite. the newer BBS definitely, they look great!

this car is nuts!!!
i think the US have their own distinct theme with their car modding.
Its different, just like Japan have their own style.

^ BBS RS (usually with wobble bolts as the trend grows) on a bagged MKV R32 is akin to polka dot clown pants on a supermodel.
It's funny, but sad and disappointing at the same time.
Saying it is original doesn't fly either.
The guys who do things first spend a month with the wheels, take some photos then flee the scene as the tsunami grows.
I have B7 RS4 Reps (from VMR), so I'm FAR from original according the US based threads... but they do work well with the aesthetics of the MKV.
Just not perhaps suited to those with a 5 sec attention span/tolerance for wheel fashion (they are soooo January 2007, darling).
The BBS RS are a fussy, complicated wheel on a bloated shell of a car (MKV).
But look amazing on the angular, lean cars, like the MK1/MK2 Golf (or scirroco/Corrado) where they cut through.
Angles with angles, curves with curves.
opinions, like a55holes etc etc. mine is no different. :)

Meh I like it and I don't.
I reckon if it's done well (and I have no idea how to define or pinpoint that at all) then it looks good. Going too small on such a big car is pretty silly, just like going too big on a small car like a pulsar (bro...lol). For me, it allllll depends on the look of the car that you want to go for, the wheels themselves, and the height/accessories around the wheels that make an impact on how they look when on the car.
It's actually just like other car mods for me...I can't see how things would look on my car until I physically put them on; buying wheels (or even other dramatic cosmetic mods) is a HEEUUUUUUGE thing in my humble, hopefully tolerated opinion. :).

i love that super low look with BBS. although in saying that i am one of the younger mkv owners so tinto is probably right :)
but in a lot of those pictures the cars are riding on 18's 19's and 20's which are hardly small for a hatchback, even if it is a fairly big hatchback.
i guess my car has the same feel as the ones in that thread?

i prefer your look to some of the ones on the threads listed in this thread.
alot of the yank cars look WAY to big for the wheels.
