View Full Version : Group 5 Sprints @ Sandown July 13th

Peter Jones

I've seen this event in a few calendars but I'm having a lot of trouble finding supp regs and entry forms.

Apparently VWCV is a member of group 5 again and Sandown is nice and close to home. (Tow truck range!) VWCV are encouraging us to represent after all:biggrin:

Anybody got the lowdown on this event?

No info on CAMS or AASA sites.

It's in the PIARC calendar which says the organisers are Ford 4 and Honda sports clubs but neither of those have any details. It's in the latest VWCV newsletter too.

I havn't heard about it, but if you go down for a run Pete, I'd love to be there. I'm on hols at that stage, so I should be free (hopefully)

I had a chat to the VWCV motor sport co-coordinator Chris today and confirmed this event is on. There's no paperwork yet but it should appear on the Ford Four site when it's ready. I'll cross post the details when I get them.

If you ever wanted to tackle a club level sprint this should be a good event.

Who's coming along?

Are they going to be charging crazy entry fees? Or will it be free to come along and spectate? Not that im fussed about the money. Just makes it a less attractive proposition

Motorsport= Big bucks. No matter what type it is. You just have to get used to it unfortunately. The only thing that varies is how big the bucks are.

For me a big cost is time as well as the dollars.

I've got to plan well within my time budget and not tackle too many things at once so I can be certain the car will actually be ready for the next event.

It takes a fair bit of planning and preparation to make sure everything goes smoothly.

It's good to go now, I just need to pop the new injectors in there and sort the tune. Once I'm happy with that I'll try the Volvo fuel distributor out. Because I run the volvo airbox anyway, it's a quick swap.

It needs a run, but I don't have a working temp gague yet! I'll pick the new VDO gauges up tomorrow and get them and the factory gauge working over the weekend.

It's fun to drive these cars on the road, they may not be the fastest in a stop light drag race, but when you get asked how fast does it go and you can quote your actual laptimes of Phillip Island and not some theoretical manufacturers spec or BS dyno HP reading, that's a special moment right there.:driver:

Regs & entry form (http://www.holdenclub.com/2008/fvhr2/FFCC_Sandown_13-07-08_cams.doc)

Now all I've got to figure out which class I fall into.

http://www.ffcc.asn.au/technical_information_files/2007%20Group%205%20Regulations.pdf

By the looks of this I should enter as modified due to the MK2 1800, unless anyone can prove that a GX K-Jet was ever fitted to a '79 Mk1. The rest of the car looks to be right for either Standard or modified classes.

what time do i need to be there?

(and where is sandown, whats the "address"??)

Peter Jones
10-07-2008, 09:20 PM
Here's the location of the track.

http://www.sandown.net.au/

From the regs

6.1. Scrutineering will commence at 8.00 am and finish at 9.30am. A compulsory driver’s briefing that must be attended by all drivers will then take place after which competition will commence. Competition shall consist of a number of multi start sprints, each of one warm up and three individually timed laps.

Which means I'll be there around 7:30 or earlier.

Heh, when i went down for the V8s, we had a hard time finding the entrance to the pits to get in. Benny got rather annoyed and layed some serious rubber in the blown GTO while we were trying to find the entrance.

i Geuss I'll aim to be there by 9, so I have a chance to catch up with Pete before he hits the track. (or do I need to be earlier Pete?)

Looking at the map, which part is actually the race track?? I can't visualise it in my head atm...:?

I'll have my camera ready. Unfortunately my good camera, is dead-ish, and in at the place getting checked or fixed or something. So i'll have my old camera. (well the family camera at least :))

Tip: You were taking the wrong line onto the straight. It's faster to head straight for the apex of the kink once your car is settled out of the last corner.

Well apparently anyway. Thats what Oscar Fiorinotto told Ben to do in no uncertain terms in the supercar.

Great shots so far, Pete. How was the car?

Peter Jones
13-07-2008, 08:26 PM
The car behaved itself, although I still can't find that missing torque. I've got the point where I'm thinking this is good as it gets for this motor.

The motor runs perfectly well it just isnt very powerful.

The lack of top end speed made me about the slowest thing on the track, but I got to have a good look at the scenery whilst ambling down the straights.

Best speed I got out of the thing was a tad over 95 MPH. Lap times were fairly consistent around the 1:55 - 2:00 minute mark. (The majority of the field was doing around 1:40 or so)

Water temp was well under control with the new radiator and hoses.

Oil temp approached 100 degrees, that oil cooler was working overtime.

Oil pressure seems to be down a bit low to me even with the Fuchs oil. I might pop in a new pump just to be safe.

I felt I was getting faster through the day, my lines were certainly improving, not too many anxious moments this time.

Brakes and tyres did their thing well, no signs of fade. I did lock the front left a few times headed into turn 1 a bit hot.

Need to practice my trail braking to turn the car, I got it right a few times but I need more track time to figure it out.

All in all a great day. I'm pretty stiff from the exertion and the bitingly cold winds today but it was all well worth it. WHen's the next event?

Most people were even wider than that on that last corner, there's not a lot of real estate to play with .

I was aiming for the line that let me carry the most revs, my best speeds down the straight were when I could exit this corner at redline.

I probably could have taken a better approach to that bend, I'm still figuring things out.:)

Yep, that bronze corolla was quick. sounded like a twin cam, with some serious work, one of the quicker cars there.

There was also a 540HP supra running 14psi of boost, ripping some quick times. It really flew on the straights.

There were a couple of quick torries, and the twin cam escorts were also spritly. Highlight of the day was the mini's though. had wel over half a dozen there, and they looked great, sounded great, and went like the clappers!

Great way to spend a day, although unfortunately we couldn't see too many twisty bits (cause we were on the straight) and it was freezing cold! that was the worst part.

I wouldn't worry about that.

I'm a big fan of the fact that you are building a good starter car and aren't going out trying to set the world on fire and impress people.

At the end of the day, being able to admit your flaws means you can work on them and improve.

You're doing this for you and you'll get better with practice. So good stuff. :)

Ill have to pick u up on that one  Too much camber and when you brake thefront wheels camber up even more so thats why you need a compremise between the 2 thats goes round corners hard and still haas enough rubber on the road for good braking... So 2.5 dgrees is about right :driver:

Oh, dude, it was A JOKE! :duh:

Next time i'll PM you with a pre warning. :)

Oh, and by the way, the camber increases only if you have a single arm front end. Dual wishbone moves linear.

Ahhh good... But i do say if yiu dont plan on going fast get as much camber as possible

Haha, that's ok dude. Yeah Neg looks mean with big wheels. Hell on tyres when you're street driving though..

This is only true for equal length parallel wishbones, which bascially no one wants or needs.

You actually want neg camber gain(on the working wheel) as your chassis rolls around a corner.

Imagine your chassis is rolling 5 degrees in cornering(not too out of reach for a golf lol) and ur set up with neg 2.5, if your wheel only moves up and down in the same arc your result will be positive 2.5 degrees on the outside wheel. Which equals not nice handling.

You can get all sorts of results from changing the wishbone lengths angles and king pin inclination of a vehicle, obviously it's not cheap or easy to do so. And as we know everything is a compromise.

Yes, late in the day took a few shots from the last couple of groups. There were some quick cars and a mixed bag as well.

Just so you know, you can hear your wife say "sh*t" about 5:10mins in..

Good clean, smooth lines from what i could see. Very nice. :)

Good to see you're starting at 90% :) and working your way up instead of 125% and working your way back.. :duh:

She also drops the F word when she tripped over the tripod a second time:biggrin:

I'm trying hard to concentrate on technique for the moment.:)

Did you spot the puff of smoke from the car on the last entry to turn 1?

I found the LHS tyres were running colder than the RHS ones due to all the LH turns.

Next time out at Sandown I might run 1-2 PSI lower on the inside and see if I can get the temps to even out. I was running 24 PSI cold (8degrees) all round (Before anyone tells me I should be running 40+ PSI - These are semi slicks - street tyre logic does not apply ) and aiming for around 30 PSI hot.

No i missed the puff. I take it you want to lower the pressure so that the tyre carcass moves around a bit more and creates some more heat? You could also try running a higher pressure to decrease the contact area a little. If you decrease it, that smaller area gets hotter faster, and it also has less surface area to dissipate the heat back into the track.

Manufacturer says less pressure = more heat

For an 800kg - 1000kg Car these are the cold temps for compressed air

For 4 laps or more 21-24 psi
For very short runs 25-28 psi

target Hot inflation is 30 - 36 psi

They do however also say that increasing the pressure does in fact reduce the contact patch as you point out, they suggest to do this when running on a wet track and increase the the pressure by 4-8 psi.

All this changes as the tyres wear too.

I'm still trying to get my head around it all, there's a lot to learn yet.

At Phillip Island I was checking temps and pressures after every run and the tyres were behaving as they should. My driving style was observed as too aggressive and hard on the tyres so I was watching tyre wear patterns more closely this time.

Regardless of all of the above, these are the best tyres I have ever driven on. Their levels of grip are amazing and the breakaway is very progressive (if you can push them that far).

My occaisional little lock up is probably better managed by experience than tyre pressure in this case.:) I'm pretty impressed that the brakes could still manage to actually lock up a hot slick on the 5th lap! Who need big discs?!

Yeah you run more pressure in the wet for the reason i said, plus it cuts through the water better and also opens up the tread.

Just a suggestion as different tyres have different characteristics. Its a lot to get your head around and unfortunately there's no rules, only theories that work for you. Different tracks even if they seem similar, can change the way your vehicle behaves to no end too.

That's why there's big bucks in motorsport...
