Don't know my way around Melbourne at all so I ended up following gtigrl. Ended up in a little alley and I ended up buying 8 of these BBS CH wheels. Little bit more offset than the standards and will end up a lot more difficult to clean, Buggered if I know how you can find all those little alleyways girl! Thanks very much for getting me there. Your turn next to buy some wheels for the polo now!

Yeah, 17s. I would have liked 18s but the budget wouldn't tretch that far. And yes, the tyres copped the biggest caning on sunday at Sandown,(see GTI day report) but they held up pretty well. The instucyor was wizzing up the back straight at around 180/190 km/h and pitching it into the left hand sweeper without braking. Felt fantastic and I am surprised to have any tyres left with the amount of laps it did like that with passengers. Ask gtigrl, she was in the back at one stage. 18s do look great, eventually I will lower the thing and it will look better. Not sure whether to sell the other wheels or stick a set of Advans on them for special days?..... Cheers, Andrew:)

I fantasize about the day when I get a new beastie, GTI, R32 Porsche 911 Turbo(Dreamer, nothing but a Dreamer{thanks to Supertramp}) when I can slot on each corner a set of mesh BBS's. By putting BBS's on your GTI has taken it to a whole other level. I suppose I could consider some 2nd handers for the Passat, but I want to get some mechanical stuff done first.

Hey Vanderliker, one day you too will get a great car, I am sure. I managed to buy a 12 month old mk1 Golf when I was 21. I felt special to have such a new car back then! (showing the age thing again!) My first new car was my mk4 1.6 in 2001. It took that long. Only by being in business could I afford it, and thgat was an even greater feeling. 24 hours after I had the springs and wheels on it.
The mk5 GTI? A definate classic, love it!
And golfcart, we might have to order some springs when you want some Paul. Cheers, see you soon mate:)

Thanks gtimkv, I sort have been there done that. I am nearly 41 and I am only very new seeing the VW watercooled light, due to the generosity of some friends of mine. Been through some tough times over the nearly the last ten years. I have had a few new cars, all Holdens (sorry to blasphem). I'll probably only get a new one via a lotto win or some stroke of luck as I am a single Dad on a disability pension and I am going through a custody battle for my son. We get by; just as long as I look after the Passat it should look after me, as it has already given good service and so far since I have had it been very reliable and I will slowly do some mods to it when i can afford it. I suppose the next car purchase I'll be involved with is for my son, who due to in part of this forum would like a Golf MK1 or 2 as his first car.

Good choice in wheels buddy :) 18's would be perfect, but if you lowre it the 17's will look very good too, and probably handle better :)

Nice car :)

Thanks blkmjc. Yes, lowering is the next thing. The thing handled so well at Sandown last sunday where it ended up being one of the "star" sars on the day.
I have read on an english forum that some 128s are fowling the plastic inner guard liners. Its just that the wheels don't look like 17s at all, more like 16s. St..fed if I know. :) :)

BLKMJC
23-08-2006, 09:22 PM
I had to make a similar decision with my car when buying wheels.

18's for look, very hot... or 17's for a nice look but better performance.

I preferred performance and handling to look so I chose 17's and I dont regret it. The MK5 is a bit bigger, so the 17's look smaller again, but lower it you'll be happy :)

Just joking. Thanks for helping grl. You organised me with fitting all those wheels in the Golf. I need organising sometimes! I am starting to get used to them now. A good customer walked in yesterday and reckoned they looked like corolla wheels! That hurt! Lucky he wasn't hurting when he left....:D

gtimk5
25-08-2006, 07:39 PM
Thanks Golfman, the tyres look higher in profile on them than they did on the GTI rims for some reason and that in turn makes em look like 16s. I'll give them another week and see......
pologti liked them but after the way the 16s on the polo look like 15s anything looks bigger. 18s would be nicer but a fair bit more expensive with decent tyres. Tyre noise can be a real drama on the mk5s too :) :)

This is the other GTI that ended up with the other set of wheels. They suit that car heaps!:)

CAn you post some photo's directly along the side of the car to show have far in or out the wheel sits please, thinking these in 18x8's painted black would look hawt on a white GTI ;-)

Better still hilton k, tomorrow is morning tea day where my customer with the white GTI comes in, makes my coffee and supplies cream donuts (god bless her!) so I will get some pics of the pair of them together. It will show the offset and also the colourcoding of the rear bumpers and side skirts.
Her GTI has Yokohamas on it and the profile looks lower than the Contis on mine. No guessing what I will be fitting in the future! The ET of the wheels is 42 compaered to 40 on the stds. Cheers, Andrew:)

Tell you what those 17's look pretty good in those pics, don't look 'small' at all. Both cars sit very very nice on them. Have they been lowered at all??

gtimk5
09-09-2006, 07:21 AM
No, not lowered at all yet. The red one, mine will be getting some springs soon. The 17s have grown on me, practicality makes sense. :)

09-09-2006, 04:41 PM
Just a bit upset about it at the moment. LHR pillar damaged, upper and lower rear bumpers. Trying to do too much at the moment. Knocked off work and raced into the local Ford dealer to get a cambelt for a rotten Econovan. With all the renovations they are doing at the dealers I reversed back into a telegraph pole. Bloody Golf blind spots! No excuse but it takes the joy out of having a new car when you put a dent in them. Nothing major but very pi..ed off with myself! Now if I had an apprentice......

:-( that's no good about the arse end of the Golf. Hope it's back to new very very soon!

What are the specs on the tyres u are running? Width, profile etc??

gtimk5
10-09-2006, 07:24 PM
The tyres on my car are the original Continentals. The white dsg is running some new high silicone content Yokohamas, same size as original. You have be careful about tyre noise on the mk5s and so that is the reason for the silicon. The Yokies look nicer on the BBS wheels for some reason. They look lower in profile. Optical illusion? I will be getting Yokohamas next. I damage 2 contis and each one cost $410!!! Good tyre but!!:)

Cars looking great on the 17's! Sorry to hear about your damage :(

I did the same in my garage once, the car still has the damage and I'm used to it now, still I know what you mean it kinda spoils the happiness :(

Good luck with repairs,

Thanks blkmjc. I was talking to a few people at the hillclimb today and they all told me where that pole was! It gets run into about 3 times a week. In a bugger of a position. Still. My mistake. Yes, It will repair pretty easily. I have moved things back to where they should be and it looks better :)

Bloody Golf blind spots! .....

Agreed, and sorry to hear about the damage. My buggered back forces me to use the mirrors a lot while I'm reversing and I HATE  the mk5 mirrors. I like mine in real time not distorted.

gtimk5
11-09-2006, 06:57 AM
Yes, I am not a fan of any late car mirrors. However I always look over my shoulder ect and I still didn't see it. Never done anything like that before and some of you would know the manouvering I have to do in the workshop. Anyway, I will get it all fixed asap. We have a huge Shannons show down here in November for all the car clubs. over 200 cars. Better be right by then. Thanks for the sympathies.....:)
