Those new rims look exceptional with the dark blue paint. I am still partial to the turbine Rosario rims against white.

Glad to see the shooting brake made it past the concept stage, it will hopefully keep the Arteon name alive for awhile.

Not too surprising they didn't realise a 6 cylinder version at the price point. The eHybrid option is an interesting addition, but not a performance option either.

Now to see if VW Australia actually orders any of the new models...

Just watched the Carwow vid of the Arteon R. Things are looking up for the Arteon it seems. Hope they have done something to fix the heavy understeer.

Very, very nice. VW need to bring both the fastback and shooting brake to Australia, price it right this time and they'll be on a winner.

I actually really like that blue in the GT/sedan version. I somewhat agree with doc_777, the shooting brake isn't my cup of tea. Maybe it'll look better in person so I'm keeping an open mind about it. But with only 2L more luggage capacity than the GT version (like mentioned in one of those review videos), what's the point?

I've only got 18 months left with my Arteon before I throw the keys back at VW, and I'm starting to look at my next options now. I've been tempted by Tesla and their Model 3 Long Range, but I've been keeping an eye on the Tesla Motor Club forums - and.... a lot of what gets said by Tesla owners is what's putting me off owning a Model 3 (and I can't afford a Model S/X).

So with that in mind - another Arteon is definitely on the list. I've really enjoyed the one I have, and it's a great car. If I had to do another 4yrs with one, I wouldn't mind.

So anyone going to have a stab at the price of a R Wagon if it comes to Australia. I currently have a Wolfsburg wagon and starting to look around for my next car.

That’s a hefty pricetag.

Also keep hearing the new Golf R will be getting about 335hp while this is 320. Same engine detuned?

So anyone going to have a stab at the price of a R Wagon if it comes to Australia. I currently have a Wolfsburg wagon and starting to look around for my next car.

For reference I seem to remember the original Passat R36 (Last full size R wagon) and the Arteon 206TSI R-Line both ran about low 70's driveaway, I think it is reasonable that this new one being an Arteon AND an R would be more like 80, maybe 85 optioned driveaway.

I'm in the same boat as you, I currently have the R36 and haven't seen anything I like to replace it. I was going to compromise and go for a Mk. 8 Golf R hatchback, but this new Arteon R is pretty much the first serious successor to the R36 that VW have done, so I'm obviously super keen. About the only nitpick I have is the new seats look tacky. I prefer the R36 seats by far, although they an absolute pain in the ass to keep in good condition for a daily. But everything else about it impresses me.

It's definitely confirmed to be the same engine (evo4) for both as well as the same new torque vectoring AWD. You are right though, this thing is confirmed to have 235kW (315hp) while the new Golf R was rumoured to have 245kW (328hp) based on an internal slide pack leak. It seems strange to detune the power in the higher end car, possibly the Golf R when it comes out will be revised down to 235 as well for whatever reason.

With the Tiguan R announced as well, VW have kinda returned to the old R32/R36/R50 era, albeit with that bizarre T-Roc thing as well. The T-Roc doesn't come to Australia, but I really hope this Arteon does, and the Tiguan would be cool to see too.

Something that I haven't seen mentioned yet, the new Tiguan R is confirmed to have an optional Akrapovic catback exhaust system, same as the Final Edition Golf R Mk. 7.5 did. I am hoping that also flows down to the other R models, because that would be quite a good option to add. As much as I like the (AMG rip off) square tips on the Arteon R, it probably won't sound as good as a third party system, VW exhausts are always too conservative for me.

Agree with the R36 bolster seats. I owned an R36 sedan before the Arteon and absolutely loved the seats. They hug and secure you in position when going around the corners. I also prefer alcantara seats over leather. Really sad that I hadnto let it go. But after 170k on the clock, it’s a bit scary to keep a euro vehicle.

For me the alcantara is an awesome material and they look stunning, but for a daily driver on the driver's seat it is a lot of work to maintain and the side bolsters have a very common issue where the foam on the door side crumbles away, which feels and looks average. I am actually currently ordering new seat bases for mine to fix this, it is $220 per base from overseas and I don't have a labour quote yet but if it is more than a couple hours for both I will try and DIY it.

The Arteon R's seats look to be far more low maintenance, but I dislike the ridiculous fake carbon effect leather and am indifferent about the blue panels. I wish they had just done an all black Nappa or mix Nappa/alcantara, with the blue logo and stitches.

It could be worse though, the cloth pattern on the Tiguan R is a bit... not great. I do like the STi style harness hole though, strange the Arteon and Golf R don't have that.

Nice! Yeah I got a quote for the seat padding from VW Solitaire and they wanted $311 for the part, curious your total was $700 as I can't see it being more than a couple hours for a workshop to do the job? What was the itemised quote? The annoying part looks like you need to replace all the hog clips so you would need those and a tool to do it, but otherwise it's four bolts and some plugs to get the seat out. My independent service place declined to do it and recommended a trim place nearby, but I think I will just DIY the passenger seat out of the car and if the job was easy enough, repeat on the driver's seat on a weekend when I don't need to drive the car.

If you are curious about how much it costs for the dealer to replace the alcantara/leather by the way, it is an absolutely absurd $3400 for the seat base fabric and $3344 for the seat back fabric, so $6700 excluding labour per seat. Those do include new seat heater elements (I assume no seperate part number so you're ****ed if your seat heater ever fails) but those are just glorified electric blankets so I don't think that makes up for it. I don't understand how they can justify that, but there you go.

Its because is Aus is designated a hot climate region. VW and Audi always seem to detune their cars here :(

Audi successfully negotiated with the factory for Aus to have designation changed from hot climate to.....I dunno, not hot. Hopefully VW Aus can do the same.

The Arteon R isn't announced for Australia yet, the 235kW figure is from Europe. The 245kW Golf R figure was only from a leaked internal slide so I would lean more towards the Golf R being revised down to 235kW as well than the bigger Arteon having less power. But it's all guess work at this stage.

They wouldn’t do a v6 turbo as that would put the Arteon in S4 segment. VW won’t wanna kill the sales of one of their own brands.

That Golf 8 is growing on me a little in R trim. It's not a stunner like the Arteon but it's not bad.

Have seen leaks now of the Golf R Mk.8 with the optional Akrapovic on it, and the Tiguan R has it confirmed. Seems like an optional Akra will be across the R range maybe so a good likelihood the Arteon R will get one as well. Just need it confirmed for Oz...
