Frustratingly (for me anyway) it seems that the Wagons were built before Sedans and order dates having nothing to do with build priorities which explains why yours is on the boat so early.

Congratulations though :)

You can track the location of Vessel from this website

http://www.vesseltracker.com/en/Home.html

Just simply type in the name of the Vessel and it will show you the "delayed" position of the vessel. The vessel (Tortugas) which carries my TDI Passat is approaching S.Africa now. Your car is still in Bremerhaven according to this website

No, if your VIN doesnt come up on the system. That means you car hasnt been loaded onto any vessel. If its loaded, it should show on the that WW website.

Correction.....if the VIN doesn't come up it meant my car has not been loaded on a Wallenius Wilhelmsen ship. Oh well its prob not far behind. Another couple of weeks won't hurt.

I got the call from the dealer today saying the car was on a ship, so I got her to send me the VIN. Turns out the car was loaded on to the Trinidad on the 19th, and is now very close to Southampton. It's expected to arrive in Melbourne on May 24 :D :D :D

She completely understands if I get angry at Volkswagen for holding back the car until "launch" though!

Guys...need some help with the tracking website. Which option should I use to search with my VIN? I've tried a few but nothing comes up. Dealer's system shows its on the ship tho....any ideas?

Steve

From http://www.2wglobal.com/ head to cargo tracking at the bottom right, then Auto Cargo. The cargo ID is your VIN.

Vene
28-04-2008, 09:45 AM
Hmm....no good. I'll double check the VIN with my dealer. Are all VW cars shipped through this company?

Steve
28-04-2008, 09:50 AM
I don't think so, but there are at least two ships carrying R36's to Australia so maybe there's a third from another company, too... who knows.

I hope it's just a VIN mistake and you're on the earlier-to-arrive and therefore far superior Trinidad :)

Vene
28-04-2008, 10:20 AM
My car is not scheduled to be shipped for another week that's why I can't find it on the system. Looks like a July delivery :(

On a brighter note, just found out VWA is testing its own version of the Premium Bluetooth module customised for the Aust. market. It can be retro fitted to cars (with RNS510) and could be available mid year. :)

Seems the EU version does not work with our networks (well 3G or nextG could have issues).

Steve
28-04-2008, 10:31 AM
Nuts... that's no good. Mine is currently off the coast of Africa, somewhere in the Mediterranean :)

Good news re: premium Bluetooth, thanks for that useful bit of information :)

I just got an email from my dealer saying that all R36's will be witheld by VWA until the official launch at the end of August, irrespective of when the cars arrive in Australia. Would they really do that?

Steve
29-04-2008, 12:07 PM
I've heard that might happen, but let's hope it doesn't. Volkswagen Australia are so disorganized that each dealer has been telling us different stories with regard to just about anything about the R36.

If they do, I'm sure we can kick up a big enough stink. I'm sure those of us who have cars on ships already wouldn't mind making a few phone calls each day to somebody in Volkswagen asking where their cars are...

If my car is withheld I might just decide I'd prefer to withhold part of my cheque for something that's been sitting around somewhere depreciating or possibly being used as a press car for a few months.

I don't see why they would do it, but I guess anything is possible.

I'm sure ACA or Today Tonight could make quite a good beat up over this.

In fact, maybe that's what VW wants - a bit of free publicity from customers desperate to get their hands on the new VW super car!

This is getting hilarious mate....Whats the big deal???

It doesnt really matter if you get it in June, July or next year. You will still be driving the car. Why you guys keep on arguing......Things like "I will get it in June....dealer promised me July delivery"....this sorta craps. At the end of the day, any of us who placed the order will be driving it. It wont make you look COOL or RICH if you get the car earlier. So just sit back and see what VAG is going to do. If they can hand over the car earlier than the official release date (3rd Qtr 2008), good on them. Otherwise....WAIT!!!! You guys can't do much about the delivery date right. Be patient.

Steve
29-04-2008, 05:37 PM
It does matter.

Volkswagen Australia prevented me from changing my order (I wanted to add Dynaudio) because the car was "in production" so I'll be ending up with a car that isn't quite what I wanted. Fair enough, I should have made up my mind earlier.

However, to prevent me from changing my order because the car is being built, then to ship my not-quite-what-I-want car here only to decide it will sit around gathering dust for a few months is unacceptable, especially if they knew it was going to sit around for a few months anyway.

What will happen to the car in the few months that it's sitting around? Will it be inside or outside? Will it be driven around as a dealer demo or as a press car? It is possible for VW to reset the odometer, so it is possible for this to happen. If it is just sitting around, what's the point?

What are Volkswagen Australia possibly trying to achieve by withholding cars from what were once happy customers?

All it will do is make us angry and not want to deal with Volkswagen again.

I am not any desperate. If you don't have a car to drive with in the mean time. Go rent one like myself. Also what do you mean you CAN'T drive it. It is a matter of time issue though. You will still get the car but the question is WHEN? If VAG is going to hold up all the R36 until official launch. What can you do? Tell me about it mate. The only thing you could do is WAIT. That is the problem on pre-ordering something that hasn't been released. Compromise guys.

Here is a question - Who has actually driven one of these cars ? We could all be waiting for a dud yet we are creating artificial hype about how wonderful the car is. Kind of like finding a new partner...looked good but was only a short term proposition.

Easy solution go buy something else if you can't or don't want to wait. Plenty of choice in this price bracket.....looks like what I will be doing. We have bought a fleet of VW's for our company and looks like I will be changing brands. :?

Steve
29-04-2008, 11:21 PM
I haven't heard of anybody having driven one of the production vehicles yet.

The only other car in the R36 price bracket I want is the 135i, and it's too small :(

ralphk
29-04-2008, 11:42 PM
Could be wrong Steve but

WRX STI
Liberty H6 or GT
HSV
FPV

if size is an issue
Hummer H3
Landcruiser
Pajero

I think any of these can be had for a similar price.

Oh yes I do agree, I would ideally like an M3 but willing to settle for a 335. I did suggest to the dealer to drop a digit of the price tag..

Steve
29-04-2008, 11:54 PM
I looked at those and discounted them... the criteria were:

1) Smaller than my Commodore wagon.
2) Smaller than Dad's Q7.
3) Smaller than my 80 series Landcruiser.
4) Larger than Mum's Golf GTI.
5) Quicker than my Commodore, and more fuel efficient.
6) Able to carry golf clubs, swag, camping gear, and so on.
7) Not an Australian made car.
Eight) Cheaper than a Q7.

The Liberty GT was the only other realistic option other than the Passat, but I didn't like the small boot or interior quality or ride or looks or sound. Because I'm going halves with the parents, their input was important and they both wanted something European and mid sized. They hated the awful standard seats in the diesel and V6 Passat, Mum missed the DSG paddles in the V6, and Dad liked the sound of the RNS510 with reversing camera (like his Q7 has).

Looking at the Passat, I didn't like a lot of things about the diesels and the V6, but the R36 fixed all that at a price similar to that of a V6 optioned as we want and we get proper seats too!

The wait is irritating me. Mum has been overseas for the past few months so I've been driving her GTI more than I usually do, but she gets back next week and I'll have to dust off the boat (Commodore) :/

There really isn't any other car like the R36 in the price bracket..
WRX STI / EVO Lancer- Too small and boy racer + bland&featureless interior
Liberty GT - Too slow and featureless interior
HSV & FPV - Pathetic Australian build "quality", featureless interior, only 4 star ANCAP safety and a depreciation nightmare.
335 - Too small & expensive
It seems anything in a like size with some performance is a massive price jump away..
S6, M5, etc..
The R36 sits right between the Liberty, HSV/FPV and the S6/M5 markets which is probably the reason so many of us are sticking to our orders.

If VWA decide to hold deliveries whilst the cars are in the country I wonder how many of us will say stuff it and comprimise on the HSV/FPV/Liberty/etc products. I know I don't want my future car exposed to the elements, and depreciating whilst I'm paying full price for it. I also would have been able to cancel my order and re-order a wagon if they are going to be delivered at the same time.

ralphk
30-04-2008, 09:33 PM
Depreciation is always a good question. I do 40000+ per year so anything I have depreciates like mad...no exception yet.

Steve sounds like you have talked yourself into waiting. Me on the other hand busy looking at options. Had a look at the new FG today, not bad. The XR6T is about 20k cheaper and it is quicker then the R36. I am sure ample boot space for golf clubs and same gearbox as BMW and Aston Martin I understand. So if you say 70k for R36 and 50% depreciaiton over 3 years the car would be worth 35k representing a 35k drop, if XR6T is 50K and depreciates 60% in same time than it would be worth 20k so drop of 30k.

Anyway at the end of the day it is a personal choice

CW Golf 5 Door DSG GTI with leather and RNS510, was to be a CW Golf Sport TDi 5 door DSG/Xenon/Leather/Reverse and RNS510 but VW screwed up my production date from week 10 to 14 and then to 21 and then my dealer screwed my for another $5000 so I told them what to do with it and found a GTI on a ship (had to give up on Bi-Xenons but was desperate at this stage).

Only a few more weeks all going well. The wait is killing me.

Steve
07-05-2008, 09:15 PM
You'll love it. We have a 5 door white GTI without any sat nav and without leather (so basically the only option is the DSG), and it's awesome. We've had it for two years and I still get a big smile on my face every time I drive it :)

As I'm sure you'll love the R36. The next few weeks are going to go so slowly......

Steve
07-05-2008, 09:46 PM
Yeah, they're going to kill me.

I've been driving Mum's GTI (I paid the difference between a TDI optioned how we wanted and the GTI to ensure driving rights) while she's been overseas for the past 4 months and I have to go back to my Commodore half the time now... ouch!

I don't think the R36 will be as sporty as the GTI but it's certainly more useful for me and will hopefully sound better and go faster and be more comfortable to live in, so I'm happy with the decision to buy it... I'll just have to borrow the GTI every so often to punt it through some corners :)

Wolves1877
08-05-2008, 11:36 AM
Whilst it probably won't be as nimble as the GTI, due to it's size, I'm hoping that it will still be a sporty drive and more than capable of handling the twisty bits. It would be a shame if the handling wasn't there to match the engine.

Vene
08-05-2008, 11:48 AM
I hope so too.....I drove the std v6 with lowered suspension and 18" wheels which is as close as I could get to the R36. Ride and handling was very good for a biggish car. One way to find out for sure I guess.........

has anyone heard from their dealer as to when they expect to have their first demonstrator vehicle available? sometimes they also get press cars before the car is available for purchase.

My order is a week 21 build so I won't be expecting my car until the end of August (at the earliest), but I'd love to get a test drive of a car before then if possible.

My order is a week 21 build so I won't be expecting my car until the end of August (at the earliest), but I'd love to get a test drive of a car before then if possible.

I can answer this question. This would be definitely after the official launch date as there were a huge waiting list on the R36. They won't have any demo available, not until they have cleared the waiting list. That's pretty much common sense. If you see a demo in the show room, you probably would take the demo instead of waiting bloody 6 months+ for a new one, wouldnt ya.

Whilst the car I've ordered is being built to my specification, I have made sure that the final purchase decision is subject to a test drive. So if I can get a test drive before my car arrives (August) I'll know whether to stick with the order or go for an A6.

I would go for the A6 3.2 FSI quattro tiptronic anyday. But its like $25-30k difference. :?

That's why I went with the VW.

I'm taking an A6 3.0 TDI quattro for a test drive tomorrow. Slightly different proposition but still an interesting option for a family car.

Does the 3.0 TDI come in an A6 wagon? I don't think it did when I looked, so the closest alternative was the Allroad... but it costs far more than a bloody Q7, and we have one of those already...!

There is no way of telling where my car is now untill it arrives at the dealer is there?

I don't think so. Mine escaped from the boat a week or two ago and I haven't been able to track it since. We can't get the Patrick Autocare booking number from the VIN/WW website, so I'm in the same boat... I don't know where it is unless the dealer tells me. I'm hoping to pick it up in a week or two, but I can't see where it is so I have no idea :)

We're expecting two R36's to turn up here at the dealership in about 12-14 days at most. It takes about the same time for our cars to clear through Patricks as it does in the east so sit tight peoples they're nearly here :)
