mk14wd
27-06-2005, 10:18 PM
i got there and back without any problems and that includes being pulled over by the policia
the only problems i have had is that people arent that impressed because its got a 1600 gemini engine in it, but when you build a car in 8 weeks you use what you got and fix it later.

Thats great man, how about a pic taken in daylight? I know its a big ask at this time of year. Sort the Gemini Engine out though. What did you use for the car? 5 door or 3 door golf?

mk14wd
28-06-2005, 09:27 PM
used a 3 door

So you used the modified cabin and mounted it to the ute chassis?
I only ask as I have a v8 hilux with a rusty cab and this gives me an idea!

mk14wd
29-06-2005, 10:13 AM
yeah jackaroo chassis and running gear (purchased for free) had to modify the firewall to fit jackaroo pedals and steering and make tunnel to fit gearbox

Nice. Can you register it?
You must be able too, as there is a MINI van with big wheels and 4wd locally.

mk14wd
29-06-2005, 10:20 AM
anything can be registered you just need to know how to go about it. for me to register as a vw i would need to put side intrution (spelling) bars just one example or i can register as jackaroo with body modification cert wich is the easiest way

Golf Loon
29-06-2005, 10:25 AM
Yup, I`d go the Jackaroo with body mods. I think you need new bolts and strong mounting points and thats about it. It looks mad. Have you got a good quality front corner view?

Well done :!: Mate you've had me thinking if a cool super low awd mk1 but 8) 4wd mk1 never even crossed my mind. I'm live at sunnybank hills would love to come over and check it out. I've a mk1 16v finished well sorta can't get it to run properly will get there eventually i hope, $ is always a factor, also have several 1600 motors sitting under the bench would be willing to give one to you swap for a hand to get mine running or somethink along those lines. Once more top job.
Would also like to get any golf drivers for near future to go for a regular cruz up here QLD although i'm sure we would all fit in macers drive thru would be cool 4wd mk and all

i agree an assult on the city with a battalion of golfs would be awesome
my brother has a mk2 and we are busy getting a mk1 together as a play car. any ideas as to why you cant get your 16v to run properly, my dad knows golf motors inside out literally so with a trian of thought i can get his mind cranking and you may have it running with little effort

No idea as to why it won't run properly, have tried everythink i can think of timing has been an issue but i checked over and over. I will idle sometimes if you'r lucky :!: :? as you go to accel the piece of *%$#
will hunt all over the place back firereing and carring on. My olman came over the otherday and pulled plug #1 off and it actualy picked up revs, know this sounds just like the timing is out badly like i've said checked that. But truthly no-one with inside knoledge of the golf motor has looked at it. BY the way whats you're oldman do :?: wouldn't be ralph at all would it.

yo dohcdave sounds like spark issues thats if u know u havnt done anything bad to it, might have to grab a new set of sparkys or leads, if there old that is i used 16v leads for only 1 year and i had to replace the spark plugs and leads keeping the head extension of course and now im using fat 7mm leads will be suprised how much a faulty spark plug can cause there allways over looked wher its just a simple problem, damn spark i get heaps worried when something like that used to happen, a spark plug, that was the problem
or your motor could just be shot

cheers

Sounds like a good idea to replace the leads, tried two sets of plugs think i'll stick with the new one's of brian GTi. Leads though, the one's i've got are standard looking & old, may have to replace them, any thoughts of where to get them besides Brain GTi, i think he has them for about $140.

DOHCDAVE I'd make sure that the bottom timing belt pulley hasn't spun. A very common failing on VW motors. The bolt breaks or comes loose. The pulley rocks back and forth for months but you don't notice until A: it gives way all together and the valves get bent or B: the running gets so bad you don't drive it any more.

I had the same thing on my G60 Passat. It appeared to be timed up perfect. The notch on the crank pullay at TDC the dissy pointing to number one and the the cam set as per the book.

After an hour of messing about I stuck a screwdriver in number 1 plug hole and behold it wasn't at the top when it should have been. The woodruf key was completely gone from the pulley.

If you do find damage there I insist that you replace the std stretch bolt with one from the 1800 DX engine. It is just a hex head not a 12 point but is is much stronger. VW should be able to get them if not I would post you one down.

Have a read here on the subject.

I have made a few calls to VW and they have the ht lead ends for $16. was thinking of replacing the lot as i've repaired one of them already pain in the ass cause i wan'ted to, no no, needed to keep the clip off the end to reuse. Would luv a set of 10mm i've seen in one of my books, in the uk though. :? :? :? :?
AND THANKS FELLOW MEMBERS FOR THE  'S
And :o to get so many replies.

Good on ya bro, its a damn impressive project and a damn sight easier and registerable mounting the body onto a separate chassis like you have. Keep up the good work.
