I have had my VW GTI 2000 model for sometime now.

I have recently noticed a vibration in 5th gear

Especially between 50kms to 90Kms

All other gears seem to be ok.

Gearing up or down there is no issue.

I have asked around and no one seems to have come across this problem before.

Some clear facts would be greatly appreciated.

Can you feel it in the steering wheel? Does it go away if you dip the clutch and coast?

Put your location and maybe we can recommend a local specialist.

Just FYI you shouldn't be using 5th gear in general day to day driving on the vast majority of 5 speed gearboxes as it is simply a light overdrive gear typically for use at higher speeds where the speed is likely to be constant.

Its not usually mentioned in the manual - they usually only suggest gearchanges at certain speeds.

Makes me worry about the DSG in my GTI but it will always flick down a gear a soon as a bit of load gets onto it.

what specifically is wrong with using 5th gear around town? i'm just wondering because i often cruise around in 5th at low speed (say 60km/h) to save fuel, i downshift to accelerate however. i never realised this was bad for the transmission?
