Hi all,
Jumping over from the mk2 golf section, I've just recently purchased my dad's T4 off him that he's owned from new as he has just gone and upgraded to the T6.1, I think he still prefers the T4! It's still straight and tidy and has a great service history with only 122000 k's. Its the 2.5L petrol SWB model, 2002 I think.
I'll post whatever I get upto on it. My long term goal is to still be able to use it for transporting stuff around, like if I ever wanna get big sheets of something or pickup an engine, but also convert it to a camper. I'm from Tassie so there is lots of overnight trips to do only within a couple of hours. So the camper will only be set up for 1-2 night trips. The bed and whatever else will need to be somewhat removable or pack away quite nicely. So many ideas but hey, no deadlines at least!
First little change was putting in some new headlight bulbs. Osram Night Breaker Laser next gen so on so on. Lots better compared to the stock standard halogens. Took about 5 minutes to swap, no issues.
Just sold a set of wheels so I've got some money to put into a head unit. Want a reverse camera and some sort of navigation with it too and further potential for a good sound system for the back of the van. Will see what I come up with, all the fold-out single din stuff is currently sold out everywhere so I'll have to retro fit a double din screen in somehow...
Cheers,
Thomashttps://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/04/b6e8b91d458508a7680a4af8ef3771c8-1.jpghttps://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/04/4347fc57dd65dda76c2c53f9f791476c-1.jpghttps://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/04/d72eb049e5e1a61b08f2b24cd77d4723-1.jpg

Here you go feast your eyes on my son,s T4 from a few years back , I did the whole conversion including two 12 inch subs amps etc and fold out 7 inch screen in the dash and a huge 15 inch fold down DVD player / screen in the rear compartment . https://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/f136/one-down-one-go-107854.html?highlight=Transporter+T4 I even did a complete drive train swap as his engine was originally a non turboed diesel . We got another van off ebay with the 2.5 petrol and swapped the whole box and dice over .

So after much thought, decided to steer away from a new double din head unit or anything with a screen cause I didn't want to do any chopping around in my dash. I solved my reverse camera problem and got myself a Parkmate reverse mirror. Is touchscreen and has front and rear cameras which record. The screen is voice controlled too and works really well.
Took a fair while running the wiring through the pillars, then through the roof and down into the boot. There were a few tough spots of trying to thread wires through but nothing major.
Where I mounted the rear camera seemed like the best spot and if I ever need to see the towball, I can tilt the camera down easily. There wasn't really an ideal way to mount the camera low enough and still be able to see directly backwards, so just ran with it this way. Only drilled one hole which fed the wire through, all sikaflexed up to seal the hole, with a touch of paint on any fresh metal.
The screen seems great so far, it just straps around the original mirror. My only concern is when you try to look at the mirror with the screen on, it can be really glary but if you press the little tab on the original mirror that you press when someone blasts their high beams into you, this solves the problem.
I'll still be looking into a single din, but nothing with a touch screen display or anything. Just something that can power a sweet as sound system.
Cheers,
Thomashttps://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/04/79a708c845e30241087a762dcb15a0bc-1.jpghttps://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/04/85bb1ee25af23a222793ea30fee79161-1.jpghttps://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/04/12ae2f1ce7dd0476be1422e97f7c1d2d-1.jpghttps://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/04/45a8ff03b7d7342d8a530c93b440a0fa-1.jpg

A single DIN fold out head unit will do the job and its Android with GPS Bluetooth facility for front and rear cameras and a lot of other stuff as well . Long time no post, did something today haven't seen any other T4's do. Installed a Narva Explora 22" single row light bar in the lower grill. Had the whole bumper and grill off, put nutserts into the top of the crash bar and mounted that way, keeping everything clean and the mounting points invisible (I want an OEM look, no number plate brackets or anything). Only modification was to the plastic grill which I cut with a little coping saw then gave the plastic edges a light sand.
I wanted to go bigger and fill the whole grill but didn't want flow issues, perhaps I would've had some, perhaps not. I'll never know lol. This looks nice and tidy for my liking. I hope to inspire some people cause I haven't seen any pictures on the web of this mounting style!

Yes loved my T4 2.5 petrol engined one right up until I hit the back of a car transporter trailer , crushed the drivers side guard headlight and the door skin right back to the door lock along with the whole front wheel and axle . Even buckled the roof as well , I nearly cried as I put so much stuff into that van it took me half a day just to remove the stereo as when the insurance wrote it off I dove in and took out everything that wasn,t bolted down ! The fire brigade turned up as it spilt its guts out onto the road by the axle being torn out of the gearbox , they had to mop up the oil for safety reasons . PS I walked away without a scratch as the trailer frame didn,t get past the inner door strengthener missed me by about 100mm .

As far as I know the old van got sold at Auction as a repairable right off , would be nice to know it survived as it was only 5 years old at the time . From memory it was bought by someone from down south as they rang me from the business number on the van at the time to find out its mechanical history .It would be fairly easy to identify as it would at the time be the only T4 with a fully built in sliding sunroof as I was fitting them back then .

Few replacements today, had a snapped aerial and put on clear lights, makes it look a bit less of a work van.https://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/05/ff0962df9f1ceb54d6c4e72ca175115f-1.jpghttps://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/05/b9e2c5803604482ee7fa5168aa26c4ac-1.jpghttps://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/05/4b8d216323ff81f32fe321c8c4f9c867-1.jpg

I haven't got anything interesting to say except I think your van looks very tidy & from what you have said I think it will remain that way.
I have a stock standard Syncro Trakka but with the TDI engine. The only mod I have done is to replace the original interior light with one from a Seat something or other [probably a Cordoba] that has a separate switch & light for the navigator. I had a friend change the time delay with a different resistor & change it to LED. It fitted perfectly & only cost a few dollars from U Pull it.
My van is a '01 & has done around 134,000km.I will probably keep it until they take my license away.
I just thought of something to keep a look out for. They tend to form rust in the lower windscreen area. Mine had a very small spot when I bought it in '08. I put a very small amount of fisholine on the spot when it was completely dry. I check it every now & then & even though it hasn't grown at all I have put a second coat on it.
Enjoy your van.

Ply wood floor installed, had to shape it around my rear seat. Have got some insulation ordered to go underneath then can put my carpet back over the top and fix it down. Rear seats are easily removable and also fold over forwards so are extremely handy for putting a bed frame and drawers around. Everything from here on will bolt into the ply wood, want to avoid drilling into the van sheet metal. https://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/06/2f33825d3e6753648fb0b21540f02fc3-1.jpg

I know I said in the lower windscreen area, but specifically just under the lower edge of the windscreen rubber. VW, to their credit
anticipated this could be a potential for rust to form & have 3 small drain points in the panel. Mine formed away from one of those.
Over the years, I have seen many T4s with rust forming in this area.

Been spending a fair bit of time over the last week to get this bed frame in. Basically a list of things it needed to be able to do:
- Slide/extend out to clear the folded down rear seats which were 550mm high.
- Be lightweight but still strong enough for my wife and I.
- Easily removeable.
- Allow for draws and other items to be installed underneath.
- Pack away tightly.
Made it all out of aluminium and used little plastic connectors for joins to save welding. There are two bases and these slide into each other with 1000mm heavy duty drawer slides. The wooden slats also slide in between each other to help it pack up nicely. I installed two side rails on foldable brackets that will stay permanently installed on the van, but look nice and tidy and still stay out of the way. These basically make it a floating bed. 4 legs were installed too, two at the front, one in the middle and one at the back, which still gives good room for big items to still fit underneath.
I've tried to attach the pictures in the installation order! Honestly I am really happy with this. It was a little expensive using all the aluminium and other things such as the folding brackets (8 in total) and the heavy duty drawer slides, but it had to be done. Just want to give the alumnium a good polish now!
Cheers,
Thomashttps://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/06/3c3eaad97f21082c5f40aa31c20652de-1.jpghttps://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/06/3b37758560ec31d9b8dd1533b3c3de61-1.jpghttps://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/06/0abcbe045fe2c0d1d6e3856dc7ae61a0-1.jpghttps://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/06/54b708110f4cb5834ed61e68ae5799f4-1.jpghttps://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/06/6624636b20920dc96e0f2eecf8422663-1.jpghttps://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/06/d7ff4952690ee7fd91e2b8e9bc25adab-1.jpghttps://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/06/39d6f46080065c6f09d2d4ff088310c3-1.jpghttps://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/06/cf68262389d40aa8713bdcf2a82dc09e-1.jpghttps://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/06/d0ce9a898370e5992d062e080e82936a-1.jpg

I also recovered all the interior boards with Car Builder's dark grey carpet.
Something else too has been fitting electric windows using all the items from a Caravelle. The loom plugs into the fusebox and runs to both windows, where I swapped the manual regulator the electric regulator. Then just used a little dremel to cut tidy holes in the door cards for the factory switches. So much better than the horrid manual windows! Didn't take any pics of the install process. https://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/06/20fb9b0532e5844882f910a8a660412d-1.jpghttps://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/06/e3d9bb0a31126baf766b849cb94c6eab-1.jpg

Been working hard for the last month, finally deadened, insulated, carpeted out the van and ran all the electrics, re-adjusted the bed frame to fit and now its all together! Looking forward to going on a trip over the coming weeks as the weather gets better.
Installed some touch sensitive lights, installed numerous lights wired to the switch panel, usb plugs both side, 3 cigarette sockets and then the dual battery system with a smart isolator (DCDC too expensive on my budget). All panels have been bolted in using rivnuts, allowing for me to take them off in the future for other changes. Still got some more things in the future like a solar panel and battery monitor but they can wait. Very excited, it finally has come together.
Cheers,
Thomas

Not too bad , from a motor trimmer you have done well for a handyman . I might not have agreed with the fasteners used but as you said in case you make changes to the interior it was the best way , for that side step you could check out the hardware shops for an alloy strip with a lip to overlap the top surface of the carpet and screw it to the ply . There are also some alloy cover strips that could be used to cover the join in the roof , just make sure you mark where there is suitable places for the screws to go into and be very careful when drilling so you dont go through the roof itself I used to use a piece of hard plastic tube over the drill bit to prevent going too far in. Did you get some clues from my sons one I posted a few posts ago ?

Na it was all my own thinking. That strip for the roof I'm waiting new plastic clips to put the original piece back in and yea I might look into an alloy piece to cover the step. Otherwise a nice plastic step ordered from the UK would be good, once I am happy to pay the horrid shipping fees...

Not sure if the original plastic step would fit now that you have made the floor somewhat thicker than standard .

I was indicating the raised aftermarket ones they make to suit vans with floors installed. Found a loose piece of alloy floating around so might go for that method instead.

To top it all off, got some toys to finish off really all I want for the T4. 120Ah AGM deep cycle battery, fits absolutely spot on in the battery box. An Opposite Lock 150W solar panel, that just alligator clips straight onto the 2nd battery, then finally a 45L Dometic single zone fridge! We couldn't decide for whether to go for a single or dual zone fridge/freezer but considering we only go away 2 to 3 nights tops, the extra money for the dual zone just wasn't worth it. Time for some cool drinks I'd say

I have been looking for a cheap way to install a roof basket and ended up making my own mounts. I bought 2nd hand roof basket and bought mounts/tracks just from hardware store, using T extrusions and heavy duty right angle brackets. Lots of rivets and a few rivnuts and its worked a charm.
Also leaves just enough room for a solar panel to go in front! https://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/12/9325dd5bd8e725eaa1d74ba961c15b11-1.jpghttps://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/12/274c588163ab8faaa3f848b6dd820e98-1.jpghttps://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/12/3929e745810c3bef1141928eca736c98-1.jpghttps://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/12/71d8c80ba36af6aac56bf6523b5812e1-1.jpg

Few new additions! We have been away a few times now since my last post and have gotten really sick of lifting the fridge out, the camp box and also getting the solar panel out when needed.
First thing was splitting my fold out solar panel in two, with one half now permanently mounted on the roof, and the other still with a 5 metre long cable and can be moved around, just in case we are parked in the shade.
Next was fridge slide, and some drawers. I used the sheet metal from the window to make a table top. The top drawer has a fridge slide on it that is now a table and also a little chopping board. The lower drawer is just normal. Works a charm now and makes storage so much easier, very happy with the outcome. https://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2022/03/facc7c6b2ddc05666a52e1ee98e3ea9b-1.jpghttps://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2022/03/10ff54281041fdf54c3dd765ba07239e-1.jpghttps://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2022/03/4470f5aa2aedd3ac268d6d66375167af-1.jpg

Yes it caught my eye in the shed and thought it was a great re-purpose. I actually really rate the XTM stuff so far, I think they are great quality, both the fridge slide and drawers. For a bit more money, definitely a quick and simple process.

Hey Weeman, nice van mate, one of the best looking t4's Ive seen.
What size rivnuts did you use for your internal panels? Did you use the factory holes on the inner skin? I'm currently fitting out my T6 and it has 8mm factory holes which are nicely primd with paint, but they are an inbetween size the for the M5 (7mm hole) or M6 (9mm hole) rivnuts...

I used M6's (9mm). And yes I used the 8mm hole, drilled out to 9mm and then just used a cotton tip to apply some paint on the bare metal, then rivnut. I went down this path because I've been working on a budget so was never going to be able to fitout my van in one go, and can now remove the panels. I find the plastic plugs hopeless and basically one time use.. thats why I went for the rivnuts. If you want to go M5's maybe try putting one through an 8mm hole on a spare sheet of metal and see if it grabs well? I've done this on other projects and had good success with it.

Ahh ok, I reckon I'll drill out to 9mm and re-prime as you've done, seems like the best method. Cheers for the advice

I've been fiddling around with my water system for the van and finally got it finished. I was gifted the KickAss hot water unit from a mate as he struggled to fit it anywhere in his Amarok, I also struggled! With a lot of thinking and ideas thrown around, I finally fixed it to in front of the fridge by strapping it to the handle and rivnutting and fixing some 'feet' to the bottom of it. Works a charm!
Starting from the water source, I bought two 25 litre cubes that I then plumbed together with a few random bits and bobs from Bunnings. These sit nicely in behind my backseat. This gives me 50 litres total which I'm certainly happy with. Buying water tanks to mount under body was just too tricky to get to work and cost too much for my liking.
One of the cubes has a filter attached to the inlet pipe and this feeds around to the water pump (6 litre/min) which I fixed onto the wheel arch. This then feeds to the hot water unit.
I modded a brass tap to fit to the hot water units outlet so I can leave the waterpump turned on and turn the tap on to get cold/hot water. This also means I can add a quick connection to my shower hose for easy attachment. Works a charm, very happy with how it worked out!https://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2022/06/14f1dfd1390f90700f6862cc7db8093d-1.jpghttps://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2022/06/b1b5e7a8b5c9b680a7fdaba25a28ce1d-1.jpghttps://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2022/06/40efad6a2394669b7b25e935cdf8d9f8-1.jpghttps://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2022/06/2183b16c7bafd9cbd1488bb1b245bb9c-1.jpghttps://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2022/06/56e98c7b3e26639be5016cb340ade5e4-1.jpghttps://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2022/06/e78ec5395ca002c9d059f7b184c6ec90-1.jpg

Installed a Darche Eclipse G2 270 awning today. Heard great feedback about them from some mates so pulled the trigger on one thanks to the recent tax return! I'll need to make some additional brackets for it as it sits a bit too low that the tailgate doesn't go high enough. Went for a trip away last weekend and it drizzled most of the time so looking forward to a bit of shelter next time! https://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2022/07/8dfe1449a7a8da81553f1601abce600f-1.jpghttps://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2022/07/6b07768cdbe38c21bcdf63219a005512-1.jpg

Switched my front seats around as the drivers one has started showing lots of wear and tear in one of the bolsters. It wasn't an overly simple job as I could only get about a quarter turn with an allen key on the front bolts so that was a bit annoying. The drivers seatbelt buckle had a sensor in it that needed to be swapped over as well between the seats. About an hours job in the end.https://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2022/08/ff5d2277bcf16fbfaa47786852534692-1.jpg

Welcome to my world , I was a motor trimmer for 50 years plus and seats were my life ! Now I could have offered this bit of advice the whole seat cushion assembly just unclips from the base frame . You could have just swapped over the base cover and its cushion more easily that way .

Swivel seat base installed to passenger seat, giving a bit more space to the inside now! I can see why they come with a big price tag, they are a solid piece of kit.https://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2022/09/2a640e7cb99d963d31da9fd0a220410a-1.jpghttps://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2022/09/09b9095adaec3bb0b7bba3126d97141f-1.jpghttps://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2022/09/8cfcd868ddcfdc73090ee6a1c27f5c34-1.jpg

New clutch installed today. The old pressure plate had a really bad hotspot in it from when my dad owned it and got stuck trying to pull his boat out with it oops. Its a heavy duty one, pedal is a fair bit firmer now to push in!

Added some work lights around the van, make for some great lighting at camp. These are all wired to a key fob so I can switch them on and off remotely! Inspired by a mate who did it on his Triton, awesome little gadget.https://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2023/01/11e0c31367b6c7d410f25c57a423d11f-1.jpghttps://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2023/01/06c8481bad37d129635ec25a160f37bf-1.jpg

Right, haven't updated this one for a while, been very busy on the golf. But I definitely wanted to add an update because I just changed the clutch and it was the worst experience of my life, took me about 30 hours of struggles. So here is some brief helpful tips:
- There is a stupid shcs when unbolting the gearbox that bolts in from the other direction (east to west). It is the only bolt that bolts to the gearbox from the other way and it is an absolute nightmare to find. It is at the top of the back of the gearbox... goodluck.
- Absolutely need a scissor jack between the sump and the subframe to push the engine as far forward as possible. Some people even go as far as taking the alternator off, but I got it done with the alternator pressed hard up against the radiator.
- Pulling the gearbox in and out requires ALOT of maneouvring. I suggest an engine crane to help (as it keeps it floating, rather than trolley jacks), then just lay underneath it and lift/move it around as necessary.
That's my tips. Never raged harder in my life hahaha. Goodluck to anyone wanting to do it!
Other than that, van looking same old stock standard. Thinking about sending me steelies to the mainland and getting them banded... Here's also a pic of my golf.https://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2023/12/71a64ecaa37227318efe0ea34c215989-1.jpghttps://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2023/12/b8ae8d09cd411a905dc532ac154fcd20-1.jpg

Looking good , I miss my old T4 . It was areal goer right up until I drove into the back of a car carrying trailer , I saw what I thought was a car stopped behind the cab of the truck itself when stopped at lights . Bad part was it was a low level long trailer with the car right up against the cab and right at that moment my focus was on a car broken down on the side of the road and then whump ! straight into the rear corner of the trailer. It was one of those ones with a knife style loading ramp and they dont have any protection from a car hitting from behind , when I looked out the drivers window my front wheel was under the door , the trailer cut right through beside the headlight and tore the outer door skin right back to the door pillar . End of T4 . My son had a T4 later which was the slow 2.4 non turboed diesel model , I bought a 2.5 petrol one off Ebay for $3500 . Picked it up from Coffs Harbour and drove it back to home in Brissie , a week later I had done a complete transplant so he could have the better powered petrol engine . So engine gearbox exhaust fuel system engine wiring body control module and instrument cluster all swapped over . I got very good at removing the engine gearbox all at once as I removed the whole front grill etc with a engine lift I hired . After finishing his I refitted all the diesel stuff into the ebay van tidied it up fixed some trim and some small paint work and listed it back on Ebay and got $4500 for it . Yes I can sympathise about gearbox removal as I had to replace the clutch in my T5 , that was a mongrel job lying on my back with the van up on stands and maneuvering the box out resting on my gut !!

Since gutting the sleeping gear out of the back of the van, I've added a roof top tent. James Baroud EVO. Absolutely amazing quality and suits the T4 perfectly.https://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2024/04/467648008a3f62c0a501f3b3b7fa38d8-1.jpghttps://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2024/04/2a98c28e54aa9560b29eb65108179eeb-1.jpg
