dealer wont disclose Radio Pin Number

Hi I picked up my eos a few days ago, there is a sticker on the window saying radio is protected by a pin. I go thru the documentation and find no pin, so I ring the dealer and they say we dont give em out any more, smth do do with cars being nicked with the pin in the glove box, what if I want to get the car serviced by someone other than a vw dealer ?
Should I send me mate with the tatts on his face around to the dealer ?
Does this seem right ?

When i picked up my GTI the radio wasnt coded and the card was missing so I rang up to get it as i didnt wanna drive across town back to south yarra. They werent able to give it over the phone for security reasons which was fair enough so i popped down to barloworld at glen waverly and they unlocked the radio for me and wrote it down on a business card if i ever need it in the future

the dealer no longer has the right to that, as far as im aware you have to take it there to hook up to the diagnostic computer.

IF, and it's a big IF, the code is run through the new computer system they dials back to VW, then it's possible (if not likely) that they will never see the codes. Same goes for the vehicles code used to code keys :( Mind you if this is the case, why in the hell cant the radio be like the air bag or the keys, lock the radio to the code in the ECU so it only works in that car. Problem solved without the need for codes on the user side unless you swap one stock unit for another, which would require it to be plugged into the computer anyway, so it's not like you would be causing any new problems BUT you would solve another.

If this is not the case and you can enter the code yourself, I call shenanigans on the dealer. How is it their problem is people have the code written down and in their car? Do they now have some special deal going where they will replace broken windows and radios stolen from cars that I am not aware of?? If you want to have the PIN and instructions on how to enter it hand stitched into your custom leather seats so as not to forget ... never mind.

Anyway... It's beyond me why radios in cars are still coded when no after market unit is... I mean who wants to steal a stocker radio?

The ECU will read your radio when battery has been disconnected for a period of time. No need for pin code. I have tried on my T5 when i removed the original battery.

Not quite correct as at October 2008 - the salesman looked up the radio security code on their records when the car was delivered and gave me the 4 digit code number for the radio and the code number for creating additional electronic keys if the key is damaged/lost when away from home.

You cannot stop stupidity with owners leaving this information in the vehicle however a liitle bit of lateral thinking will reveal ways of keeping this information hidden but accessible if needed - think email for one.
