Thats so badass. These cars are rapid anyway, but that just looks the nuts. I went in a LHD German one of these when they were not even released in Uk and it was georgeous. Blue Dials, Leather Seats and caned off all the boy racers without even trying.

W8 cluster(instruments I assume), does the 8 cylinder tach work with the 4 or 6 cylinder engine or is it a VW option that is in appearance only?

Hi Guys,

I would like to purchase a 1998 passat, however, I'm not sure normally how much it will cost to service as well as the price of the some parts..Eg, timing belt, brake pads...etc.. If any passat folks has some ideas or experiences to change parts, could you please......provide the price of it?....

thanks very much in advance.....

I think he means the interior light cluster , its a common mod in the US .
There is no way an instrument cluster could be swapped since the clusters are now coded with Vin numbers

Hi ming,

The passat costs no more to service that any other VW/Audi, most of the parts are the same. If you are looking at cars for sale, the most common problems to look for are:
1. Water leaks from the windscreen: check that the front carpets are not damp
2. Front ball joints: the passat has the same multi-link setup as the audi A4. Try shaking the front wheels and driving over some speed humps at different angles to see if there are any clonking noises. The joins are easy to replace.

The passat is a good solid car - I have a 99 wagon and am very happy with it!

There is also a huge amount of passat specific information at http://www.passatworld.com It's mostly american and european, but useful anyhow.

Cheers, Peter

There is nothing wrong with lower ball joints ???
There is a re-call on these lower ball joints , dont know why never seen any fail .

bigger issues with tie rod ends (recall on these only early Passats)
control arms wear out and start knocking

Water leaks ? Ive only seen a few VW's leak water , generally its from the plug connection point where the engine ecu is and also near the pollen filter on the other side .

Recalls on these include tie rod ends , immobilizer activating when interior of temperature of vehicle exceeds 45 degrees c and lately the lower control arm

Another service campaign includes the turbo oil feed pipe heatshield . The early Passats use to blow turbos constantly due to the pipe running so close to the catalytic converter .

There are heaps more things to look out for .PM me if you want individual details
