A few of us went out to the local race track (Baskerville) for a bit of a squirt today :) Dom has some great in car video footage as a passenger in Benny's Mk2 GTI and my Mk1 20vt  The little orange beast did the rounds, with Ed C letting everyone have a turn behind the wheel throughout the day.

Here is a small selection of pics

The line up:
James: Mk3 2 door VR6
Ed C: Orange Mk1
Benny: Black Mk2 GTI
Dom: Beige Mk1
Me: Silver Mk1 GTI 20vt (no pics as I was driving it) ;)

Ed C and I have been round Baskerville millions of times, but for Benny, Dom and James, it was thier first time......they picked it up pretty quickly, too :driver: Now that they are all signed up with the Hobart Sporting Car Club, we'll have to organise another outing soon after Christmas :)

Look's like you all had an awesome day at the track.

Would've loved to get my car down on Baskerville, but due to a change of plan's, I was stuck with Symmond's Plains.

Thanks for sharing the pic's fella's.

How much does it cost to run your car on the track down there?

Yeah...I'd much prefer Baskerville for a bit of a blat.....suits the little Golf, too:) It's pretty cheap to use the track down here! If you are not already a member of a car club, it's $60 annual membership and then $60 every time you want to use the track  So for the guys who joined up yesterday, only $60 next time ;)

There were quite a few out there yesterday! One group of guys had a track day comp where they have to go and and buy a car for $1000 and then they have a $1000 spending limit to get it track ready  The silver Volvo 240 running around was a classic :driver:

Looks like a great day was had by all. Well done. The weather was kind and I imagine the grip levels would have been good too.
I plan to get to the next one, if there is one and I reckon I can organise a few of my late model customers to come along too.

So many memories....

great to see that the ol' track is still in good condition. I can't remember what times I used to get in my Datto 1600 (half a P510)...but would be keen to know what times you guys are doing.

My best time at the Plains was (I think) 1' 30" something...

Standing 1/4's were mid 15's

Yay! Was a great day, and Much fun had by all.
Like Mike said, it was my first time (in a car) on a track, and I can't wait for next time. I have done a few laps around "the plains" on a bike...But i have to say with baskerville a newbie has to be really thinking about what they are doing...lol
Antdragonist (Dom) should have some more pics and vids up soon....
Thanks for a great day ppl

As it was my 1st time on the track i dont think my times were all to be desired, but that didnt worry me in the least!!

Although Ed did take my car around for a squirt and i timed him in one lap where he was not giving full stick recorded a 1:15. we thought if he gave it to her that might be brought down to a 1:10. who knows!

Not bad seeing it was running street tires at normal pressure, street fuel and very factory brakes :)

i have a family member who races HQ's around and said his best is a 1:06. i know they are an old clunker but the thing is fully. . . and i mean fully race set up! go figure.

be so scary what a race tuned vr6 would do :biggrin:

p.s. i love Germans haha!!

Ha-ha....you're being a bit harsh on the blue beast.....that was his cool down lap, Ricey

It's all about set-up around Baskerville and maintaining a smooth consistent lap....especially in a car without huge pull. My little Cyborg RS (Mirage Cup Car) went round Basky in 61.7, which for a 1600 MIVEC, was a pretty quick time  Sensational little package, though!

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2008/11/Mirage-2.jpg

From riding in the silver beast compared to the other cars out there, you'd have to agree that it's hard to keep it smooth and consistent with so much grunt and a road set-up ;) I'm sure Dom's footage would show this if he can get it loaded :) For having a bit of fun on a private practice day, you just want a bit of a compromise.....don't want to stuff around with your road set-up too much, James ;)

Would have been quicker than that I would have thought, FJ Steve :???:

My old big fat and heavy MK4 GTI went round Symmons in 73/74 from memory....and they don't perform by any stretch :wasntme: ;)

Mike...we are talking of the mid - late '70's :duh: (memory is not THE best)

Set up for the Datto was:
1970
1600cc, twin 1.75"" SU carbies
Monroe "air" shocks (rear)
datto 1200 diff (didn't find out about that until I was selling the beast)
Aunger 16 x 5.5JJ "Hotwire" mags
Kleber V12 low profile rubber

I always had great tussles with comparitive lap times with Benny Parsons
(1973 HQ 4 dr 202 column shift)...Benny was Motoring writer for the Advocate at the time. Maybe I have the lap times wrong....happy to have them altered:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

Not the best footage (not sure what happened at the end), but Benny managed to put together a litle vid of Dom's beige Mk1 and my silver Mk1 out at Baskerville ;)

240 ponies under the hood sure makes for a big arm workout
