These were taken by some good friends a few years ago.
Motorkhanas are a lot of fun and pretty easy on your car. They are pretty technical and require a good memory!

I cant quite believe that you would let a car that was once so pretty be covered in bird crap.. shame on you!

I know..... I need some motivation to get back into it. Even just get him on the road as a sorted road car. I was going to reshell him but time is a problem. Get him going for next years Bug In.
I was out doing things in him 20 weekends a year at least and these days I get very bored on the weekends. No preparation to do, nothing. Go on these drives (in the Mk5) they have down here.
Motivate me someone!

Motivate me someone!
I've got plenty of 1.8 motor bits ,twin webers and manifold etc
Shouldn't be too hard to get 170 hp
and size 12 Blundstones to give you some extra motovation.

I am interested Golfwise, you know that. But the size 12 Blunnies? I probably need a good kick up the A to get motivated!!!
I have a car you are interested in, Do a deal??:)

Sounds like a great idea guys :) That way, we may see two racing Golfs out and about instead of none ;) Drag him out from the shed and bring him back to life :)

Yeah I know Golfman, but Gunter isn't show material by any means! He's had over 6 years of everything being thrown against him (including guide posts and an out of control Lucaliar at Symmons) and he's looking a bit tired.
I built it up to protect my black Mk2 GTI door,(86gtis now) as its easier to repair or throw away than a later one. In that respect he well and truly exceeded my expectations! Will get him going again someday soon......:)

Same year that we hit the 3 guide posts! About 3 months after. He was all fixed 4 days after out "off". Same with T boning the car at Symmons. Front wa shoved across a couple of inches. Stripped it on yhe monday after, sent it to be pulled straight. Golfwise kindly gave me a front panel that had been in a blackberry bush for about 6 years. Got that sandblasted, remounted it and painted it all up with new guards ect. Competed in a hillclimb 2 weeks later trying to defend my title. Didn,t win though.
Gunter, apart from a couple of times was a very low cost, low maintenance car. Over the whole time competing he owed me less than $30,000. Thats over 6 years of competition. To put that in perspective, I was talking to a local with a Porsche 930 last night who has spent $200,000 in two years!
I know he is in a different league to me but he has never beaten me in a hilllclimb yet. Will this year though, remember, no motor or gearbox!!!!! Cheers! :D :D

gtimk5
18-12-2006, 06:16 AM
Thanks blokes. Plan to get my sh.t together next year. I will have to work out which way to go as with road events I can't run a twin cam and I think a hot 1.8 S.C. is all I can run these days. I don't plan on doing any more circuit racing because of the mind games and politics of some others. Sort of put me off motorsport before but road events are a lot of fun and brings out the all round drivers.
Cheers, Andrew, and thanks, I need some geeing up! :)

Hey! thanks for that!!! Been busy trying to patch my daughters cabrio back together after her christmas eve T bone job. Unfortunately the front is twisted too much so it looks like it might be a write off. I have been working on getting back on the road but the time might have come to switch off the machines..... :( Let the insurance company handle it. I will by it back if I can.......
Bloody shame as GLI cabrios dont come along everyday.

Ouch.
Hard to tell from the photos - are the rails out of wack?
If the wheel took the impact, wouldn't have been pretty...

BTW, keep us posted on brackies B&B in April.
I'm planning another quick visit around then..

Hi I an, the actual cast hub bearing carrier was bent beyond belief!! couldnt rotate the wheel at all as it was hard up against the strut
the front has moved up and accross 1.5 inches. lucky she didnt get hit another metre back. Would have been a very different christmas.
was a bit different anyway.
Anyway, got to get to gunter now.....
We will organise the targa weekend very soon mate. Cheers and a happy 2007 to you! Andrew:)

The Cabrio is surely fixable, just lots of work.
Make sure you buy it back if it ends up as an insurance job.

Ugh - thanks Andrew.
Sounds ugly:(

I agree with Matt that scapping it is a shame, but fixing it does sound a challenge - welding a new new front end on not an option?

Glad for the sake of your daughter that the Golf did make the (likely) ultimate sacrifice though.

Hope that 2007 is kinder to the Robinson household:)

I really think that the insurance company will write it off. My intention is to buy it back and repair it. I have a complet front end sitting in the shed, from the seats forward but I would prefer to straight it. It does have a bit of rust in the rhf which will get repaired in time. Cheers, Andrew :)

Bought the cab for $1100 with a crook head gasket and radiator. It also had numerous electrical faults so I replaced the fuse box and wiring harness. Also fitted Konis. The thing went so well with all the GTI running gear (std). I replaced the hub and guard at home and drove it into work. Didnt feel any different to before the accident but its running a fair bit of neg camber on the rhf. And with the front skew whiff, its very hard to close the bonnet. BOOO....:(
It wouldnt take too much to pull it. As I say, she was lucky she didn't cop it in the door. The lower sill panel thickness is about 5 times thicker on the cab compared to the normal golf but she was hit higher than that. As it was, she wacked her head on the window pretty hard.
Cheers, Andrew:)

Ouch thats nasty hopefully shes OK. Damn people will they ever learn.

Andrew was the car fully insured or third party? Because when I had my accident my vr6 was only 3rd party and it was a ride off t-boned right into my door. I got the car back free, and I got paid out for it by the other company.

gtimk5
07-01-2007, 08:29 PM
Hi Steve, yes, it is fully insured so we should be ok there. I should be able to get the quotes organised tomorrow and we can find out what the next move is then.
It was actually her fault. She only had her licence for 5 weeks and she locked up the brakes at an intersection in a very heavy downpour. I had taught her to go non and off the brake pedal in that situation , which she did but each time it locked up. We hadnt had rain for over a month and that particular intersection is notorious for oils ect. No excuses though, she meast up and has learnt a lesson. I also thinkl that 13 inch wheeels are more prone to aquaplanning as welland I nearly got caught out in the cabrio in 2005 driving it in the winter while waiting for the Mk5 to arrive. I fitted new tyres to it before my daughter got her licence.
Anyway, its workout day for Gunter tomorrow too!!!!

Good luck with Gunter resurect him. Was there a problem with the brakes that they kept locking up or did she just press the brakes to hard?

gtimk5
08-01-2007, 08:46 AM
Nothing wrong with the brakes Steve, the GTI specs mean a bigger booster and the larger calipers and ventilated front discs. I got caught out twice while I was driving it the other year and put it down to the tyres, thats why I replaced them. Bear in mind on that particular intersection there are always accidents there, s[ecially in the wet and It looks like there has been a couple more since christmas eve.:?
Going to look at Gunter today, will pm you Loon. Thanks for your support mate.:)

Might be interested in the rollcage and perhaps other Mk 1 bits. Coming to Tassie for the inaugural Bug-In all being well. Either in my Mk 1 or Mk IV R32 if it's not sold. Not interested in some 6 cylinder Golf power are you? - more fun than a Mk V GTi!

B e great to see you at the bug in. The day at Baskerville raceway on saturday will be fun. It is going to be a great easter weekend! I am the chief scruitteneer for the show side of it, not a judge though,,,
My aim is to have Gunter well and truly up and running for that. I am not seperating him. It is a quick little jigger around there.
The loss of 2 golfs in our family over the last 3 weeks have stopped any progress at present....:(
