hey guys,

finally got in touch with the sellers brother.rego just finished 8th dec so I have to organise rego after I pick her up.dont think its wise to pay prior to picking it up as some sellers claim their car is immaculant ..dont they??
http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r311/yiorgo_gti/44ec_1.jpg
http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r311/yiorgo_gti/4860_1.jpg

apparently rta now offer 3 or 6 month rego only online,so ive goto devise some sort of plan to pick her up,get it pink slipped then rego'd online.unless the car is sooooo good that I can get 12 months rego in confidence the car wont blow up on me !!!

he said that both seats dont flop forward and mentioned something about internal issues??? was vague when I asked him if that meant the GB bearing being noisy as that was the only mechanical issue mentioned on the listing.

anything else guys that I should look out for when I look/drive it????:driver:

Jmac
29-12-2008, 08:12 PM
Hmm they were bad for diff bearings, see if it is noisy in every gear, not a bad box to work on mate. The seat issue will be broken cables for sure common as, not too hard to fit either. Im sure it will need wishbone bushes but that is a given anyway on them. Get the Cam belt and tensioner done too. Any dramas or questions on this beastie chime mate done MANY years on these
Cheers

Technically you bought it off him on ebay and are now in a legally binding contract.

Still if it has lots of big probs he did not mention, I`d be haggling or walking.

At least you got it for cheep.

I still reckon you should get it transported, or rent a trailer and borrow a 4wd. Trying to do a pinkslip and rego in a day in a strange city and a strange car. good Luck.

jeeze man you got that cheap... congrats on the purchase. looks strangely similar to the s2 sitting in my back yard :P

gpk_gti
30-12-2008, 08:23 AM
you have a s2 sitting around mischa???

here is what he listed as being changed,
New tyres, new radiator, new battery, timing belt, new headlight, and most the other parts are in good condition, serviced reglarly

here is what he said had issues,
It's in pretty good condition apart from the following:

- scratch down the side, wearing gearbox bearings (ul still get 12months or more out of it), passenger seat does not go forward to allow passengers in the back, drivers side elctric window doesnt work

loon,do you know what window regulator corresponds with this car? u got one maybe???

so far he told me both seats dont work.if there is more than that and it is something serious, then stuff paying 1800 or maybe even taking it.he said driving back to syd will not be a problem.
I have a sneaky way of bringing it back as long as the car is relatively in a sound state.

will keep u guys informed.

PHEW!! what a day! BIG THANKS to DUB20V adrian for being my buying a car pick up BUDDY today in the heat!
finally made it back to sydney with the new baby!... car is better than we expected.gear box whine is not that bad, even at 110+ on the freeway.it sounds like a bearing whining more than anything.
the drivers side window works but is straining itself and needs a hand to go up that extra 3cm.
interior is not bad, needs a good clean, same for the body work.
car has that typical 5cyl sound...it will liven up once I chuck a free flowing exhaust on and a cai as robin recommended.
anyone know how to turn on the spot lights? I flicked all the switches and couldnt get them on,maybe they were disconnected when it went through import compliance??
is the b3 the same wheels specs as most audi's? 5x112??
is that the old style tape holders in the central rest? cant open them....

Note the injector cooler!!!! Yeah mate they are the old tape holders and i see there is a tape stuck in one. Wheels are 4 stud mate. Keep me in mind if you are going to change the wheels:)
Check the Timing belt history. Its a pita to do and do a water pump when you are in there. The belt is tensioned by the water pump and you always knacker the seal when adjusting the belt.
Great to see someone on here with one of these , brings back lots of apprenticship memories. Had a ball with these and when the Rs2 came WELL YEHA!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mate even the S2 was tops

Jmac

That looks a lot better than It did in the sellers pics.
Finding nice wheels for these is difficult. I've looked into adapters to change from 4x108 to 5x114.3 and they are available on Ebay.
Saying that Tirerack in the US have a some nice wheels (ASA AR1's) and they ship internationally.
I'd be really interested to know how you get on.

no JMAC,they dont illuminate when ignition on..ive tried when low beam/high beam and pressing all the 3 buttons in the center.

I pulled open the drivers side door to see what condition the window reg is in WOW!!! one green plastic runner has cracked and when I opened the motor the cable had flipped and twisted itself. ASV wanted $290 for a window reg with cable, so I think ill try and get the cable re manufactured.been told its about $120 or so... do you guys think maybe the cable off a AUDI cab/ mk3 cab would be able to modified and fitted??

everyone today that saw it freak out how clean it is,,,I must say ,it needs some TLC then it will be smick!

looks like ill try some adaptors...you got a link superfly.nn?????

ps- going on holidays tomorrow for a week guys,so ill get back to your replies when I get back!

Audi Cab is the same Reg mate!!! with lights on pressing the buttons they should light up. Ok try this, does the switch actually illum with the dash and centre console etc with the switches in the off pos?????? if no then they could simply be disconnected at the switch or blown fuse, cant all be faulty.

maybe porsche 924 rims????

Hi - congrats on a rare (in Oz) car.
Wheel studs are 4x108 but porsche 924 wheels wont work as the offset is way wrong. If you go on the OzAudi forum for sale section there have been some guys selling wheels that will fit. You might need to search back a little and then pm them or something.
The fog lights only come on with parking lights and go off again if you switch to main beam.

Some volvos use 4x108 and have some nice BBS 16x6.5 as an optional extra on S40s

Not too sure on the offset though.

thanks guys for the wheel suggestions!! will be looking into those thoroughly after I fix this DAMN WINDOW REGULATOR!

while I was on holidays,my mate looked closesly at the wheel inside the window regulator and the gutters that control where the wires sit have been ruined.there are a couple of AUDI CABRIOLETS wrecking so ill see how much they want to rip off for before looking o/s.window is being held up with some blocks of wood ARGGGHGHHHHHHHH!:brutal:!!!!!!!!!!!!! any other ideas guys????

tomorrow ill try and give it a good vacuum and polish...ill post up the pics when I do.

the fog lights dont come on at all, even with just the parkers,so I suspect either they have been disconnected when the car was imported in or the globes are gone...check that also tomorrow.

the timing belt was done last year,I have the receipt when the radiator and belt was done... $780!!

car hasnt been started in 8 days and it turned over first go today!

ok,spent 3+ hrs washing and waxing the exterior this arvo..ran out of elbow grease and gave up on the interior.
seems specific places on the body have been washed or rubbed with a scourer pad.,wing, sunroof, part of the bonnet,a pillars and top half of the boot.I tried with Autoglym paint renovator then autoglym super resin polish but the scratches are way too deep.BUT the car looks much better ! take a look!

did a couple of small mods, removed the audi,2.2 badges and stuck on my spare stubby airiel......
managed to fix the fog lights,it was a bad earth on the globes themselfs.once I removed the globes the lights worked.
also fixed only the passenger seat which was not flipping forward, both cables are broken and 2 half pieces are missing,so I connected and did a shifty to make one, which now works.
anyone know if you can get just the cabel or one of a similar car????

Use wire instead of a cable for the seat mate.

I`d pay the money for a window reg, its gonna be hassle getting one from o/s or rebuilding one.

I have seen lots of silver audis with that paint fade. Must be an aussie sun thing.

Car looks good though, dont forget its supposed to be a daily :nana:

gpk_gti
18-01-2009, 06:51 PM
its not paint fade matt, its definately some type of hand scratching that is extremely deep.

so you are saying a straight piece of wire not flexible?
ill try and find a diy way of fixing the reg first before I bite the bullet and get new.

im not going the fully modified way as I did with the mk4,just get it looking clean and ill be happy(ok ok maybe some wheels, lowered and exhaust!:bluesbro: ... hehehhehe )

another thing u can do to make it look like the the face lifted model is buy some red tint spray for the rear indicators paint them red. It will look like the latter ones which looks 100x better.

Mate if you have 1 cable working then cable tie the other hook up permenant till you get one. This way the seat will still lock in and will still fold when the cable is pulled:) Seen that one done heaps of times. The bonnet and roof of my 90 is all crazed the same as that mate.

only noticedthis! score and a half.. i saw one driving around the day i got back actually.. very nice!

with the paint having scratches, you can try 1 of 2 things, using 2000-2800 wet sand paper and sanding it out then buffing/cutting it back and waxing it.. you should be able to get about 50-70% of them out without ruining the paint as im very sure the car hasnt been machined in its life very often before. before doing that would be best to try machine first to see how u go . or 2nd you can get it blended.

looks good george! definitely agree with the red tail tints as kosta said tho!

yeah im actually contemplating either dropping a s2 motor in or just putting a dirty big turbo on!!! hehehhehehehhehhehehehhehe......

on a car this old,its just a challenge to just get all the things running smoothly and properly let alone doing serious mods!

having owned a heavily modified vr6,a stockish a6 now owning a fast mk4 gti I can honestly say that Ive grown more mature(alot of ppl dont believe that hehe) and speeding is out of my system.Cops are everywhere, fines are way too steep and serious .I can no longer justify spending $10k + on mods. so complaining that ppl dont post mods and build threads is silly. maybe the ppl that complain about this should start posting their own build threads instead of complaining others are not.

looking forward to having my nice clean cruiser on its feet soon!

after all this little niggling problems ill get a serious service done, oil, filters, injectors cleaned ,leads and plugs.

reg is coming from seventeen mile rocks .,07 prefix.

emailed a guy on ebay about making up a set of adaptors,
It is possible to make spacers from 4 stud Pcd- 108 to 5 stud Pcd-112 but spacers have to at least 45mm to 50mm thick as you are changeing the number of studs. Priced around $175 + postage and handling each.
bit confused on what the price is exactly so ive emailed him back.

i didnt know you had a 90, i dont like your chances of fitting my wheels on a 90, my sister has a 90 with 16"s and they scrub, smaller arches than the 80, ive got a 90 quattro as well i should try them out on that.

cleaned the interior like new on the weekend.... no cracks or damage anywhere...
fitted some new globes to tacho and speedo ,fitted window reg ,works like new!

in the rear central arm rest there is a bag that opens to nearly the gearstick,,,really crazy thing, has a valve and is heavy duty plastic.. took me a while to work it out ,but I realised its a bag for your skis!!! hehehe

also bought this on ebay, won it by 1p! tip, always bid with 0.01c extra,so if you want to bid $10.00 always put $10.01.I have won heaps of stuff using this method.

I found these in 4x108, they look nice, not sure on your taste and how much you want to pay, but Vortex wheels classifieds has a 4x108 section.
These were cheap .....

any ideas if 18's will fit??? pedies said that the wheel arch is lower on the coupe......

coby
27-01-2009, 09:10 PM
I know B4s have a fair bit for flared arch up front. You could always just swap the front quarters from an 80. I think it's a direct fit. AFAIK the rears are the same clearance wise.

im not really that crash hot on 18's again and feel that 18's will not fit my daily driver look that im after... 17's max ,but would prefer some 16's......

what I should have said robin is something off a audi/vw 16's which would suit it better....
bought these cheap on ebay ,off a citroen berlingo van, which matches offest and pcd,but center bore is 65 as a pose to 57 on the audi.

george why not just buy some 5x100 or 5x114.3 or 5x112 wheels and have them re-drilled? would be much cheaper than buying from overseas or getting adaptors...

gpk_gti
01-02-2009, 09:25 AM
drilling those to 4 x 108 should be ok?? im a bit of a noob when it comes to knowing what can be drilled or not.....

obviously the offset has to be correct in the first place right?

love those shots 16v80!!! exactly how id love for the coupe to look!!

George, if you find some 4 stud wheels with flat backs and room for another set of holes, its an easy redrill.

5 stud to 4 can look like that pic you posted.

evorobin
01-02-2009, 10:44 AM
Agree you need to fill holes for 4-5 stud.

Carpoid did a guide to indicators if you use the search function.

The only red coloured spray i found was by a company called 'Specialty' they call it lens dye and you'll probably find it in Burson or Autobarn.

Have a look in my Corrado section mate, theres some pics there etc.

You don't have to pin stripe them like i did if you use orange LEDs and resistors...

Hi

In regard to the rims, back in the UK you can get 16" and 17" RS4 replicas in 4 x 108 and 4 x 100 to fit your car, from what I remember they are quite cheap, last time I looked the rims and shipping were less then a $1000, if your interested I will try and find the link for you.

Earlier ford focus have 4X108 and around +40/45 offset I think. Check out the options for those as far as after market wheels.

picked up the wheels this morning.... hmmm.....bloody ugly!! im going to spray them matt black in hope of them looking better.
center bore is slightly larger and 2 have some serious gutter rash but for what I paid for them,I suppose what do you want??
they are about 2cm smaller diameter than the stockies.now I have to lower the car,I might get the original springs re coiled......
