Well the time has come for one of my rocco's to be given a re birth...Managed to pick it up for $300 back in 2001...however it had to be stored up in Bindoon ( Brackie territory) for a few years..

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2006/10/79GLSe-1.jpg

The weather was really starting to get to the bodywork, so it has become a necessity to git er done NOW...

Had it trailered down early last week, then me and one of my sons began the task of stripping it down to a bare shell.

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2006/10/brocco106-1.jpg

http://http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p305/brownrocc/brocco114.jpg

The plan at present is to have it blasted early december ( the bare shell) still thinking about doing a caustic dip yet, may wait and see how much tin worm is residing on the underside yet...

I have some better front guards, NOS bonnet, good used doors and a decent hatch to fit from the parts collection..as pretty well all the bolt on panels have had the S**t kicked out of them...

There is some areas of rust, the worse so far being the rear of the roof where the hatch seal lives...:( perforation....

Still have'nt decided what powerplant / trans combo to fit yet, I have a few at hand...

Got a bit of work there Grant. Might as well put a crazy motor in there if you are gonna do a full rebuild.

The RTA have changed the rules in Sydney again, so that any engine other than the prefix that originally came with the car requires engineering. So even if you put a later 1.6 into a 1.6 Golf, you should get it engineered!

If the Scirocco is a private import it doesn't matter.

The engine pefix rule has been in for 30 years. Sometimes they stick to it and sometimes they don't.:???:

I think they have tightened it up. My blue slip guy wouldn`t register one recently for that reason, so I went elsewhere and they ended up loosing their blue slip licence! May not have been my fault, but may have been :?

The private import thing is interesting, My Mk2 rocco is a personal import and I wanna chuch the old 1.6 carby motor and stick in something more tasty, but I want to avoid engineering. I`m gonna do more research then.

Sorry to hijack your thread roccodingo

Yeah, needs a lot of work, but out of all the cars I have it requires the least...if u get my drift..

Engine choices are 1.8 T aww ( 150 HP), 1.8 16 V (KR), 1.8 8v (DX) or 2.0 8v (2E)

Trans choices are O2A, O2J, O2M ( 6 speed), O2O Close ratio or wide ratio.

for the minute thinking the KR and either the O2A or J cable shift. Will be looking at a seqishift selector..

got 280 front vented discs and a rear disc set up ...

well usually anything other than the same displacement or number of cylinders requires "engineering", but i have yet to get confirmation from the coppers here in the west.

Tell them VR6s were an option.

You can do that if it is a fresh import, but once it has been registered with an engine in NSW, I reckon you would have to engineer any changes.

Or get a number stamp kit ;)

How do they know what size engine a KR (eg) is? If it wasn't sold in Australia they don't know.

You can put any optional engine in.

I know a guy here in the ACT who recently registered a MK1 Rocco with a crazy injected 1.8KR (quad throttle boddies, aftermarket ECU, race buckets, fibreglass front end, more crazy stuff like that but I too lazy to type it) and he told the RTA that it came factory with a injected 1.8 (when they only ever came out with a 1.5) and they said, "...uh...OK" coz they are too dumb to know any better and there is no doco on Roccos that they can say is "Official" and its now registered and scares everything else off the road. Ha hah.

But they did come out with 1.8s (and 1.6s).

I think most if not all Mk1 roccos were 1.6 or less syncro. The changeover year for Scirocco Mk1 - 2 is 1981 and I reckon they save the 1.8 for the updated cars.

Go the 1.8T for sure!!!
I would've done that conversion if it wasn't for the cost of them!!!

For my transplant, all i required was a receipt for the motor, and I.D, and my rego went from 2E to ABF...

How original are you making the rocco?
Daily drivable or more show car style???

30-10-2006, 07:53 AM
Yeh, you're right Matt, the 1,8 came out in the '82 model. Largest engine in the Scirocco 1 was 1,7. But the RTA wouldn't know the difference.

The car will be finished with blacked out trim ( ala US 'S' style) instead of the chrome, paint will be same as the test painted guard in the image below.

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2006/10/brocco116-1.jpg

Main purpose of the car will be as a regular driver and to have some low level motoring event fun in...

Spent Sunday stripping out the rest of the interior, wiring, carpet, sound deadening etc, floor was in reasonable shape in respect to panel damage, and in good shape with little rust inside..

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2006/10/brocco123-1.jpg

Hopefully will get the engine out early this week, then to fab up a rotisserie and get into the underside...

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2006/10/brocco126-1.jpg

Was suprised at the lack of rot around the front screen frame...excepting the wiper motor hole...

Well not much happened over the weekend, Kids to cart around, house to clean not to mention working Saturday...

However did manage to remove the engine and the pesky front guard that had been "welded" on ... thanks previous owner...

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2006/11/brocco134-1.jpg

Will need to do some work with the front panel to get it upto an acceptable standard..

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2006/11/brocco139-1.jpg

Still have the exhaust system to remove yet, "all welded from the downpipe to the tailpipe..." good stuff exhaust fitter...

managed a bit more of the dissasembly process today..

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2006/11/brocco143-1.jpg

crapped out shock bolts required use of the grinder + cut off wheel..

Once the rear axle was out of the way, the fully welded exhaust could then be removed from the scene...

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2006/11/brocco145-1.jpg

with the gear shift linkage, steering rack all removed, it's now a bare shell...

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2006/11/brocco149-1.jpg

So just converting the rotisserie drawings to metricated steel sizes, then I will fab up that contraption...

Mk 2 rocco's are quite common on the ground, managed to chat to a guy at one of the breakers who just bought one for a daily driver, paid like 150 quid ( $400 ) for a good runner .. hence why the rough ones get broken so quickly...

Andy won the gold rocco of fleabay.uk, paid about 1300 pounds for it ( ~$3300 AUD )..

and yes its abysmal as to what goes to the breakers over there...saw an A4 Audi that was driven in in very good condition, only to be thrown on the pile...one of many cars that terminate early..not all VW's by any means either...

Andy is a bit of a MK1 hoarder unlike myself...:D the red Mk2 was a daily up til the point of the gold Mk1 arriving, tried to sell it but there worth nothing ( as most 10+ year old cars in UK are..), hence why i have first dibs on just about the whole car...;)
some of the council laws over there allow them to collect cars that LOOK like they have been abandoned..there is a scirocco register member who had his car removed this way, still with thousands of pounds of new parts fitted.
Unsure of how it has turned out for the unfortunate fella..but i guess thats the danger of having to work on the street/verge...

Well done some research on Caustic dipping and Abrasive blasting...

The plan at present is to chop the rust areas and repair as required, abrasive blast the rusty sections where necessary, then Caustic dip to remove all the seam sealer and underbody protection that I cant remove by mechanical means...

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2007/03/brocco183-2.jpg

Used 30 Kg's of dry ice to chill all the floor interior sound deadening, then light hammer blows to fracture the frozen bitumen material...

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2007/03/brocco184-2.jpg

Came up pretty well considering... You can see where one sheet had de- bonded and allowed water to sit between the sheet and metal floor...

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2007/03/brocco181-2.jpg

Threw some of the Ice into the rain tray to remove the underbody seal, had been a problem in one of the other rocco's ( rain leaking in on the fuse box ...) so will need a light blast around the wiper motor bracket...

Sourcing the repair sections is taking way to long, have had a few dud leads, however have located another car at a breakers in UK, awaiting confirmation that its available...

Project has been in a holding pattern mainly due to the lack of replacement panels and ongoing business commitments .

The front inner fender NOS item I have purchased is now in LA awaiting shipping to Perth, should be leaving in the next fortnight, then only a 2 month wait till it arrives.

The other salvaged panels from Dr Dan's stolen rocco ( in UK) are currently on the water, should be here in about 5 weeks time. Managed to purchase another factory black leather interior from him also ( minus the front seats  ), so that will come in handy !!

Well time has been sadly lacking of late, The US parts are here and still going thru customs clearancing as I write this. Hopefully this time i will collect them and they wont be damaged by the morons employed down there.

Off to UK next month for a social visit and some parts collecting, then when back I have about 4 weeks work booked up already ( and i have'nt left yet !!)

Come xmas I need to get the cabrio repairs completed and the new hood fitted, hopefully then i can spend some time on this project, wanting to have the shell work done over summer to give the paint a good dry out before winter arrives.

Hahaha... kinda.

Another scirocco 1 running lives outside, plus a cabriolet in the garage ( running ) and another Golf Mk1 outside ( Russells track car) plus Radfords Mk1 cabrio under repair + 2 more cars not here that are in need of work. when I get time to spend on mine I do ...;)
