View Full Version : Oil Question

Approx 1 month after purchasing my GT TSI I noticed the oil was approx 1/2 way down the dipstick and went to the dealer to have it topped up and bought 1lt of Castrol longlife III 5w-30 (synthetic) from them.
After just having my first service I noted on the invoice that they have used Mobil Super S 10w-40 (semi synthetic).

After questioning this apparently the engines come from the factory with the Castrol but depending on what deal they do at the time with the oil distributors. Obviously the Semi synthetic meets the required criteria of VW 505 however is this a case of supplying a the cheapest product to mee the minimum standard? Also, does anyone supply their own oil or specify what oil they want used during servicing?

I'd prefer a full synthetic and plan on changing at 7500km intervals or am I worrying too much about it? I plan on keeping the car for 5 years/100,000km but also want it to be in good condition at time of sale (as have my previous cars).

Any advice appreciated

Paul

Oh boy. This topic gets debated on ALL makes of car forums, at least the brands I've been associaed with over the last several years.

In the end, it does seem, that whatever 200L drum is open at the time, is what you get. More of a concern to us PD / DPF dieselers than you twin charge types, but scary all the same.

My brother is a mechanic by trade, and confirms this fact for the "general" cars. Personally I'd assume VW is a bit more particular about it than say Ford and Holden.

There is a discussion in this forum (MK5 Golf) which is worth checking out.

I have a list of all the current approved oils on my website here

http://my-gti.com/7/volkswagen-oils-50400-and-50700

I use a 504.00/507.00 oil in my car, I was going to use the Mobil 1 ESP but it's only available in 20 litre and 200+ litre drums in Australia so it was going to be a pain to use. Fortunately my dealer Highway Auto used a 504.00/507.00 Castrol oil standard so I let them supply the oil. Most of the dealers it seems use the older standards (502.00).

All the 504.00/507.00 are full synthetic oils whereas 502.00 can be semi synthetic.

I only use VW 504.00/507.00 approved oils in both my 2.0 TFSI and my 2.5 TDI, and I suggest to others that they should also.

I got mine topped up and 3L in an old oil container for nothing... Bit jipped if they made you buy it!

Yeah, thought it might be a stick topic. Pretty certain I will provide my own oil for future servicing, keep it the same product and then at least have the same product for top ups. I'll check again the correct grade for the 1.4 TSI, pretty sure it's 504 (507 for diesel).

Thanks for your replies
