my tip is to take it carefully with the clips on the fuel lines. The have a tap to push in to release them from the filter.
I replace them at 60000 kms.

About every 2 years or 30k km a fuel filter should be changed.

Every 60k is the VW scheduled time, everyone has a preference. having said that EVERY one i have changed at 60k has really needed it and i wouldnt like to see them on there any longer. Mate just watch for any residual pressure in the lines when you take them off.

After our fuel was analysed by VW Germany a few years back they recommended changing the fuel filter every 30k km . Back when the first mk4 was released it was 30k , it wasnt until 1999 that the new schedule came out and it was changed to 60k km . Fuel filter will last for a loooonnnnggggg time , but its filtering efficiency will drop off the longer you leave it in the car !

ok in this step.

Open door let fuel pump prime fuel line, then remove fuel pump relay. Open petrol cap and release pressure.

Then remove clips from both sides of fuel filter. Have a bucket or catch can handy for excess petrol. Remove bracket from fuel filter pull old filter out.
Put new filter in the right way around. But bracket back on connect either side of fuel filter make sure front hose is connected back on all the way till it pushes up against fuel filter. Tighten everything, re install fuel pump relay.

Open and close door about 3 times, start car. Let it idle for around 3-4 Minutes. Then take a very gentle drive for around 1km and then you are back in business as per usual.

Hope this helps.
