Figure I'd start my own thread, so I can add pics, ask questions and show you guys what I'm up too and what I'm doing.

The plan:
:? Havn't got any long term plan. First off is just go over the car and neaten everything up, get rid of the rust and make it look decent. Pretty major service is on the list too.

Making it look decent atm includes a respray and chrome bumpers. The rest I'll figure out as I go along.

I'm planing on spraying at the end of Jan, and hopefully roadied and reg'd by late feb/march. I'm leaving myself a bit more time to both prep and spray this time, hopefully for the benefit of the end product.

I'll also whack my GTI brakes and exhaust off my old car, aswell as a few other bits and bobs I've got laying around.

Then I'll daily it, putt around and fix other stuff as I go. Plenty of crusing too! Might play around with bio diesel once it's up and going too.

Car details:
79 GLD 4 door. 1.5 Diesel & 4 speed. ~180,000 kms showing on the speedo. Been off the road for about 1 year. body is reasonably straight, no major dings/prangs. Plenty of rust spots here and there, nothing too major. Luckily clean floors and A pillars! Interior is in decent nicks. Seats are good, carpets faded and worn, dash cracked, but has a dash mat.

on with the pics!

It's not much to look at at the moment, but give it time ;)

Welcome to the up hill battle.

The tailgate has been "repaired" previously, and was covered in bog! It'll take alot of work to get straight.

I lifted one of the quarter flares, discovered a dint and some rust, then kept the flapper disc going, and well, the whole rear LHS quarter has been bogged! No obvious signs of significant impact, but it's plenty rough, and will take alot of work to straighten, and eventual rebogging :duh: There's still more that I havn't uncovered, I got a bit depressed about it, so I stopped that for a while and decided to have lunch.

Pics:
Tail gate. Bog was removed with flapper, and primered. Now i've just taken to it with a file to show the high spots. which there are plenty of!

rear qtr. Doesn't show the damage much, but all that was bogged. I reckon most of the C pillar will be bogged too. grrr....

Nah, you wouldn't want it, it's pretty rubbishy.

James, just give me a buzz sometime if you wanna get ya hands dirty. Just not tomorrow or thurs, I'm away for new years.

I'm hoping that Stu will have some spare time soon, so he can drop by and weld up a few things for me :)

Wouldn`t you just use a better tailgate and save your energy on that one?

If its bogged nicely on the quarter and not rusty, I`d leave well alone and blend your bog into whats there.

Looks alright tho.

Yea, well the only reason I started hacking into the bog was cause there was a bit of rust there, also a few bog cracks. I ain't trying to make this car perfect, so I think I'll just blend in with the old bog. Should be alot easier in the long run. hopefully.:bluesbro:

I gave the tailgate a once over and pulled a few dents. A few holes to be welded up and a bit of crafty welding, + thin bog layer should get it pretty straight. We'll see how it goes & what stu can do on it.

Today was relatively productive. sanded back the bonnet and roof. and hit a few random spots with the angry grinder.

Roof still needs work to remove the rest of the rust spots. A pillars need alot more work, but not too much welding luckily. I'll treat the rust that's left in a few of these spots, then later on high fill and smooth them, (ie on the bonnet]

Pics:

worst of the rust I've found so far. will need new metal.
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2009/01/PC260010-1.jpg

all the red spots are texta, and the spots that need to be taken back to bare metal, like all the other bare metal patches are currently.

So how is all the window openings looking ?? nothing like the rust that grows under the damned seals...

Dunno what you think however with the rocco I was considering using a small sandblaster to clean out the rust and paint, then lead wipe the areas where the seal actually sits and dress that back to the correct profile. The lead tins the bare steel giving it maximum corrossion resistance, then do the primer and paint over the top of that..

Maybe check out with one of the tech colleges if they do adult education in car bodywork ( they do this here in the west along with a great course on automotive painting and upholstery )

Think rabbitparts are still selling the rear lower corner repair sections also.
saw some in UK last trip as well but cant think of the vendor...:duh:

Jarred
05-01-2009, 08:03 PM
Sandblast would be great for the front window seal area. Would clean it up very well. I'll get rid of as much of the rust as I can and go from there. Atm, there are only one or two very small holes.

I don't mind if it's not perfect, as this is only meant to be a cheap get about/project, not my "ulitmate golf" build. Having said that, I won't be cutting corners in a safety respect. I will have to look into lead filling, or similar a metal filler though.

I have my crashed 3 door for parts, so any sections I need I should be able to take/mod from my 3 dr. same goes for the rear lower corner. There's a few bubbles under the rear window, so no doubt there will be some there too. I havn't taken the window out yet, cause I don't want to wreck the rubber, and don't really want to smash the glass {although I have a spare}

Today's work.

Bit more rust removal and removal of the door windows & chrome trim. only 1 or 2 of the outer scrapers are worth using again, the other's are knacked. I have some spare bits lying around though. Maybe I'll swap which side the rubbers are meant to be on and have it Cal look?? Phenominally harder job than it should be. Also interesting to note a few of the difference between early and later model doors. or maybe it's aussie built and german built ??

I'll take the doors off soon, one by one, and treat them for rust. Still have to get the front fenders off, damn seam sealer...grrrr...

a day of ups and downs. I was getting really PO'd that I couldn't get the front gaurd off, cause of all the seam sealer.

but alas.

a good 3 hours later (all up really) and hey presto, it's off! rust isn't too bad, mostly surface, but the bottom of the gaurd needs patching. Can't believe how much dirt is stuck up under there! Luckily with all that seam sealer, there's no holes on the inner gaurd. yay.

so now, I'm happy again.

finally got both front fenders off, real struggle, but needed to be done, and were a bit of a mamoth task. nothing like that on my old 76'er.

also, thanks to dad, got the rear pass door off,. one of the bolts sheard, infact 2 did, but 1 I got out, the other had to be drilled.

Car is now stripped of all hanging panels. I'm happy at the moment. hopefully make some more good progress this week, before the tennis;.

I have a problem with doing work on the Caddy, its called other peoples VWs and they take priority so as to pay the bills. I have struck a couple of hiccups, I had to removed the Loctited water pump bolts to mount the Alternator bracket today and one broke. All fixed now and I am sorry for highjacking your thread Jarred!
I recieved my invite to the Nats in the mail today, I will have to see how my looong running split thing goes as to whether I will make it up there this year. If the caddy goes together too slowly it might have to be entered in the "rat look"!!!
Mk5 would be a nice ride up there I spose. Let you know mate.
And well done with your work, its good to see you are doing it properly.

Well that's it for a few weeks. I'm working fulltime for the next 2 weeks at the Aus open. So it'll be hard to get any proper work done, due to lack of time & energy after work!

As it sits - no welding or bogging\smoothing done. Most of the doors are ready to be hit with high fill & smooth, 2 need cleaning up on the inside. both gaurds need a bit of bogging but are pretty straight over all. roof still has a few spots of rust that need to be hit. & I still have to re-bog the rear left quarter. most of the door jams & the boot are ready to prime & spray.

Probably about 1 weeks work there. Hopefully by end of 2nd week of feb {14th/15th} it'll be painted/finishing top coats. Then some mechincal repairs (finally! yay} & a service then put it back together. hopefully RWC, Reg'd by the end of feb!

Well, that's the plan anyways!

I've decided to add some white golfs for inspiration:

minor but important update.

I bought mah paint today! yay!

The paint + thinners was about $225, and I still need a bit of primer aswell! That was 6 litres, which will be PLENTY for the whole car, inc., eng bay if I ever do it.

Bit more than I was hoping for, but it should be good. Will be buying a gun and compressor soon too, well next pay day really.

If also finished the tennis too, so I can start getting stuck into it again! looking on track too get some primer on her by next friday and get stuck into some final smoothing! :bigok:

I'm pretty excited.

Jarred
04-02-2009, 05:45 PM
another small update:

got some more toys today! well just the one. Got my gun. neat little unit, nothing fancy, but should do the job. I decided to go with a gravity feed, rather than suction, just cause it's what I've used before. It has a nice and small pot on the top so it will be nice and light to manuvre.

I won't get paid till next wens for oooh.. the other 90 hours that I did at the tennis, so the compressor will have to wait, unless I borrow the money... off mum :D

I don't think I'll get any primer-ing done till next week probably now. that's what happens when you loose motivation, even though I'm so close! gah!

I did some welding today! woot!

yes, I, did it. got sick of waiting around for favors, so I thought bugger it, i'll give it a go myself! - how hard can it be!

actually not too hard. just fiddled around with the settings till I got some that I was comfortable with, and hey presto, I was welding.

I'm not saying that I'm any good or anything. Someone who actually knew what they're doing could've done what I did in half the time, but never the less.

I'm pretty sure I got enough penetration on the welds, and most of them cleaned up pretty good after grinding them back. Minimal if any panel damage too. I think

Still have more to do tomorrow though, but I'm getting there! :D including some stitching, but fingers crossed.

and pics, cause it actually happened.

Watch you don't put too much heat in when you're grinding the welds off.

Grab a flapper disc for your grinder too so you don't gouge out the surrounding metal. They're about the same price as a grinder disc just gentler and a much smoother finish.

You need to keep the panel cool as possible to avoid distortion. I use a soaking wet rag to take the heat out between welds and when grinding.

Other than that it's all practice.

Make sure you're wearing all the safety gear and have a bucket of water or a hose nearby. Remember that you can't see flames through the visor and you may not know that you've set yourself on fire. (Seriously)

and like Dom says, surface preparation is everything, use your new flapper disc to clean up the panel for a good area around the weld and make sure your earth clamp is attached to freshly cleaned metal too.

For what you're doing, use short bursts on the trigger, wait 'till it's no longer glowing red before you pull the trigger again. When you're begining a series of spots will be easier than a long stitch, especially in rusty sheet metal.

We'll have you lead wiping in no time.:)

Don't worry guys, prep was all there. Nice and rough, and all metal too.

You're going to need to clean a larger area than shown on your pictures.

The smoke and fumes from the burning paint will affect the weld otherwise.

You're going to have to remove the burnt paint anyway so it's better to get it out of the way up front.

Roughness doesn't matter, in fact your'e probably making the job harder by removing metal along with the paint.

Which process are you using? Gas or gassless MIG?

Good on you for taking a crack at it, that's how to learn these things.

Pete

Jarred
09-02-2009, 04:26 PM
Using Gas MIG Pete.

I don't remeber burning too much smoke, but I'll look out for it extra tomorrow.

Had all the safety gear on too.

All good advice though Pete, I'll take as much as I can, thanks!

Yeah rayburn is REALLY painful.. Especially on the inside of your leg when you're welding in shorts all day... :duh:

I used a premixed primer other day [and trusted it] it turned out to be much too thick, hence sprayed really rough, which means lotsa wetsanding! yay.

I'm half way through the wetsanding & then everything with need another coat [which hopefully will go on much smoother] & then the final wetsand before it's ready for colour.

Pics.

Wetsanding always brings out the hidden sins. Bonnet turned out to be not quite as straight as I thought.

Nice work Jarred, have you had to buff the paint back at all?

Jarred
05-04-2009, 09:03 PM
Yea stu's on the money with the setup Except it's 400L/min, not CFM. Also 3HP. Would set you back about $600 at the cheapest. Compressor isn't a super high quality one, but does the job, as does the gun. Nice and simple to use, perfect for a DIY'er. Some of the fittings and/or air hose wasn't a perfect fit, so I had air leaks which was annoying, but I work around that.

Paint will need wetsanding to smooth it, and then buffing to make is nice and shiny. Roof and Bonnet aren't the best. I'll see how they come up after wetsanding, but I might give them another coat if I'm not happy with how they turn out. Finish off the gun wasn't the best in some places, but really good in others, go figure. A bit dissapointing, but I'm not a pro, and never claimed it! Got one big run and a few other small ones, they should wetsand out easily enough though [fingers crossed].

After wetsanding, I'm planning on taking it to a detailer [or getting one to come here] to have a mop over the paint and get rid of the small wetsanding abrasions, and give it a decent shine.

And the next time someone tells you that white is great cause it covers up all the imperfections, tell em it's BS! haha. White's just as shiny as any other paint, so don't expect a johnny mayer finish from a mick jagger base! To small extent, it is true though. Very small extent :bluesbro:

Hope that answers everything. Anything else, fire away. 6 weeks and counting.

& I'm still on the hunt for the afore mentioned detailer as well,

anarchycamp
05-04-2009, 09:15 PM
your inspiring me....:p......i keep going back to thinking ill have a go at the few panels that need painting on mine but as its metallic it concerns me, i know its never going to be a pro job but if i could get it decent id be happy.

ive done a flat red paint job before and it turned out pretty well after a lot of prep. smash repair places are so damn expensive and generally dont want to touch older project cars unless you throw thousands (5-6-7-8k etc) at them.

i dunno... :?

Jarred
05-04-2009, 09:34 PM
well, AFAIK, metallic's are harder to spray, cause you have to 'hatch' your spray pattern.

It would be good if you had a mate that had a setup, so you could borrow him & his stuff, and get a small paint tin and have a crack at it. It may not be that hard after all.

Alot of the paint work is what you do after as well. The way it's cut back is very important to final finish & depth etc. Hence why I'm getting a detailer to finish off my paint work.

Perhaps do all the prep work, & have the car in primer, and then get a place to just spray and finish the car. Should keep the cost at around 2-3K I would imagine. All they are doing is spraying a whole car, so they shouldn't be too expensive. Prep is time consuming, so doing that DIY, could save thousands easily I reckon

For my "ultimate golf" project [still planning & saving for] that is what I will be looking at doing. Depending on how much more talent & experience I get between now and then [AGGGGEEES away] will help me decide wether I do it or not. I won't be after show quality kinda stuff, but would want it to be pretty damn good, with the car kinda being my 'party piece'. I do enjoy bodywork & spray, & the feeling of having sprayed your car yourself is a pretty cool feeling. Unless its a really sh*t paint job! j:

All depends on the pennies. If you're not confident with a gun or want a super top finish, I'd keep saving & get atleast the color & finishing done by a pro, that way it'll look top & you'll be grinning everytime you see it!

HTH

Tadaaaaaah!

Reasonably productive weekend. Could have done it quicker, but took my time and cleaned everything, made a few things black etc.

All thats left to do: [in a manner of speaking]
outer window scrapers.
front windscreen
front passenger seat
misc interior bits and bobs.

pics because they're awesome.

Stephen; tailgate is actually from stu's old mk 1. I wanted to use mine but it was bent from the crash. Glass was still good though, which I'm glad about cause it's got the sticker on it, from before it was cool too :P
you wouldn't believe all the differences between early and late model cars, till you either get them side by side, or build one of each, all these sublte little features.

Just have to pop in the windscreen, change the DS seat belt, put new WB and outer CV's in, and it should be ready for RWC. & reg. By this friday?? I doubt it, but it's good to have a goal. :D

Anyone know any places to get bumpers straightened properly? Mine are bent..for obvious reasons :duh:

14-04-2009, 02:49 PM
If they need to be rechromed it could be quite expensive as it's a 3 step process to get a good result. I guess it depends on how bent yours are.

I've got a badly bent but otherwise good rear chrome bumper that needs fixing but the cost put me off.

Jarred
14-04-2009, 03:30 PM
yea, I was thinking hot rod shop too.

It's not so much the chrome that needs to be re-done, but it'd be so nice if they were straight!

hot rod shop was pretty high on my list, I'll also have to look around, i'm sure there will be some place that does bumpers and chrome trims and etc.

Got the windscreen in today with James. took us a while, but we got it in the end. FYI start the cord ends from the middle top, works out easier that way. Also picked up some WB & other stuff. hopefully it'lll be nearly ready for RWC by the end of the weekend.

found my shifter and fixed the alignment, sort of. The wheels don't 'sqwabble' or 'wander' but the steering wheel is still off centre, even though the car is going [almost perfectly] straight. Do I need to take off the wheel and centre it, or is that a big no no?

I've only got adjust tie rod on one side...hmm..

I've bit the bullet, and booked her in for roadworthy on thursday morning. only 24 days left, so i'm kinda pushing it! wish me luck. :D

also, the deisels been a bit hard starting of late. I'm thikning glow plugs are going, as it needs two cranks to get going. & blows a big plume of smoke once it kicks over. Any way to test the plugs easily or something else I should look for? thanks deisel geeks! :D

check the glowplug fuse and the relay to see if uve got power. if yes, then im not sure of the correct way to test them but u can take them out and see if they heat up. once u take the bus bar off tho, you might as well replace them all as thats the toughest part of it all!!

I'm pretty sure it's the glow plugs, 2 or 3 probably. Hopefully I'll get around to changing them soon. We'll see.

Got my car back from roadworthy, with a nice short list.

1-Drivers seatbelt not retracting.
2-Spare tyre not secure.
3-Wiper assemb. worn.
4-Both wheels cyl's leaking [rear].
5-Windscreen washers not working.

Pretty easy list. For 2 I just have to remove the spare when I reshow it. For 1, I think I just have to remount part of the belt. 3, I already have brand new ones thanks for Dean @ VP. For 5, well just fill up the bottle!

5 I am a little worried about, since I've never played around with rear cyls before. Then again. I never knew how to paint before. or weld. I reckon I'll be ok. hopefully I'll be able to raid my 76er wreck for the appropriate parts!

I got it roadworthy today! The rear wheel assemblies off the 76'er were good enough to pass roadworthy, except then I had the brake warning light come on, which meant the couldn't pass it! Thankfully Andrew came to the rescue and it's fixed for now. The odo seems to have stopped working rencently, which almost cost me the roadworthy, but luckily cars pre 86 don't have to have a working odo, which is well, odd I geuss. most importantly it's past and now I can book it for rego! wooot!

one issue I need to get some ideas on.

Sounds like i've got a wheel bearing taht's being a bit tricky. Fronts are brand new, so I'm guessing rears are to blame.

symptoms: it's your basic whomp whomp whomp, and drone/hum. Goes away when turning right, or leaning left rather.

Solution? I'm geussing it's rear wheel bearings, I'm geussing that I'll be swapping bits over with the 76er and see how I go. or I've heard it could be tyres unevenly/badly worn. which they aren't. anything else cause this?

Just have to fix a few rattles in the dash vents & this whomp, and it's should be pretty right. Have to keep fiddling with the wheel alignment, something isn't hunky dory there.

oh yea, are GLD's prone to vibrating alot, esp through the steering wheel, just at idle?? anyone know what I mean?

Sounds like its your right rear wheel bearing for sure. Just change the bearing (not a huuuuuge job) or swap the whole hub assy over from the 2 door if you're lazy.

If you do replace the bearing, remember to pack it properly.

Basically what you do is put some bearing grease in the palm of your hand, get the bearing and scrape the side of the cage through the grease hard against your palm, pushing the grease up in between the cage and the inner race. Do this working your way around the bearing as you go, from both sides.

Make sense? :)

Dom, it's hard to see... accelerating is a bit of a tough one in a GLD rememeber...

Yeah there's two bearings. One at the front, one at the back. Even if it looks fine it's probably still knackered.

You need to take the cap off and take the split pin out, then undo the nut. The drum then comes out/off.

You'll need to knock the outer races out with a pin punch and a hammer, from the inside out. By that, i mean you have to push them out from the opposite side if you get what i'm trying to say. Make sure you tap it one side, then the other etc to keep it square as it comes out.

Once they're out, give the whole lot a good clean and bash the new races back in the same way. Don't worry about hurting the race hitting it back in.. You won't. :)

Then you need to pack the bearings as i've stated earlier. When you reassemble the whole lot, you want to put just a little bit of pre load on the bearings, enough to put just a little resistance on the drum when you rotate it.. So you want it to be "firm", not "tight".

Hope that helps.. :)

peedman

Stolen from danjreeds site, how to pack bearings:

http://faculty.ccp.edu/faculty/dreed/Campingart/jettatech/rearbrakes/TechTipsVol2Issue3.pdf

You can lube the drum up a bit with grease to help it when u put the races in :)

mollins
15-05-2009, 09:47 AM
well done mate.

your odometer will be easy to fix, just pull out the clocks and take the back off your speedo panel and there is a small worm gear set. I bet the driving gear for the odometer has slipped clear of the worm gear. You can just tap it back on and it will work.

If you wasnt a more permanent fix, maybe add a drop of superglue or something to keep it on there.

Bearings are easy, just take your time and don't tighten the nut too much. If you have a manual, read the procedure for checking the play in the bearing.

Top work :cool46:

I've fixed up a few things since last post. still have a bearing noise [only half as bad now]. looks like I"ll need to whack the inner bearing out as well and re pack that, or do a swapsy with the 76er even.

Fixed up the odo, well didn't fix it cause I couldnt' be bother, so I used the one outta my 76er as well.

Last "tank" [only 200 odd clicks] I got a fuel econ of 6.00L/100km. Which I was a tad disappointed with. It was a fair mix of driving though including heaving traffic, freeway, and a fair amount of sooting people :D

Something I need to do tomorrow, in prep for the road trip, is take a few spares and tools. Any one have any recommendations?

So far it's:
oil
water
spare hoses
fuses
tow rope
spare tyre
cable ties [of course]

anything I should add to that?

Cheers guys.

Glad it made the round trip OK.

What was the fuel consumption like?

Pete

Jarred
27-05-2009, 07:54 PM
Turns out the alt problem might be easier than first thought.

seems to be a missing bolt in there and hence a loose alt belt. :bluesbro:

fuel consumption was around 6.0L/100km. that's with 2 blokes, and a boot and back seat full of parts and luggage. and 4spd at 110kph. And also possibly a sticky thermostat.

It was about $120 bucks worth of juice for the weekend. and I got 1 comment when filling up " has this little thing got a diesel in it? who woulda thought"

I also have parts for you Pete. I'll catch you on the weekend if you're around.,

Jarred
01-06-2009, 08:47 PM
thought i'd quickly update this. she's been runnning like a trooper recently.

one of the lower alternator bolts fell out when coming back from sydders, which caused the alt not to charge the batt and the battery go flat and not power my lights and wipers; both of which are very handy at night. when it's raining.

Fitted up a 'cold air' intake and 'oil catch can' the other day aswell. Although i think i need to change the oil catch so it can't vent to atmosphere.

The 'cold air' intake just extends off the standard intake, just stop the air coming in straight off the engine. noticable improvement in smoothness whilst accelerating. better feel, even if there's no actually power increase.

Should also have a noticeable altitude drop soon toooo.:D

cheers Neil. I still havn't polished it completely yet,. you can tell in some of the pics.

I'm still having an issue with the batt/alt, as I ran out of electricity last night again. Had the lights on for maybe an hour, without the car on. Battery was at 11v.

I swapped batt's with Josh, so I could get home, and now my batt [after josh's alt charging it last night] is back up to 12.6ish v. When running, it's reading 13.6-7v, which would imply that the alternator is still working.

The accesory belt, is practically the same tightness [spelling] as on Joshs. I'm a bit stumped really, do I have an open circuit in my car somewhere perhaps? or are dead glow plugs sapping too much juice?

where should I start looking?

EDIT: 7:00pm, just checked the battery, 12.35v. Will check again tomorrow, see what's what.

if your multi meter has amps select 200 mamps
remove one battery lead conect multi meter to battery post and
the other lead to the lead
have everything off the multi meter should not read over .04 mamps
if it does remove one fuse at a time till you find the curcuit with a drain
hope that helps you Jarrad

i did this. multi meter initally read 1. [perhaps maybe as in overload for the 200mA setting.] Went through the fuses, [none are damaged] and pulled the 8th fuse [from the left] and then the reading went to zero. put the fuse back in and now the multi meter reads 0.00. did i just fix my first elctrical problem?!?

alternator is charging, quickly fired her up, and the voltage jumped to 13.5sh. So all is well in that respect.
