Hello Motorsport Fans,

After a picture perfect day of European motorsport action at the only circuit in Australia with a bridge you get to blast under, then over, the Liqui Molly / Meguiar’s Oran Park Gran Prix Event Report is here.

After a weekend of winter rains and icy winds, the heavens parted over Sydney with nothing but crystal clear blue sky over Oran Park for one of the biggest and best events on the calendar – The Oran Park Gran Prix Sponsored by Liqui Molly and Meguiar’s.

With a Monday event keeping a number of VAG Motorsport Superstars chained to an office desk, quite a few new individuals (a whole garage block of VW’s actually) racked up some much needed series points and had a clean shot at the prize pool…well almost. There also was a strong VW spectator and support base present…not so many Audi people though – The VW team is definitely taking over this event series =P

With the absence of David ‘Ratty’ Appleby and Massimo Bamonte – two incredibly fast VAG MS Competitors – Nick ‘low flying’ Strange in the Nurburgring Class had the circuit almost to himself setting blistering, unmatched times from the first session with Quang Tran hot on his heels in an Audi RS4. Unfortunately for Quang, there’s quick, and then there’s Nick…what do they put in those little VW’s? Congratulation Nick – Oran Park GP Circuit Breaker with a time of 1:25:5450!

Nick flew around the circuit so fast that his tyres eventually failed…to say Nick was pushing ten tenths would be an understatement. Playing it safe, Nick retired early, a clear 2 seconds in front of the field, however, Quang pushed on with a clean circuit to claim first prize by just two points! I know, I fell off my chair after I saw the results too.

The year long battle between Stu Low (VW GTI) and Ian Cudmore (VW R32) in the Ubersport Class looked all but over with Ian holding top spot in each session until a small mechanical issue brought his day to a close…there is always Wakefield Park Champion. Darko Superovic rounded off the category consistently becoming faster as the day progressed dropping almost 3 seconds from the first session…keep an eye out for him at Wakefield also.

New to the series in a VW Golf Gti, Jim Hikalis put in a strong effort in hunting down Marc Hammond’s Audi A4 in the Autobahn Class, and after a mechanical issue began to add seconds to Marc’s lap times, the tables began to turn…but just not enough. On the plus side for Jim, Marc is exempt from collecting prizes so get your entry form in quick to secure your Meguiar’s / Liqui Molly prize pack.

Paul ‘Floody’ Flood returned to the circuit with a set of borrowed semi slicks to set the Ingolstadt Class on fire with a 1:29:9480 in a VW Polo! That time is faster then some times recorded in other categories…this time also earned him Fastest FWD Driver for the second time in a row – Congratulation Paul. Simon Spain, a new VAG MS competitor also in a VW Polo Gti, didn’t make it easy for him though and was continually in Paul’s revision mirror, headlights blazzing the entire day – and looking at the results, would have actually tied with Paul if completed another session…close indeed.

With only one more round to go at Wakefield Park competition, is definitely looking hotter than a melted semi slick…make sure you mark the next event and the Trackside Party in you calendar.

Special Tanks to Narada, Tim, Daniel, Ivan and the team from Circuit Club, Natsoft (timing), Mark from Liqui Molly (Main Event Sponsor), Oran Park Staff and especially the Ian Luff Motivation / Driving Australia Team for an excellent day of high octane European excitement.

lol I think my win is in the bag ... hasn't been hard though, I think I'm the only Polo GTI to do more then 1 round. I just need to turn up, remove my back seats again and do a few sessions
