View Full Version : audi 80 '89 auto wont select forward gears

hey guys ive got a audi 80 that worked okay up till about 1hr ago, the car first wouldnt reverse then it would and i could drive forward. but now i cant drive forward and i can only reverse ??? , the fuild level is past the dots when warm. does it have to be read cold or warm ? i put in an extra 500mls to see if that would fix it but it didnt.
any ideas

Hi mate , to answer the question about checking the oil you check in in park warm. What was the gearbox behaving like before this happened??? Did it change up and down before this happened??? RBP gearbox me thinks from memory , reason i ask is the first thing i thought was clutches, as pressure must be ok if reverse is good.

yeah the auto seemed alright before , only problem was sometime it would shift between 2 and 3 at around 80 and not make up its mind untill you flattened it. the guy i brought it of reckoned he had the auto rebuilt 6months ago. but maybe that never happened. i have used it less than 250kms since i brought the damn thing. but it did seem to pick all gears well when i bought it. reversed up hills easy and manually selected all gears.

The main part of the box was fitted to Mk1 Golf , Kombi and T3 and some of the older Passats code name 01N box code RBP. Standby mate with some ideas mate

cold i get a mk1 box and swap out some bits and pieces into the audi ? i really dont wanna do that . i would love to not have to 2 do much work too it

yeah i got the van running like a clock, changed the engine loom ;) and it fixed it all lol and all the other things i did have probably helped it work well now.

Bad news about the box sound like forward clutch has ko,d or the hub for forward clutch has cracked , they were bad for that. Availability of parts not good, best to fit a usedy or get yourself a recon, but its good night irene for that one im afraid.

ive got a good connection for a 3a motor and manual gearbox , is it a easy swap to go from the 1.9l to 2l just connect up the 2l in all the same places ? (fuel etc) and will the drive shafts match up to the manual box ?, is it a viable conversion. cheers brenton

What is your engine code letters mate??? i think there is a few differences. Anyway you know you will need to fit pedal cluster, hyd pipes, gear remote etc, flywheel clutch and all the rest. Big job mate, but get me your codes..
To answer your question older Passats had the box and yes i do think it is the same as the Caravelle mate 01N, fairly sure on that one. The arse end of the box is Golf 1 mate but a big hassle to change and finding a good one is a fat chance.

my engine code is a SD , i can get a complete 3a with inlet and exhaust and still connected to the gear box , so i wouldnt have to worry about the clutch etc. so i would just need to get and set up the pedal and shifter
