I was wondering what a good exhaust system and intercooler size would be for a A3 '98 turbo.

What other mods have you done to the car? This will greatly impact your needs.

If you are keeping the std turbo or maybe fitting a K03S a 2.75 inch turbo back system would be plenty. The std exhaust is pretty reasonable in the flow dept, if you want a quiet system. A bigger downpipe/cat makes a good difference in the spool of the turbo.

An intercooler upgrade can be bit more complicated as I am not aware of on off the shelf one for the A3.

I have one on mine but that was custom made and involved cutting a good lump out of the front bar. I also cut out the number plate recess and moved the plate over.

Forge do an upgrade for the std sidemount for a Golf and I bet that would be plenty good enough.

I would also look for a new turbo inlet pipe, the std one is pretty restrictive. There is also a squished pipe in the drivers wheel arch that impedes flow too. There are larger diameter pipes for that as well.

Personally, I'd recommend the downpipe/cat, TIP and software for your ECU.
