I know it's off topic  but the Golf TDI does ~ 1800rpm @ 100kph in 6th and ~ 2000rpm @ 110kph. The turbo isn't really on boost until 1750rpm so you have to drop a gear to get any oomph....

Similar to a MK4 GTI, mine does about 3k at 110 and 2700ish at 100kph.

Cool thanks for that. Just for Ships and giggles i test drove the Suzuki Swift Sport. :-( It sat around the 3500 when at 100. Boy that car sucked.

The funny thing was half way through the drive she asked me what i like more about the swift than the polo and the car was silent......... I just couldnt think of anything. Honestly unless there was some very very good reason why you needed a 5 door hatch you would have to be crazy to buy it.

Umm. With the golf GTI you don't have a choice........5 door or nothing!

I am driving the 81 GLI cabrio while my GTI is having a touch up at the moment. At 100 km/h its doing 2,400 RPM in 5th gear. Not much above idle. Definately worth fitting a 5 speed to mk 1s. :)

I was told by a salesman that 200 limited 3door golf GTI's coming late in the year.
Whoroo.

Well gtigrl I have done a lot of driving in my day [ started when I was 7 & went thru 8 cars before I had a license & later had semi-trailers ] I found that I wasn't doing the speed what the speedo said. I had it checked & found it to be 9% over read. Asked VW Aust & they said that they allow 10%, I told them that after some tyre wear that it would be, THEY would not me answer on this point.
Whoroo.

Yeah not that the road side speed checks are accurate but one I have been through registered my 100k at 92k..

Just used a GPS to check mine and with the speedo reading 100kph the GPS was saying 93! To do 110 as per the GPS I need a speedo reading of a 119!

I read somewhere (Old Timers' Disease has betrayed me where) that all Mk 5 Golf speedos read slightly fast. I've noticed that when I'm cruising @ 110kph on Bass Hwy the MFD tells me 110, the speedo tells me 110 but other cars (and even trucks  ) still pass me. This really p*sses me off as I 've got just so much torque under my right foot at 1900rpm with the turbo on boost and I could leave them all for dead.

I believe it is all part of VWs road safety initiative, making the speedos read low.

I always do 10% over everywhere, which is probably about right.

Or put bigger wheels on ;)

I forgot to mention that when I had the speedo checked it was done with a professional [costing me $30] using a GPS & got it in writing for VW. Your figures of 100k's & the road side check saying 92k's is the same as the GPS used in my car, which = 9% over-read.
Whoroo.

With no children, the 2 door thing is cool. I've been there and done that. I've got to say that once children entered the equasion there is no question for me about how much easier the 5 door is to live with. Even if the Golf was available in 2 door hatch, I'd personally still go for the 5 door.

I quite agree with Dr Spine, I always had 2 doors starting with beetles and then golfs but once you have had a 4 dr you find them a hell of a lot easier to live with when it comes to lugging extra people around. Easier to clean in the back too. Not caning 2 doors, I still have a few!!
2 doors look sportier though.....:)

Hoihoi.
My last car for 5 yrs was 3 doors & only ever had anyone in the back once. The wife's car has the 4 doors & tow bar, but not my little girl, anyway 2's easier to clean.
