My 01golf gti has started to shudder really badly when the breaks are applied. You can feel it coming through both the pedal and the steering wheel. At its worst when you have been breaking and hit about 60-70 klm Any help would be very greatly appreciated. Cheers

It may need new front disc brake rotors.

Sounds like your front brake discs are warped. Looks like its time for new brakes pads and either getting your discs machined or replacing them all together. Machining only costs about $30 to $40 each, but it depends on how worn they are, and whether they can be machined without going past the minimum thickness.
If you need to get new discs, don't go through VW, you will pay too much. DBA and RDA do brake discs for the MK4 Golf, and are alot cheaper, but may last a bit longer. And you will need new brake pads too after doing all of this, as the old pads will have bedded to the old discs, and you won't have the same braking efficacy.

As above, a disc machining will sort it out aslong as there is enough meat on the discs.

Are there machines/processes now that can safely machine slotted discs?

Cheers guys! My disc are drilled, will there be any issue like dubbed mentioned for slotted discs? As im a newbie to VW's, is it very tricky to remove the discs?

i've got the same symptoms when i slam on the brakes - with ESP turned on.
Then turned off i dont get the shuddering, but i skid.

It's always been like this so i assume thats the way its ment to be.

That sounds like ABS!

Be careful if your going down the machining road, especially on all German car's with soft disc's.

They will machine up ok & will last for alittle while, but where it was warped, they tend to also get hotspot's right through the material, which leads to the shudder coming back over time

If you just machine or replace the disc's, the pad's also develop hot spot's them & the result will be the same over time

My advice. Replace the pad's & disc's.

He speaks the truth. When i was working at VW we never machined discs and as far as i can remember, VW actually specifies no machining of discs.

I've started to have this problem as well.. Just after I got new brakes!

Have to take them back.. It's gotten better at lower speeds but it's really bad at higher speeds (70km/h +)

Definately rotors then. I priced them from supercheap today, and it seems a bit steep to me! (and i'm not even sure what model rotors are for mk4 2L... there's a different listing for american 2L Vs. mk4 from 98-01... confusing much?

Either way, standard DBA rotors are about the $90 mark each, give or take $5; slotted are a joke at about $210 each, or x-drilled for $250! Prices for slotted or drilled seem a bit bloody steep to me!

Well mine are OEM..

Can't wait until the problem is fixed though, it'll be like a new car then.

Durid rear brake pads - $86.70
Zimmerman rear disc rotor - $121.00

$415.40 all up!

drives well.

A little off topic here, but can the R32 rotors etc be fitted to a standard Golf, or is it not worth the hassles?

I don't think the extra braking would be worth the expense. You would be into a set of 16 inch wheels, if not 17s just to go over the discs. You'd have the cost of the discs, pads, brackets and possibly the calipers too.

I reckon the std 288mm brakes are adequate for the car in std form.

I'm pretty sure the Audi TT brake rotors will fit without significant changes.

Hi all,

A few weeks ago my brakes started to shudder and vibrate up through the brake pedal and steering wheel as well...great I thought, rotors machined/replaced and pads too.....and the pads show little or no wear. :duh:

Then a funny thing happened...it rained.

I drove around in the rain for a couple of days and since then the shudder/vibration has almost gone...certainly gone enough for me to not consider doing anything with it just yet.

I am wondering if driving around in the rain could have cleaned/dedusted a lot of the braking components / abs sensors etc?

Could the shuddering have been caused by a build up of brake dust / glazing of the pads or something else?

I could have sworn it needed the brakes doing...now I'm not so sure.......:???:

Has anyone else come across this before?

Need 17s minimum, potentially 18s.

322mm fronts are a pretty beefy upgrade over the 288mm stock setup.

Actually they're a 334mm rotor and I don't think I've ever seen them fit under a 17" rim. I know people have had issues with certain 18" designs that won't fit over the brakes. Also if you have a puncture you will need either the same rim or an Audi 8L S3 space saver which will only fit over the rear brakes and not the fronts.
Yes you will also need the full setup with Calipers as well as rotors and pads. None of which are cheap. From VW Australia you're looking at $500+ per front rotor and over $300 for a set of front pads. No idea on the cost of the calipers.
When the dollar was much better I got both rotors delivered from the US for less than $500 and EBC red stuff pads front and rear for about $300 from memory. Slotting the front rotors cost me about $100 locally.
Cheers,
Trent

Hmmm, I've been told (I'll have to confirm, since I have 17s coming) that the OEM 17" Bora Sport V6 4Motion wheels will fit over the R32 brakes. I believe the rears on the R32 are the same as the rears on my Bora V6 4Motion too.

I'll have to get all this confirmed!

Yeah I'm not 100% sure on it there mate, DUB20V has some knowledge about it as well due to him having that setup before he went to the Porsche brakes. Might be worth giving him a PM. The rears are definitely a lot smaller and will have no issues at all.
