Yeah we went last august, its the guts of a 1000 miles drive from home(ireland) but it was worth it,although im guessing by australian standards a 1,000 mile drive is not much.i hope to get back there next year - i fell in love with the place! petrolhead heaven.

Nice one!
The concept of driving a car registered in one coutnry through multiple countrys still boggles my mind. Imagine seeing someone cruising along Pitt St on NZ plates.

Cars registered in foreign countries are pretty common on irish roads,in fact sometimes the nicest cars you see are foreign ones.
On the other hand the thought of going abroad and driving arented car through so many countries doesn't appeal to me,i was back in my home town sitting at the lights thinking only a few days previous i was 2700m above sea level in the swiss alps over 1000 miles away there is something cool about that.

^ That is seriously cool. I feel so remote down here, it would be wild to be so close to the rest of the world (Europe), and be able to drive around as you want.
Are there any restrictions/taxes or anything that might discourage people or make people pay extra for taking their cars out of the country and driving on a foreign registration?

Looks like fun!
1000 miles, would be about Melbourne to sydney and back! (i think) That's a fair trip in anyones standard!.
I'd love to drive around europe one day. Would be a hoot. Visit 4 Countries on one day without even trying!

The entire european road trip was in fact 3,111 miles we visited
England
France
Belgium
Holland
Germany
Czech republic
Austria
Switzerland
Italy
There are very few restrictions we were only asked for passports 4 times, twice at the eurotunnel (tunnel between england and france) once at the border of germany/czech republic and once at the italian/swiss border.
There are no taxes at all apart from petrol and beer lol!

That is a road I have always wanted to drive on!!! Makes the Blue Mountains where I'm from look tiny!!
You have to love the good old mates road trip. I would love to have the ability to have other countries so close. I really love driving, so distance dose not bother me at all.
I have done the run between Sydney and Darwin 3 times(3800km), and each time took 3 days by myself, and I have done Darwin to Townsville(2500km) in two days.
I used to do the Puckapunyal(95km north of Melbourne on the Hume Hwy) to my oldies place in Emu Plains(55km west of Sydney), and that was 807km door step to door step, and mates and I would do that on weekends(drive up Friday night, drive home Sunday night).
