View Full Version : My Caddy Van

Hey guys,
I saw an Orange Caddy Van at the nats looking EXACTLY how i want mine to look. Lowered a couple of inches colour coded etc etc..
Anyway, i looked under the front and noticed it had H+R height adjustable coilovers in the front.
Does anyone know who owns this car or where they got the coilovers from? If anyone has any info about it that would be great.
Thanks,
-Preen.

Inmotive you say? Ok how about we do a group buy.. :D That would be good to be able to adjust the bump..
Yeah, you have to get the rear single leaves reset, but that's a snack. There's a suspension mob in town that does a top job.
Failing that, its a 9 inch to lop a couple of coils off the front and the oxy and a bucket of water to reset the rear. j:

back from my mini truckin days,
what's the rear leaf setup like? You may be able to flip the middle (from memory, i'd have to check it too be sure) leaf, and that usually resets the rear abut 2-3' lower in the back in lux's and deo's...

Who's got Inmotive's details? Yes Josh, i've lost the business card already..

Its single leaf and the axle sits underneath the spring. So you can't use lowering blocks either. AND you can't put the axle on top of the spring. The old man and i already evaluated all of this...

Haha, nah like i said there's a suspension place in town, Orange Spring And Suspension (crazy name huh?) who do a trick job. So it'll be down there to set the back and then wind the front to suit.
Heh, i might even corner weight it with Benny's you beaut corner weight scales, you know, for optimum cornering performance..
So... Details for Inmotive, anyone?

NO! have you ever heard a DFV? I'd take the sound of a high revving DFV over neck snapping torque any day!
No, no, no, no... You put coil overs in the front and get the rear springs reset. basically you heat them up, bend them, and quench them to give a lower installed height.

Nah you're wrong. Coilovers on the front. And brackets for the back to swap the axle onto the top of the spring and then there is another adjustment bracket that allows you to move the spring up and down in 4 stages. KW supply another shock absorber with the kit for the rear, not coilover.

Shouldn't reduce the payload at all.
What i meant was that if you convert it to coilovers in the back instead of leaf springs your maximum payload will drop.
Seems like a pretty straight forward setup. knock it over in an afternoon.. hopefully.

How does the mkv caddy compare to the mk4? Reading thru an old pvw magazine a fella in the uk flipped the rear axle around 180° and fitted beetle shocks for a 100mm drop. Then upfront he used mk2 golf struts. That gives u food for thought :)

The Orange "Perfectionflooring" Caddy was on our stand. We fitted H&R Coil overs front, and reset the rear... for perfect looks, ride and practical height of aprox 80mm lower than std. 18inch oe vw wheels were fitted.
Vince from "Perfectionflooring" also has another Orange Caddy we lowered with H&R springs only on the front axle... we acheved only 60mm drop and reset the rear to suit. So there are options for lowering depending on the budget

How much are we talking for the front coilovers? I don;t expect a public 'quote'. Just an idea within a hundred bucks. Round up to the closest hundred. :)
Like i have stated, there's a good suspension place in town that can do the rear for me. How much lowers from standard are you able to go with the H&R coilovers you used in that Orange Caddy?

Leaning towards KW ATM because they do a full kit with no modification and it is 100 pussent reversible. On the website the kit is 750 pounds for the coilover front, all the brackets etc for the rear, plus different rear dampers. Ok, well i called Dragan from Inmotive yesterday. Got all the lowdown. He quoted me 2300 for the kit (2440 RRP). More than i was expecting after doing the conversion, but considering the import duties and all the other crap that the government slugs on us its quite reasonable. I told the old man and he seemed to think that wasn't too bad. He said that these days it costs around 800 dollars (trade price) to put new standard struts in a camry.
I'm going to call Dragan tomorrow and say "here's my Debit details.." He said they are making another order from Germany this friday.

Very happy with the service so far from him. He was very straight down the line with me (which seems to be a diminishing quality in salesmen these days) and that rates very highly in my books.

There's some twisties about 5 K's from the workshop. Aydan has been up them, i took him in his car when he came down. So I'll do a full write up on them compared to the standard suspension.
This will include:
Bump stability.
Braking stability and performance.
Entry grip on/off brakes/throttle, high and low speed.
Midcorner grip and stability on/off throttle aswell as midpoint balance control.
Exit corner grip. I'm hoping for an improvement in power exit understeer due to a lower centre on gravity.
And i'm guessing the shocks are stiffer, probably with more rebound resistance, which would also improve the power understeer issue.
All that said, i'd say that the van should have more grip all round, because i'm guessing the shocks are more handling oriented and less of a ride/handling compromise. Also, if you haven't noticed, the front springs are rising rate. :D

I wouldn't be too quick to rule out cheaper alternatives. When I bought coils (weitec) they were just a company (also made by KW) that I'd heard good things about. Because you want damper adjust etc I'd say you would be in the minority. Having driven Weitec next to hottuning the difference is zero.

And I say "No, i'm serious... Seriously"
And they look at the old man and they're like "Is he serious or what? He's kidding right?"
Dad's like, "No, they're for the caddy..."
And then they're impressed. :D

Started on the caddy tonight. Got the fronts done.
FYI: Before you start jerking around, drop the control arms off on the inner side. 4 bolts and it saves a lot of jerking around when you get the strut all but 10mm out and figure out that it won't go any further. :duh:
Fairly straight forward swap. Obviously we did it on the hoist so there was no crawling around on the ground, but I don't think it would be THAT much harder if you were doing it with jacks and stands.
First up we had to remove the scuttle panel to get to the top strut bolts.
http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk182/preen59/110720081489.jpg
http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk182/preen59/110720081490.jpg
http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk182/preen59/110720081491.jpg
Then to get the strut out, you need to put a lever into the slot where the front upright claps around the strut. Lever the slot open to give enough clearance to slide the strut up and out of the upright. You may need a rubber mallet to whack it up and help it move. (Two man job. :D )
http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk182/preen59/110720081492.jpg
http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk182/preen59/110720081494.jpg
You need to get the strut bearing assembly off the old shocks to use on the new ones, so once you've done that, you can reassemble the new struts with the original bearing.
I set the perch at 10mm off bottom (10mm off lowest) to start with.
http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk182/preen59/110720081495.jpg
Preen59
11-07-2008, 08:31 PM
Then its time to put the new strut back in. The new struts are a heap shorter, so there's no jerking around to get them back in. Lever the slot open and the strut slides straight in. Easy.. :brutal:
It's basically just the reverse of how you disassembled it.
http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk182/preen59/110720081497.jpg
Then you just have to do the other side the same.
Once the other side is done, you can THEN re attach the control arms and the sway bars.
Then you can drop it down and realise that the hoist is stuck under the car!
So we had to put some blocks down under the front wheels, wind the hoist pads down and then lower the car down..
http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk182/preen59/110720081498.jpg

Haha, nice one there. Yeah i can't wait to finish it and then take it through the twisties just out of town tomorrow.
Driving to the Bottle-o tonight it was a completely different car. Granted the back was still in the air and it messed up the weight distribution (more towards the front, I got in and i said "hey, i feel like i'm gonna go through the windscreen!), but it was really good. The front had SOOOOO much better shock control. When you hit a bump, it was a little firmer, but it hit the bump and that was it, no seesawing or wobbling around. Much more reactive steering input too.
Anyway, full writeup tomorrow once the rear is done. :driver::driver::driver::driver:

Ok, finished the caddy off today.. (And then washed it..)
Pretty straight forward swap for the rear, just did one side at a time and used the wallaby jack to support the axle.
Here's some pics..
Here's the setup. Simply puts the axle ohttp://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newforum/upload/newreply.php?do=newreply&noquote=1&p=187017n top of the springs and then you put another rear shackle set on that has 4 sets of holes for height adjustment.

http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk182/preen59/120720081520.jpg
Dad made me do it! Although i think he is right. Give it a little more rake. Plus the mudflaps were scraping going out of the driveway most places. (Still does, but not as bad.. :D )
Now for a suspension analysis.
Ride
It's pretty freaking good. Just a little firmer than standard on the bumps, but sooo much better. The car doesn't wobble around at all like it did a bit standard.
Handling
Fantastic. Initial turn in is light years better. You point the wheel and immediately it goes there. Previously, on entry, the car would tip too much weight onto the loaded front tyre, causing it to tuck under (due to it being a 195/65 tyre). With the new suspension, the car rolls onto the front just enough to give the outside front some bite, and it holds on.
Midcorner the car is very well balanced, with just a touch of understeer if too much throttle is applied.
Once you're in the corner, the car's midpoint can quite easily be adjusted by the amount of throttle input. Lift off and the nose tucks in and lets you still know the back is there, apply some more throttle and the front will creep off the apex a little. Very settled, plenty of feel (Vast improvement) and very easy to drive.
Corner exit has been vastly improved. Previously (if you tried to get hard on the throttle) the car would get massive power understeer and the inside front would start to let go quite badly before the traction control cut in and dropped the power output to control it. Now, the car doesn't transfer the weight of the front on throttle, so you can get on it agressively if you wish, and hard.
The car is almost neutral on the exit now. You can actually get a little bit of oversteer (very controllable) given the right corner characteristics.
So, all in all...
It was TOTALLY WORTH IT!
I'm very happy with this suspension and would definately recommend this kit to anyone.

Hi guys, this is my first ever post; please be gentle
That fantastic looking(!) orange caddy at the beginning of this thread belongs to me. i thought i was the only mad man to want to fit coilovers in a caddy.
Preen59 i think your caddy looks great, seem to sit even lower than mine and sounds like it might ride a little better. i agree with you on the handling, the thing is sensational! would be interesting to compare the two
Cheers
Vince
Hey Vince, welcome to the forum mate!
I saw your Caddy at the Nats and i said, "See, that's how i want mine to look!" Yours is very nice.
Mine's pretty damn low, but with the smaller wheels it suits it. Yours looks great at it's height with the wheels on it.
It would be interesting to compare. Although i think mine probably rides better due to the rear spring not being reset, i'm pretty sure that my setup would have been more expensive, though.
Thanks for the kind comment.

thanks for the welcome. i cant believe i only just found out about this forum considering i have 3 VW's
Interesting that you say that about the re set as my other caddy has the exact same set up on th rear but with H & R coils on the front and the caddy rides really nice. you may have spent more but if it is a better set up...
you wil need to get used to the looks. my car turns heads like it is from another planet. i have had peaople stop me in traffic to take photos!

Yeah i decided it was a fully reversible kit so it was the best option. I'm very happy with it.
People stopping you to take photos? Wow, now that's cool. I've only ever gotten that once, and that was in the Mk1.

Trying to solve a 'squeak' in the rear at the moment. Narrowed it to the shocks, then narrowed it to the fact that we didn't prime them before we fitted them.. :duh::duh: (Idiot!!)
Anyway, while i was fiddling with them, i realised that the rears have adjustable rebound! :D I primed them and then adjusted the rebound resistance up a bit and re-fitted them. Made a lot of difference. The back was still a little soft before so now it's evened it up a bit and reduced the corner entry pitch even more. The van is dead stable now. Very happy.
The squeak is still there slightly, so i'm going to pull them out again (Heh, i'm getting pretty fast at it now..) and prime them again. Hopefully that will completely fix it.
I spoke to Dragan today about it (before i'd pulled them out and realised it was air in the circuits..) and he was extremely helpful. He said if one or both of them was faulty, he would replace them. No questions asked. That really impressed me. I'll be buying suspension for the Mk1 from him without a doubt.

Update on the suspension. Had to go to Forbes this arvo to deliver some Kart engines back that i had blueprinted. So i had about 150kgs in the back.
Anyway this was the first trip i have done out of town since i've put the new suspension in.
The van was much much more stable over bumps and rode very well sitting on around 110. It was raining all the way there and the van had much more grip.
On the way back it was absolutely teaming down to the point that it was becoming hard to see the road, so i backed it off to 100kmh.
When one wheel hit a deep patch of water it was very stable. It would still pull a bit, but nothing drastic and very controllable. Much better than before. It also has lost it's high speed mid corner U/S, that it had standard.
In town, it has far more grip on take off and when you are turning on throttle. Before, when you turned the steering wheel on throttle, it was very easy to light the inside tyre. Now it has plenty of grip and you have to use a fair amount of throttle % to break traction.
Much more grip around wet roundabouts too. Before it would start to U/S and then the front would chatter as the tyre would bite and then let go if you pushed it a little hard. Now, it has plenty of grip and you can accelerate around a roundabout in the rain with no power U/S.
**U/S= Understeer. :)
So once again, i'm very happy with the suspension.

Put the TDI chip in the Caddy today. Pretty simply install. Plug it into the wiring loom on the injector cam resolver, hook it to the battery, ground it and mount the module.
http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk182/preen59/210720081523.jpg
I mounted the module to the top of the fuse box using sticky backed velcro (Hook&loop). Looks very neat i think, and looks like it's meant to be there.
I have noticed a difference in performance. The power is more progressive and it definately has more torque. 1st gear seems somewhat unchanged (although it is hard to tell), apart from the fact that it does not have the big power surge when it comes on boost, it is more progressive, which is nice. 2nd gear acceleration is much improved. The acceleration in 3rd, 4th and 5th is far better.
So all in all.. :bigok: I'm very happy.. And for 200 bucks, how could i not be!

Finally got around to priming the rear dampers properly this afternoon. It didn't make any difference. :duh: It's still noisy, sounds like the damper valves are fluttering on the compression and rebound.
I'll have to talk to Dragan again on monday. I don't see it as much of a problem, as last time he said if there's an issue, just send them back and he'll replace them no problems.
On a much happier note, i pulled the rear mud flaps off yesterday. I got sick of them dragging going up steep driveways. This made the back look like it was sitting a little high, so while i had it on the hoist, i dropped the bum back down to the lowest position. I'm much happier with the stance now. I think it looked a little too high in the back before, even with the mudflaps still on it.
I'm also interested to see how the fuel economy goes on the trip to sydney this sunday, with the new chip i've installed. I'm undecided at the moment, but around town it seems atleast as good, if not a little better. I've also noticed that it seems to have more go when it's dead cold in the morning.

Update on the fuel economy after the cruise...
4.7L/100km Down there and 4.8L/100km back!!!
With an average for the whole day of 5.1, which included about 100 k's of beating the balls off it, so to speak.:biggrin::biggrin:
Very VERY happy with this new chip.
Also, very happy with the way it handled, and rode the bumps. Very settled. Although i need to take just a touch of rebound out of the rear to get a bit more weight transfer on the nose mid corner. It's just got that little bit of push that requires a lift off or a dab of the brakes to get the weight on the loaded tyre. But all in all, fantastic.
I think i shocked a few people..

Woo! First flat tyre today! :duh:
Got a screw or something in the LR. Haven't pulled it out yet as we've run out of the sticky strip stuff for the puncture repair kit.
Anyway, the spare wheel was easy to remove. Although i didn't realise that one of the bolts holding the wheel keeper up doesn't come out, so that you undo it, slide the keeper across and THEN it drops down. So i sat on the freezing cold concrete trying to undo this screw... Then i finally looked underneath and went oh... :duh: Idiot! I shouldn't have doubted VW to not let the wheel fall out on you.
So anyways, till next week when i can get some more puncture repair stuff, The cad-dogg has a steelie on it. :frown:
