I've got a small dilemma..

The current wheels I'm looking at is made for cars with 12mm lug bolts - I believe the polo gti came in 14mm lugs.

I was told by a mate i can get my wheels profesionally drilled to fit 14mm lugs by a wheel specialist - is this practice recommended/normal?

or does it consequently weaken the structure of the wheel... somehow?

Approximately, enlarge each hole by 2mm you'll drill out 41sq mm metal. Assume it is 4 stud wheel, so about 204 sq mm metal is gone. I reckon it is ok :) only if it is done professionally.
Did you see some one is selling redrilled wheel ? if your case won't work then why people did complete redrill.

My mate had a Corolla GTI a few years ago and he managed to get a hold of some 16' inch magnesium wheels from some racing team. Race wheels only have one large nut to hold on the wheel. He got the wheels drilled to suit a 4 stud pattern and never had any problems. He used them mostly on the track not on the road. The work was done by Mick's Metalcraft.
