My stereo said "SAFE" when I turned my car on tonight, then a couple seconds later changed to say "1000".
Does anyone know what would have caused this and what I can do to fix it?
Will this be something a dealer will have to sort?
that usually happen when the battery died. its a security thing for the headunit.
They should have given you a card when your car was delivered with the headunit number and a security code. just put that in.

That's what I thought, but the battery is fine, car started fine.
When I hopped in again tonight it came up with "LEARN". I turned it off thinking something was wrong then on again a little later and it worked fine, all stations were still programmed and everything.
Weird, all seems fine now.

It's happened to me once already.
My weirdest stereo incident, however, was hopping into Pogo, shutting the door and the stereo came on. I still had the key in my hand...
Mercifully it's not happened since - it was a bit too poltergeisty for my liking! :D
Cheers!

Maybe an excorsisim(spelling??) is in order for your car!!:D
I have had my stereo dump all its frequency presets and swallow a cd on me...I just disconnected the negative earth on the battery terminal, and reset it...no dramas since. Freakily/funnily enough that same day I had my computer let all its smoke out and refuse to play...I think its cos I didn't forward on that chain letter...!!!

This has happened to me at least twice now, and I've had the car for 8 months.

A similar thing has happened to me once, after shutting off the engine, and pulling the key out, the radio turned off. When I opened the door to get out, the radio turned back on. I had to manually turn off the radio, but the next time I started the car, I had to manually turn on the radio.
Other annoyances are that my radio forgets which channel it was sitting on every now and then and always reverts to WSFM...

Yeah, mine has reverted to 97.3 or some crappy station a few times when I would never listen to that.

Whats this card thing you got for the stereo, I never got anything like that? Then again they gave me Golf books until I went back half hour after delivery & got a Polo GTI set :???:

Btw, checked with service dept they advised me they dont give out these cards anymore but that its "not a problem because you just bring it back here if you need to" quote 'Werribee Volkswagen'. Yeah, so they can charge you $$$ for your trouble
