Prices of these have dropped recently. That was a 10-12k car 6 months ago.

Check the wishbone links in the front suspension, ac, power steer and all the electronics.

Wheels and interior can be changed easily if the rest is solid.

Manual is the GO, I`d avoid the auto.

I have a 1999 A4 1.8TQ Wagon and its the shizzle.

My missz has the passat B5 1.8t in auto and i HATE driving it!!
crappy gear changes, never enough power when you need it and clunk clunk every gear change - and thats AFTER a full rebuild!!

whats the service history and books like?

when is the timing belt due for replacement next (should have been done around 80,000 so another one due soon? that will set you back around $1500 (i think!)

Cam belt is 90k or 4yrs. With the belt you have to replace idlers , tensioner roller, hydraulic dampner. B5 doesnt run the water pump but im 110% sure the small belt that runs the water pump will be stuffed, they always miss this when servicing. There is a little gap where you can check it. You wont get much change out of $700-800 and thats with labour. Some places will be heaps dearer.B6 on the other hand has a very similar engine but has EGR. The water pump on that beast is toothed belt driven.
As most cars do there is a list of things to watch for.
Cv joints clicking
Lower control arm ball joints
Upper link arms bushes and ball joints
Air conditioning - must be cold and operate correctly with no noise. Evaporators and belt idlers common failures.
Ign switches - cause all sorts of dramas if missed
Steering rack seals squeeze the bellows to check if they have fluid in.
Porous oil coolers and leaky cooler pipes
Coolant flanges
On auto watch the radiators they have the tranny oil cooler. They split and fill the tranny with coolant. Mainly keep an eye on the coolant level and you will be right. If you are losing coolant and dont know where its going have a think about how the trans gear changes are. The coolant breaks down the glue on the clutches.
This might be a meat list but not bad really and most parts are available OEM. AC is the dearest parts and must be repaired correctly or a repeat failure will be a given
Hope some of this helps
