Hi all,

thought i best get back into it now i've got some spare time and all.. (made redundant as of today)

my toledo is still rockin along nicely.

except for a coupla tiny fings.
1.a very intermittent fault with starting the engine.. only fires 3 cylinders..but after 30seconds its all good.
2.the handbrake isnt working again(newy crew? i think i need new cables?)
3.i think i have a leak in the coolant. every few months the light flashes until i top it up.. altho i drove it to sydney and back and around newy for a month with it flashing and it never went past halfway on the temp guage..

hows everyone else doin? whens the next cruise!

ps: is the handbrake tested for a pink slip? rego is due on 1st march :/

hate to worry you but !!
not running on all cylinders on start up and a coolant loss
is a sign of a blown head gasket
when the car is up to temp and parked for night
coolant can leak into a cylinder
then when you start it in morning it will run rough until it clears the coolant
i'd get it checked out
sorry

Or it could be a dodgy ht lead and a crack in the water outlet housing.

my Polo has the same problem with the coolant, after a couple of months the light will flash at me telling me to top it up.

also if i leave my car for a couple of weeks itll run on 3 cylinders and then fire back onto 4 after a few seconds.

Hate to say.. but the handbrake is a roadworthy item, unless of course you get someone who isnt that thorough in doing a pink slip inspection.

thanks for the info guys.

im only going off what people have said in looking at it.. ayden loosened both the cables at the back of the wheels then pulled then down and tightened which seemed to have resolved the problem.. but its now happeneing again.. would that mean i need new cables cause they are seizing??

or would it be worht just taking it to somewhere that does both handbrakes and pinkslips?

Get it serviced mate. Bring it past the workshop if you fancy a mission to Sydney. We`d look after the old girl for you and fix what needs fixing.

pps; one of my mates bought a cordoba a few weeks ago.. he said he was gonna invest in one of those chips from england. if it works well, i'll do the same for mine.

Chip will do more on your 2L than on his 1.8 singlepoint

took the car in for a pinkslip down here. asked to check out the handbrake cables at the back.

just got a call..
the bloke said the cables have both been crushed by something and will both need replacing.
said the camber/copper(dunno what he said) gasket is busted - which explains the oil and white discharge..
and the muffler has been "backyard mechaniced" and is rooted..

loon- prices? :D - the guy said he'd order them all in from sydney..

Handbrake cables
capper something gasket??
muffler

SO MUCH FOR AN EASY PINKSLIP!?

tapper cover gasket? im guessing its the top cover of the engine.. probably whats causing that birdpoo(white and black) looking stuff to leak out the top.

can only source 1 handbrake cable too. said the other would have to be ordered from spain :/

If its creamy and mixed with the oil, its the headgasket. If its just black oil, it the rocker cover gasket.

Sorry Rednut. I only have one cable that has been crushed!

I`d take it to another rego station and hope they dont check the handbrake.

back in action!! man, what a poo of a fortnight!

anyways, all goods have come from it (except for the bill but it was alot less than I thought)

New muffler has made the car go better, feels like more compression when accelerating. (still needs a bit more work apparently) $220 (was taken to some exhaust specialist)

Head gasket has been cleaned up and reseated (could only be a temp fix, will keep an eye on it)

New handbrake cable installed $86
second new handbrake cable coming from Spain within 3 weeks $86

The mechanic was quiet good I thought, rang me alot to advise of a problem but wouldnt do anything unless i ok'd it.

Including labour and pink slip plus the installation of the new cable once it arrives it cost about $680 which was half of what i was expecting.
