after spending $1000.00 at my local sh**house mechanic, he gave me the car back with a new coolant temp sensor, however he tells me that the reason my 02 GTI is running bad is due to a faulty turbo boost sensor. He says that one is causing a fault in the other, and that there are no turbo pressure switches available in australia??????
Sound right?
anyone else had this problem, is it still ok to drive????
any help appreciated

What's he mean by the "Turbo Pressure switch"? I think he must mean the N75 valve (Wastegate Regulator). I find it hard to believe there's none available in Australia , have you checked with a VW dealer? Audi dealers would also carry the same part I'd guess. If he doesn't know the correct name for it you probably should find a VW mechanic.

There has to be a specialist nearby that can give you a better diagnosis. Or someone with VAG-COM.
If you get the fault code and check with google what it means, you'll be more than half way to making your car work again.
If the car starts and drives, even slowly, then I would say it's ok to drive. I wouldn't go far though until you get to the bottom of things.

MKIV GTI's don't have a boost sensor - no wonder its playing up!
I Would be inclined to get it to Volkspower in Burwood (no idea how far from you they are) - they are well versed in turbo VW's

Yes they do well the later ones do anyway :
038 906 051 Thrust sensor retails for $291.35+
Ive also heard it being called the MAP sensor for the car .

The poster said "faulty turbo boost sensor" in an 02' GTI - and clearly - they don't have one.
If you spend the time to read the post correctly you would have seen that - or do you suggest the poster just runs out & buys a thrust sensor first for $291.35+?

Its also located at the top of the intercooler .
Or maybe I was dreaming when I changed the last one ????

i thought that none of the aussie mk4 gti's had the map sensor on the intercooler wich is why they make blanking plates for them, so if you get a eurojet fmic or smic we can black the whole where the sensor goes..... could be wrong has happened once...:nana:

Im guessing that cars which have ecu ending with BB wont have it , and the 99 gti is the main model that has this ecu , ive seen a few 2000 models as well , most of the rest of them end with CH , and I think thats the ones that have the boost sensor , but Im only speculating based on what Ive seen

CH does not have a boost sensor, we have an in house test car that is a CH - its the same as the BB, you can interchange ECU's.
They all have the AGU engine code - none have a boost sensor.

Guys hope i can clarify , it is a thrust sensor( well thats dubs wording) thats what its called but can also be interpreted as a MAP sensor or Boost Pressure sensor. My Dad was lloking for one of these and bought one from the states 038906051B

Hate to bring this thread back from the dead, but I happened to have the front off my car the other day and in looking at the job to remove the current SMIC, I noticed that while I had the MAP sensor there, it wasn’t plugged into anything!
Just wondering if anyone else has seen this? Fuzion, you took some photo’s of yours, was yours already disconnected?
