mmm, just had bad experience with my 2002 2.5 tdi transporter, started to drive out of carpark and big bang. called racq, told me turbo hose disconnected, so into the mechanic. turns out no turbo probs, it was the engine mount on drivers side was disconnected...$450 later ouch. the big prob was thought I would get a service done at same time, and mechanic told me slave cylinder for clutch is leaking, and quotes me $1200 to repair...what the !!!!! apparently gear box has to come out .if I could repair myself I would !!!

OUCH !!!!

IRRC replacing the clutch slave cylinder is a big job as it is inside the housing. Might be worth getting an independant VW specialist to quote on the job to see if they are cheaper. Also check your clutch for wear while you've got it apart, as it will probably save you $$ to repalce it too if it is more than 1/2 worn.

thanks for that, thought that might be the case, asked 1 other mech, same price, asked bloke doing the job to also check clutch. oh well least everything else is ok. mechanic told me more than half the cost is labour.

Jimmyd, are you absolutely certain the slave cylinder needs replacing ? Have a look at this thread, it might just save you some $$$$$

Although the link refers to the T5, it's probably very similar on the T4.
The only thing I didn't agree with, is saying it's as good as new now after having so much rubbish in the cyl.[maybe he was refering to the operation]
I make a point of changing the clutch fluid every 2 years when I do the brakes on my other cars.[my T4 is an auto]
I wasn't aware of not using DOT5 in the system with ABS.

been seeing fluid level drop slowly last couple of months, and fluid running down bell housing, mechanic also noticed and traced it being slave cylinder. gr8 link, think I've got a lot of learning to do 'bout my t4 lol...:)

Ah well, it was worth asking the question (just in case). Sympathies for your upcoming work/expenses.

I have a policy of changing most fluids every 2 years (brake, clutch, coolant), and power steering every 4 years. Any hoses (particularly coolant) are replaced the moment they show any signs of softening. It costs a bit extra, but I believe it is worth it for the piece of mind (and seems to help reliability, too)

I have never changed power steering fluid. Do you notice much rubbish in the oil when you do? Is there any bleeding procedure, or does it take care of itself?

I didn't know that the engine mounts are hydrolic, naturally none in Queensland, have to come from Sydney, so taking 5 days to get van repaired

I've never done it myself, only ever had steering specialists do it for me. Haven't had my T5 done yet as it is only 14 months old.

well, no engine mount prob, was the bolt holding it on had snapped in the middle, so just a new bolt, slave cylinder was def stuffed, and after checking clutch plate, about 50 percent worn, so mech rang VW and was told they don't supply plate, have to buy whole assembly..surely this can't be true..$2600. Mechanic getting plate machined if possible...must learn how to do some of this myself !!!
