Hey Guys,

Most of you guys look at the bottom of who's online and our latest member. Its easy to see a name that looks really suspicious as most spammers use crazy names and names spelt wierd....

If you suspect its a spammer or you see a spam thread, POST THE LINK HERE!!!

How do you recognise a spammer is it the content of their post??

Effectively, yes.
Recently there have been a lots of things like "Nice vid. Thanks for the share". They have a Nick which is often random. They then mostly have a link in their signature which goes to come questionable site, or via a link parser site (such as tiny.url). And then the other dead give away is, they'll have 8 posts in 20 minutes in 8 different threads which are all identical.

Is there any better way of vetting people before they become members?? In the last 3 to 4 weeks there has been a lalrge increase in the amount of spammers coming onto this forum compared to the last 12 months.

I agree. I know it's a bit of a whine but these posts annoy me no end. However, I have no ideas on how to ensure members are well vetted though undoubtedly somebody will. Sorry to take this thread off track.

We are using an image verification, but we're not using CAPTCHA. Maybe we need to try out CAPTCHA for a while :)

Lots of spam coming in lately... Can anything be done to prevent it??

Actually, the amount of spam seems to have dropped off significantly in the past week, because The_Hawk changed the image verification to reCAPTCHA. Many of the automated bot spammers have gone. That one had updated location and everything, so it looked as though it was more of a person.

Anyway... at this point there isn't much you can do to completely stop spammers. You get to a certain point where it becomes too difficult or restrictive for legitimate new users to join. That or you have an admin manually verify each new user, which means lots of work anyway...

No no, I agree. I was just putting them up to keep an eye on as it's sus'. Bad grammar, outside of Australia and mismatched flag (is that the SA flag? I didn't think so, maybe wrong.) seem to be the spammer trend.
