View Full Version : Melbourne Go Karting Gran Prix

Melbourne Go Karting Gran Prix, for all the Melbourne VW watercooled massive to attend and have a bit of fun and possibly some immature bragging rights for whomever comes out on top. Also will be good to see all the Golf Karts in the parking lot of a Go karting venue.

I don't really have a plan as such, nor a venue, nor a date for that matter.

It's more of a proposal.

I know in the past from trying to organise these Go Karting events that you usually need at least 8 people to 100% commit to coming or else the person who's organised it looses their often large deposit.

Open to suggested times, dates and venues.

I know of a good place in Morabbin called F1 Karts I think?
I haven't been to the one in Port Melbourne but I have heard it's decent.
There is also a good one on the Western Ring Road, Ace Karts, Deep park area I think.

Bring your Golf/polo/jetta/bora/bettle/passat/caddy/touareg/scirocco/corrado/phaeton/veyron etc, your mate, your Girlfriend, your Boyfriend (but not if he's taller than me) kiddin, family members, anyone who can drive and have some bias towards watercooled VW's as long as they can confirm 100% that they'll come.

i own a go cart, i take mine to south morang and silhoutte on the hume hwy/sydney rd. But thats probably too far for everyone, there was a mad 2 level one in lylidale i went to when i was like 13, south melbourne wasnt too bad when i went there, probably the best and easiest location for everyone too meet.

I work at ford, I drive them all the time. Not by choice.

Saturday 19th evening possibly about 7pm???

gtimk5
11-08-2006, 03:19 PM
Sounds OK ausgolfer. See if we can get some numbers now.:)

ausgolfer
11-08-2006, 04:07 PM
Figures are in...
Now what kind of race, and the cost, is all dependant on the number of confirmed people we have coming. A 50% deposit of the cost is required buy the person orgainsing so if 8 people confirm at $95 a head thats $380 deposit, so that's why I say you must be 100% sure you're coming. I don't want to be left paying for people who don't show up.

If we have 8-14 people we get an hour of track time (warm up, qualifying and a race) The cost for this number of people is $95 per head.

If we have 15-28 people we get 1.5 hours of track time. Cost $90 per head.

If we have 29-40 people we get a 2hours and 15 mins of track time. Cost of $80 per head.

The times available for the 19th are arrive at 6:30pm start at 7pm.

I need to book by Monday

I think it'll be most likely that there'll be either the 1st or 2nd option, with the 2nd being obviously better value.

PM me ASAP if you're coming, with your mobile or contact number, name etc.

11-08-2006, 09:29 PM

Ok people I went and checked out the place a few mins ago, and it's kind of small compared to the two other places I've been to before, but they are 8.5hp Karts. I'll check the prices on the other two places, one of which is 30 mins out of the city on the western ring road. The other is down the Neapean Hwy 30 mins.

Ok I've checked with the other two places and the best place seems to be Ace Karts 30 mins out the Western Ring Road I have been there recently and it really is an impressive track and they're 9hp karts, it is an outdoor all weather track. The problem is we need at least 12 people. But it'll be $80 per person so it's cheaper. Please let me know asap...........
Also I can't find out untill Monday weather or not next saturday night is available.
If all else fails we should have at least 8 people for the place in port melbourne.

Also for those not from melbourne we can orgainse a meet earlier somewhere close to the city and a quick cruise out to the venue.

http://www.acekarts.com.au/index.php?module=Website&action=Home&content=home

is the website for the place in Sunshine out the Western ring road.

I JUST got back from ace karts in Albion (off the ring rd).. adrenalin is still pumping!
These karts are FAST.... sooooooo much fun.
I actually think that if we dont have the numbers for ace karts (ring rd one) you can join another group.
We paid $70 for 30 min... but it feels like ages... infact it goes a little longer.... u have 10 min qualify and 2 10 min races (grid starts).... its an awsome track... oh, and did i mention the karts are fast :P
I came 8th out of about 18... but I got the 4th fastest lap time.... both races I spun first lap due to cold tyres *shakes head*

Anyways, I would reccomend Ace karts and def doing it again some time

gtimk5

12-08-2006, 07:06 PM
Very easy tp spin these karts. Even with warm tyres if you break mid corner you will loose the back, and if you dont counter enough u wil spin. One moment i can remember was I was going in way to hot from the straight, breaked a little to much and locked the rears.. ended up going sideways into the corner and drifting the whole way... only problem is that when u do that it takes a few seconds to get back into the power.

Hey! I suggested next saturday night so I am not going to back out now. Been geeing up the Melbournions to commit. Got a barby in the arvo at Volkspower 1st and then its on I reckon. I have been geeing up gtigrl as well and yesterday she said it was go with her and partner but she obviously hasn't been near the forum for a couple of days. So thats 3 of us. I haven't spoken to Guy Harding who is coming down from Qld for the weekend.
Wa talked a lot on the forum about the Hobart one last night to get people to go without a lot of success though we still got 12 on the night. We just can't have any backer outers on next weekends! Cheers. Andrew

Can you put a post of final details mate, its getting a bit confussing for my brain :P

I have gathered:

Venue: Ace Karts - 20 Carrington drive, Albion

Price: $80 (I paid $70 with about 16 ppl last weeks so why $80?)

When: Sat 19th August, 7:30pm

Cruise before hand: Meet at Albert park 6:00pm

Is all this info correct?

cheers
Lee

ausgolfer
14-08-2006, 03:58 PM
Yes thats all correct. But aim to be there by 7pm.

And the reason for the price difference is, that there are many different types of Group Races, I opted for the slightly longer 40mins of track time for $80 as opposed to the 30mins of track time for $70. I thought it was better value.
If you check the website you'll see the different options.

40 minutes of racing per driver (approx 65 laps)

Racing consists of:

10 minute practice & qualifying session.
2 final races consisting of 15 minutes each.

worm
14-08-2006, 04:46 PM
Cheers mate

Thats a much better option. 2x 15 min races would be sweet. I really wanted one more race and then you would probably be to stuffed for another, so 15 min races is cool.

Ill be there by 7pm..You have to fill out a bit of paper work before u can race. Just to note, the actual time at Ace karts will be about 2 hrs. You have 15 min or so introduction then geting ur gear on, get in karts, presentations etc.. takes a little while.
Looking forward to it!

It's not about who's the lightest.

Ok the day is here.
I haven't checked the weather report but the sky looks nice and clear with no redness, I'm guessing it'll be fresh for most of the day.
I hope no one is getting nervous because they have nothing to fear, well not much anyway. MU HU HA HA!

As expected it was a hard fought battle. Many biffs and bardges, and the occasional love tap that I was extremely guilty of at times. I'm sure many people will say many things.
What I have to say is:
IT WAS AWESOME!!! especially the winning part!
Glad so many people were able to come along. Lots of new faces to me and a few old ones which is also good.

Ha ha ha.
It wasn't me this time WABIT!
I think I've broken a sparkplug due to the 8700+ missed gear.
Spluttered all the way home under load.

Can't kill it!
1.8 8V = Bulletproof

It was nice to meet up with you Andrew & spend time talking (top bloke! Hope you enjoy the CD) & the rest of the watercooled crew, new & regular's.
Also to gtigrl & Justin, it was a bit of a coincidence to meet you the night before too, & look forward to future meeting's.
Goodluck & enjoy Sandown to all of you & post up some pics.
I've never seen so many MK5 GTI's, Polo GTI's & R32's in the same place at the same time before.
MK2 GTI if you have any drama's with the 20V, send us a message. Try & find a old RH diesel engine mount & cut the injector pump bracket off!

I hope to be in it next time. I hope!

Thanks a lot Carl, and well done on the win!!!
*applause*

I apologise for not making the gtg at albert park by 6pm, I gave myself 30mins from Camberwell...

The karting action was awesome, and I was able to notice huge differences as the race went on. I was a little bummed out when i got passed twice on the flashing yellow lights in the first race. I was taking it slow after being warned in practice, and then I get passed. I also wish my helmet had a visor as i nearly went blind with dirt and wind. It would be nice to have a break between races, but time=money for those guys.

I look forward to another go karting session sometime!

Hey ho folks, thanks for a great night racing, I bet no one can compete with the golfball size bruises I now have on my knees thanks to being to small for the b*$&&y seats and too light to keep the blasted thing on the ground.... pics to follow just to gross you people out :)

As far as Sandown what a fantastic day, turns out I drive my actual car better than a go cart! Did 4 laps of Sandown (after some obligatory safety stuff) with a former racing driver (forgot his name) and got the polo up to about 190km down the back straight, what a rush! Well worth the money... pics to come soon of that as well.... as well as some motorcana style sections, go to whoa and control stopping and swerving blah blah blah.
Right I am knackered now so time for a drink ;)

Oh my, they're impressive bruises GTIGRL. Not my fault though! Should have read the disclaimer at Ace Karts(licence to kill or be killed, jk jk).
Oh well, I'm sure you'll get many offers of remedial massage etc. to fix them up, not sure how well your man would like that though.

I really was impressed with the standard of racing. There was no one who was really lagging behind. Which was good and made for good traffic manouvers.

Is September 15th when your exams are over golfman? You really need to come along on one of these forum events, I'm not sure if we've seen you yet.

Hey blokes and girl! What a top night. It was so good to catch up with you all. Had a bit of trouble finding the meeting spot but thats to be expected! Thanks Carl for organising the karts ect. I thoroughly enjoyed the night and the comany. The track was brilliant, the karts were fast (especially Carls!) the racing was nice and clean and close. Had some seriously close races and sorry for anyone that I served! I was impressed that when some hit you hard or passed under a caution, (there was a fair few!) that they redressed the situation.
A huge thanks to you people for coming along and making my weekend even more memorable. I want to come back over soon! Cheers, Andrew:) :D
